A new footbridge will shortly be installed across the River Croal, near Bolton. The existing bridge, called Wilson's Bridge, was condemned and closed to pedestrian traffic some years ago.
To enable the 70-tonne crane to access the site, trees alongside the lock flight at Nob End will first have to be trimmed or removed. This is, of course, a great benefit to the society, as many of these trees would have to be removed to restore the canal to operation.
This time lapse video is a record of the 2014 partial removal of the 1.8m tall Moses Gate weir on the River Croal, Irwell Catchment, Radcliffe, UK. Also visible is some of the rivers natural adjustment in response to the removal during the following weeks.
The weir was a redundant feature of the industrial revolution, impeding fish on their migratory spawning route and disrupting local sediment transport and habitat dynamics. Over the next ~18/24 months following the weir removal, the river will become more natural in appearance and function and support a wider range of connected habitats. In the middle of all this, a Canadian mining company is attempting to construct North America's largest open-pit copper mine in the heart of Bristol Bay. I sought out tribal leaders, scientists, policy makers, fishermen, artists, authors and chefs - all with a shared knowledge and passion for wild salmon as cultural treasure, mystery from the sea and food for the planet. Many spoke of salmon surviving ice ages and earthquakes for millennia. Our shared journey is in asking if wild salmon have a chance of surviving us.
