Ireland is to make a clean break from its three-year 85bn euro (£71bn) bailout programme next month, without seeking precautionary funding.

The Irish prime minister (taoiseach) Enda Kenny confirmed the move during a speech to the Irish parliament.

The Irish economy is emerging from one of the deepest recessions in the eurozone, having sought an international bailout in November 2010.

Ireland is due to leave the EU-IMF bailout on 15 December.

The first ever trial of an ex-president of the Federal Republic of Germany has begun in the northern city of Hanover where Christian Wulff is accused of accepting financial favours in office.

Once tipped as a successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel, he quit the largely ceremonial president\'s role in disgrace in February last year.

He is charged over a visit to the Munich Oktoberfest beer festival in 2008, when prosecutors claim his hotel bill was paid by film producer David Groenewold, who is also on trial.

More serious charges were dropped.

Three years ago, Sotheby\'s set a record when it sold the Graff Pink diamond for $46.2m, which was half the size of the Pink Star.

A crucial vote to resolve the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and Ukraine\'s relations with the EU has been postponed in the country\'s parliament.

Opposition MPs showed their anger at the delay by leaving their seats. They had hoped to vote on a bill to allow the detained opposition leader to go to Germany for medical treatment for her back.

Tymoshenko is serving seven years for abuse of office after a trial the EU says was political. Jailed in 2011, she has since been transferred to a hospital unit. Her custody is an obstacle to an association deal due to be signed between the bloc and Ukraine later this month.

But, reading a message from her mother, Evgeniya Tymoshenko said in Kiev: \

At Least 460.000 Sudanese Displaced In Sudan

  • Updated: 14 Nov 2013
At least 460,000 people in Sudan's Darfur region have been displaced this year as a result of tribal violence and rebel-government battles, the United Nation says. Citing humanitarian organisations, the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Thursday said that "so far in 2013 at least 460,000 people have fled their homes in Darfur as a result of inter-tribal fighting and clashes between the SAF (Sudanese army) and armed movements". "This is more than the number of people internally displaced in Darfur in 2011 and 2012 combined," the UN said. The latest figure marks a jump from the 300,000 who UN humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos announced in May had been displaced during the first five months of the year. Tribal violence has eclipsed rebel activity as Darfur's major security threat, Defence Minister Abdelrahim Mohammed Hussein said in a briefing to parliament on Tuesday. Darfur has been unstable since 2003 when armed groups complaining about marginalisation by the Sudanese government started a rebellion, which sucked in government-backed militias known as the Janjaweed, which were blamed for widespread killings that have been labelled as genocide. President Omar el-Bashir was in 2009 indicted by the International Criminal Court for genocide and war crimes in Darfur, which issued a warrant for his arrest but he remains at large, and has since visited several African countries. The UN estimates as many as 300,000 people have been killed in the Darfur genocide but the Sudanese government says the death toll has been grossly inflated.

Ireland Breaks Out Of Bailout Programme
Ireland Breaks Out Of Bailout Programme
  • Order:
  • Duration: 3:42
  • Updated: 14 Nov 2013
Ireland is to make a clean break from its three-year 85bn euro (£71bn) bailout programme next month, without seeking precautionary funding. The Irish prime minister (taoiseach) Enda Kenny confirmed the move during a speech to the Irish parliament. The Irish economy is emerging from one of the deepest recessions in the eurozone, having sought an international bailout in November 2010. Ireland is due to leave the EU-IMF bailout on 15 December. Mr Kenny said: "We will exit the bailout in a strong position. The government has been preparing for a return to normal market trading. "We will set out a path to a brighter economic future for our people, a path from mass unemployment to full employment, from involuntary emigration to the return of thousands of people who have to leave for other countries to find work. "Today is just the latest step in that ongoing journey, a significant step indeed but also just another step towards our ultimate job of getting Ireland working again." He added that German chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to work closely with Ireland to improve funding mechanisms for the economy, including access to finance for small and medium businesses. "The German government has asked KFW, the German development bank, to work with the German and Irish authorities swiftly, in order to deliver on this initiative at the earliest possible date," Mr Kenny said. Strategic outline International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde said the performance of Ireland bodes well for the future. "The Irish authorities have established a very strong track record of policy implementation. This bodes well as Ireland exits its EU/IMF-supported programme," she said. "Although uncertainties remain in Europe and the global economy more broadly, Ireland is in a strong position in terms of its bond yields and has built a sizable cash buffer. We look forward to continuing to work with the authorities as they address the challenges that remain." It is understood a decision not to seek a special overdraft facility was finalised at an emergency cabinet meeting on Thursday, ahead of Finance Minister Michael Noonan flying out to a summit in Brussels. Mr Noonan said the decision was in Ireland's best interests, and that he hoped to publish the main outlines of a medium-term economic strategy before 25 December. The Department of Finance said confidence and sentiment towards Ireland has improved considerably in recent months and domestic and international economic conditions were also improving. Deputy prime minister Eamon Gilmore told the parliament it was an "historic, important and welcome" announcement. However, the Labour leader added: "There will be no celebration until our economic fortunes are fully recovered." Mr Gilmore said the renegotiation of bailout interest rates and the Anglo bank promissory note were among the reasons Ireland can cleanly exit the bailout. Micheál Martin, leader of the opposition Fianna Fáil party, said a case should be presented by the government on why Ireland does not need a precautionary credit line. He said there was no need for a "stage-managed" announcement. Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams welcomed the move but said the government should not applaud itself for decimating public services and leaving families across the state in poverty. Independent member Stephen Donnelly described it as a "bittersweet moment" for Ireland and said there was a need for retrospective capitalisation. Another independent member, Shane Ross, said the bond markets would require as much austerity as the Irish government had been "imposing at the whim of the troika (the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund who provided the bailout)".

But, reading a message from her mother, Evgeniya Tymoshenko said in Kiev: "I'm appealing to all leaders of the European Union, to all Ukrainian citizens, Ukrainian civil society, the opposition, not to waste time but to act and strive for the signing of the agreement under any circumstances."
