The EOS-1Ds is a full-frame 11.4 megapixel digital SLR camera body formerly made by Canon, released in the spring^[when?] of 2003. Its dimensions are 156 mm in width, 157.6 mm in height, and 79.9 mm in depth. Its mass (without a battery) is 1,265 g.

Functions[link]

Being an autofocus camera, it has two autofocus modes, and an option for manual focusing. Its viewfinder is a glass pentaprism. It also has a two-inch, thin-film transistor, color liquid-crystal monitor with approximately 120,000 pixels.

The camera's image sensor is a CMOS-based integrated circuit with Bayer filters for RGB color detection (Canon calls it single-plate, in contrast with three-CCD sensors). It has approximately 11.4 million effective pixels. A non-removable optical anti-aliasing filter is located in front of the image sensor.

The shutter is an electronically controlled focal-plane shutter. Its maximum speed is 1/8,000 of one second. Soft-touch shutter release occurs via an electromagnetic signal.

Mark II[link]

The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II superseded the EOS-1Ds as the top model in the Canon EOS line. It has a full-frame 16.7 megapixel CMOS sensor.

Its dimensions are identical to its predecessor. Its weight (without a battery) is 1,215 g (2 lb 10.9 oz).

Upgraded functions[link]

The Mark II has an increased number of autofocus modes, and retains an option for manual focusing. Its viewfinder is a "fixed pentaprism". The two-inch, TFT, color LCD has been upgraded to approximately 230,000 pixels.

The camera's image sensor is a single-plate CMOS-based integrated circuit. It has a higher density of photosites – approximately 17.2 million total (16.6 million effective pixels in the final output). It has a RGB primary color filter and non-removable low-pass filter, like its predecessor.

Mark III[link]

Released in December 2007, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is the third in the Canon 1Ds full-frame line. When it was released, it held the title of the highest resolution full frame (35mm) dSLR, with a 21 megapixel CMOS sensor. More recent camera models from various manufacturers now exceed this.

Compared to the Mark II, The Mark III adds several new features, such as integrated sensor cleaning, Live View (an electronic viewfinder mode) and a larger 3.0" primary color LCD.

1DX[link]

Announced 18 October 2011, the Canon EOS-1D X is to be the latest upgrade in Canon's flagship line of professional full-frame digital SLR cameras. In the interest of focusing on burst speed and high ISO performance, Canon lowered the resolution of the sensor in the Canon EOS-1D X slightly to 18 megapixels. Its maximum native ISO, however, will now reach 51,200 ISO whereas its predecessor, the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, only went up to 3200 ISO. That will make the sensor a full 16 times more sensitive to light at its highest ISO setting, and 8 times more sensitive than Canon's previous highest ISO of 12,800 ISO found in the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV. The Canon EOS-1D X is expected to be available for purchase in March 2012.^{[dated info]}

The EOS-1Ds Mark III is a digital SLR camera body by Canon designed for professional photographers. The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III is successor to the EOS-1Ds Mark II and was announced in August 2007.^[1] The camera features a full-frame 21.1 megapixel CMOS sensor with 14 bit A/D converters for a total colour depth of 16,384 tones per pixel. It features a three-inch (76 mm) LCD screen, capable of "Live View," and dual DIGIC III processors allowing it to shoot at up to five frames per second.

The EOS-1Ds features many technologies first seen in the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, such as the 63-zone exposure metering, 19 cross-type auto focus system, a 3.0" LCD with Live View mode and EOS Integrated Cleaning System.

The EOS-1Ds Mark III features a 21-megapixel sensor. It is has a higher pixel count than the 16.7 megapixel sensor seen in the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II. The CMOS sensor incorporates a new pixel design with on-chip noise reduction circuitry. It can shoot in 3200 ISO when necessary. The 1Ds Mark III also features Highlight Tone Priority mode, which boosts the dynamic range for highlights.^[2]

Auto focus[link]

The auto focus system includes 19 cross-type sensors at f/2.8, spread across the AF area.^[2] There are 26 more assist points. The camera features an AF-ON button.

LCD and live view[link]

The back of the camera has a 3.0-inch (76 mm), 230K pixel LCD monitor, larger than the 2.0" display of the Mark II. Live View is a mode which uses this LCD as an electronic viewfinder, with optional grid overlay and histogram. When the camera is tethered to a computer this mode can be used to compose, adjust and capture images using software supplied with the camera.

Firmware update[link]

Canon occasionally releases firmware updates that fix bugs in the camera's firmware. The updates are available from the Canon website.^[3] As of February 2012, the latest update is version 1.2.0.

Reliability[link]

Canon has rated the shutter durability of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and Canon EOS-1D Mark III at 300,000 cycles, significantly more than other EOS cameras. The 1Ds Mark III also has a new EOS Integrated Cleaning System that removes dust automatically. The camera is weather sealed against moisture. The camera beeps if the door is opened while images are being written.

As of 20 February 2008 there are reports of some cameras having misalignment between the image sensor and the viewfinder/prism assembly. Canon is reported to have acknowledged the problems and is correcting affected cameras.^[4]

Vincent Laforet (born 1975, Switzerland) is a French American director and photographer. Laforet shared the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography with two other photographers as a member of The New York Times staff's coverage of the post 9/11 events overseas that captured "the pain and the perseverance of people enduring protracted conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan."^[1] In 2006, Laforet became the Times' s first national contract photographer.^[2] He has been sent on assignment by Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life. He is represented by the Stockland Martel agency.

In 2002, PDN named Vincent Laforêt as one of the “30 photographers under 30 to watch″. In 2005, American Photo Magazine recognized Laforêt as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Photography.” He and four other photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for their post-9/11 coverage overseas in 2002. His work has been recognized in the Communication Arts Annual, PDN Annual, The SPD Magazine Cover of the Year (Society of Publication Designers), The World Press Photo Awards, The Pictures of the Year Competition, The Overseas Press Club, The National Headliners Awards, The Pro-Football Hall of Fame. Vincent is a Canon Explorer of Light and Canon Printmaster and serves as consultant to companies such as Apple, Adobe, Carl Zeiss, Leica, Canon, Bogen, Lexar, and X-Rite. He and his work have been profiled on CNN and Good Morning America.

In 2008 Laforet directed "Reverie", the first widely available short film shot with the Canon 5d mark II camera. The video has been cited by proposers of the use of DSLR cameras in digital cinematography^[3] and has been heralded as one of the films that launched the HDSLR movement.

In 2010 he launched a nationwide film competition "Beyond The Still" and he directed the final chapter the film which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. He is a DGA Director (Director's Guild of America) and of the ICG (International Cinematographers' Guild - Local 600.) He has directed a number of short films and numerous commercials.

In 2011, he was chosen by Canon. to be one of the first 4 filmmakers to shoot with their first cinema camera, the Canon C300, and he directed the film "Mobius" which premiered at Paramount Studios. The opening was attended by Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Robert Rodriguez, and JJ Abrams.

In 2011 his first book VISUALS STORIES (see below for link) was released by Peachpit and describes his thought process and approach to a variety of assignments throughout his photography career.

Laforet has been awarded 3 of the prestigious Cannes Lions (Platinum, Gold, Silver) for his commercial directing work.

Laforet attended the Dalton School and received his B.S. from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1997. He is fluent in French and speaks Russian and Spanish. He lives in Manhattan Beach, California^[2]

Laforet was an adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism's Graduate School of Journalism, The International Center of Photography and the Poynter Institute. He was inducted in Northwestern's Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010.

Laforet is one of the speakers at the Vimeo Festival+Awards 2012.^[4]
