LBJs official announcement of the "A-11". Although the world would not know about the A-12 until 1982, Johnson simply read "AMI" (Advanced Manned Interceptor) incorrectly, and ended up at "A-11"!! Ironic that there was a real bird that was just one number away from the "Typo". The A-12s were of course mainly flown by the CIA during the 1960s & '70s. In reality, the "A-11" was the YF-12A. Another interesting note; LBJ mentions that "Several A-11s" (There were three YF-12A Interceptors built) are "Now being tested at Edwards AFB". Not so when this aired on March 2, 1964! They were being tested at Area 51, and immedialtely following that announcement, two of the YF-12As were hurriedly flown to Edwards to "Make it look good". :-) The two still pictures in this video are the ones that have been in our brains since 1964; the tarmac shot here is indeed Area 51, and nobody ever questioned when the photos were credited as to being taken at Edwards! Of course, the hills in the background are all wrong for Muroc, CA anyway.
