Police on Sunday issued a notice to occupants of illegal floors of the beleaguered Campa Cola Housing Society at Worli in Mumbai. The notice, issued by senior police inspector Deepak More, warned the occupants of action under section 149 of CrPc if any law and order issue is created during eviction, the deadline for which expires on Monday.

Even as the apex court took suo moto cognizance of the matter and passed an order staying the demolition till May 31, 2014 giving seven more months to the Campa Cola society residents to vacate the flats, questions have also been raised over the conduct of the occupants. Not everybody is convinced that the residents of the Campa Cola society were unaware of the illegality. The BMC had issued its first stop work notice in 1984 after the developers built beyond the permitted limit of five floors. Another stop work notice was subsequently issued in 1986.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have now threatened to disconnect power and water supplies to the illegal flats in the Campa Cola society in Worli. The society is locked in a stand-off between BMC officials and the residents after the municipal authorities visited the area to demolish the illegal houses in the society after the Supreme Court deadline ended on Monday. On October 1, the Supreme Court had ordered the residents of over 90 illegal flats to vacate their houses by November 11.
