Mr. Lif (born Jeffrey Haynes) is an American hip hop artist from Boston, Massachusetts. Often noted for his political lyrics, he has released two studio albums on Definitive Jux and one on Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Mr. Lif is also a member of the hip hop group The Perceptionists with long-time friends and collaborators Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One.

Mr. Lif grew up in the neighborhood of Brighton in Boston, Massachusetts. After attending the Dedham, MA private school Noble and Greenough School, he went on to attend Colgate University for two years, and he eventually dropped out. He became a performer in 1994. Mr. Lif's family ancestry is Bajan.

Influenced by legendary MCs like Chuck D, KRS One, Rakim & Guru, Mr. Lif began releasing singles in the late '90s, when party rap and gangsta rap were the dominant styles for hip hop music, but Mr. Lif's lyrical agenda was a political and socially conscious one. Mr. Lif released his first single, Elektro, in 1998, attracting the attention of labels Grand Royal and Definitive Jux. Working closely with producer and Definitive Jux label head El-P, Lif released a series of critically acclaimed singles and EPs, starting with Enters the Colossus in 2000. In 2000 and 2001, he won the Kahlua Boston Music Awards for Outstanding Rap/Hip Hop Act.^[1] Touring kept him busy for the next year, but he still found time to release the Cro-Magnon single and a live CD. His track "Pull Out Your Cut" was featured in the soundtrack to the ESPN Video Game ESPN NFL 2K5.

In 2002, Mr. Lif released a pair of concept releases. The Emergency Rations EP bookended collaborations with Edan and Akrobatik in an MC abduction scenario, while the I Phantom full-length formed a saga that led him from birth to apocalypse. He revisited his Akrobatik collaboration in 2005, when the pair joined producer DJ Fakts One to form The Perceptionists, who released Black Dialogue, also on Definitive Jux. One year later, he returned with Mo' Mega, his follow-up to I Phantom, featuring eight productions from El-P and features from Murs, Aesop Rock, and Blueprint.^[2] Mr. Lif has also collaborated with Otis Grove, Thievery Corporation and Anomie Belle.^[3]

I Heard It Today was released on Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises in 2009. Mr Lif embraced I Heard It Today using the album as a tool to address various political issues affecting people all over the world. I Heard It Today is the third full-length studio album by Mr. Lif. The album was released on April 21, 2009 on Mr. Lif's own label Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Mr. Lif has stated that the album is "dedicated to capturing the pulse of this tumultuous era we're living through."

2001 Boston Music Awards[link]

The 2001 Boston Music Awards were held at the Orpheum Theatre on Thursday April 19, the evening was hosted by MTV VJ Dave Holmes. Taking home two awards apiece were Aimee Mann and Mr. Lif. Mann won Female Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year (Save Me). Mr. Lif won Outstanding Rap/Hip-Hop Act and Outstanding Rap/Hip-Hop Album (Enters the Colossus).

The Perceptionists[link]

The Perceptionists are a rap group composed of rappers Akrobatik (born Jared Bridgeman) and Mr. Lif (Jeffrey Haynes) and DJ Fakts One (Jason Goler), based in Boston, MA. Friends since their early days, the trio first started working together on Fakts One's college radio show in the late '90s, formally adopting the name the Perceptionists in 2000. A 2004 mixtape called The Razor was the trio's underground bow, before the official debut Black Dialogue was released in early 2005. All three members have had exemplary solo careers thus far, and are still making music: some of their more acclaimed releases include Lif's I, Phantom and Emergency Rations (both on Definitive Jux); Akrobatik's stellar 2003 full-length debut Balance (on Coup D'État); and Fakts, currently working on his solo debut, is featured on all aforementioned releases, plus his own party-moving singles, like "The Show Starter" (Coup D'État).

In Norse mythology, Líf (Old Norse "life"^[1]) and Lífþrasir (Old Norse "the one striving after life"^[2] or "thriving remnant"^[1])—male and female respectively—are two humans who are foretold to survive the events of Ragnarök by hiding in Hoddmímis holt, and after the flames have sated, to repopulate the newly risen and fertile world. Líf and Lífthrasir are attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Scholarly theories have been proposed about the underlying meaning and origins of the two.

In the poem Vafþrúðnismál, collected in the Poetic Edda, the god Odin poses a question to the jötunn Vafþrúðnir, asking who among mankind will survive when the winter Fimbulvetr occurs. Vafþrúðnir responds that they will be Líf and Lífþrasir, that the two will have hidden in the wood of Hoddmímis holt, they will consume the morning dew as food, and "from them generations will spring".^[3]

In chapter 53 of the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning, High tells Gangleri (king Gylfi in disguise) that two people, Líf and Lífþrasir, will lie hid in Hoddmímis holt during "Surt's fire", and that "from these people there will be descended such a great progeny that the world will be inhabited." The above mentioned stanza of Vafþrúðnismál is then quoted.^[4]

Theories[link]

Carolyne Larrington notes that it is nowhere expressly stated what will happen to the world tree Yggdrasil at Ragnarök, points to a connection between Mímir and Yggdrasil in the poem Völuspá, and theorizes that "it is possible that Hoddmimir is another name for Mimir, and that the two survivors hide in Yggdrasill."^[5]

Rudolf Simek theorizes that the survival of Líf and Lífþrasir is "a case of reduplication of the anthropogeny, understandable from the cyclic nature of the Eddic eschatology." Simek says that Hoddmímis holt "should not be understood literally as a wood or even a forest in which the two keep themselves hidden, but rather as an alternative name for the world-tree Yggdrasill. Thus, the creation of mankind from tree trunks (Askr, Embla) is repeated after the Ragnarǫk as well." Simek says that in Germanic regions, the concept of mankind originating from trees is ancient. Simek additionally points out legendary parallels in a Bavarian legend of a shepherd who lives inside a tree, whose descendants repopulate the land after life there has been wiped out by plague (citing a retelling by F. R. Schröder). In addition, Simek points to an Old Norse parallel in the figure of Örvar-Oddr, "who is rejuvenated after living as a tree-man (Ǫrvar-Odds saga 24–27)".^[6]

DJ Hype is a stage name of drum and bass producer and DJ, Kevin Ford. His 1993 track, "Shot in the Dark", appeared in the UK Singles Chart in 1993.^[1]

Biography[link]

He was an early DJ on one of London's pirate radio stations, Fantasy FM, and has been popular on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ (in 1994 and 1995, respectively) at the UK's Hardcore Awards.^[2] He also presented on the London based radio station Kiss 100, and was a player in Suburban Base’s compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection.

DJ Hype began producing in 1989, engineering and co-producing tracks (including "Exorcist" and "The Bee") for Kickin', Strictly Underground, and Suburban Base.

His Ganja Records label gained popularity, primarily through dance floor fillers such as "You Must Think First", "Tiger Style" and DJ Zinc's "Super Sharp Shooter". Their popularity peaked with the release of their first album in 1996: Still Smokin' , a label compilation released jointly by Ganja and Pascal's Frontline imprint. Re-released in 1997, its success also led to a major label deal with BMG's Parousia sub-label and the establishment of True Playaz, a Hype led DJ and production unit also including DJ Zinc, Pascal, and Rude Bwoy Monty. His 1997 Parousia EP, New Frontiers, with Ganja Kru, reached #56 in the UK Albums Chart.^[1]

DJ Hype is known for his jump up DJ sets, including appearances at the Playaz night at Fabric.

On 30 March 2009, Hype released a new double album mix compilation on Rhino Records, entitled DJ Hype presents Drum and Bass Essentials.

Anomie Belle ( /ænəˈmiː ˈbɛl/; born Toby Campbell 7 August 1980) is an American musician. Originally a classical violinist and songwriter from Portland, Anomie began performing and recording her own music as a child. She has since worked as a musician and producer in Madrid, Glasgow, Amsterdam, New York, Buenos Aires, and London before moving to Seattle in 2006.^[1] Anomie Belle is also active as a film composer.^[2]

Anomie Belle is noted for provocative vocals/lyrics set to complex, often down-tempo, beats and layers of herself on strings, electric guitars, and synths. Haunting melodies and experimental soundscapes transport listeners through the crowded nature of their modern minds and urban spaces. Her material grapples with issues ranging from suburban alienation, human spirituality, sexuality and critiques of consumerism, corporate power and inequality.^[3] Anomie Belle is also openly queer^[4], and throughout her work she blurs typical representations of sexuality.

Anomie Belle released her debut album Sleeping Patterns in November 2008.^[5] In support of her debut release, Anomie Belle embarked on a West Coast tour with Little Dragon and Manuok in 2008. Sleeping Patterns garnered further commercial success after the song How Can I Be Sure appeared in the Xbox 360 game Alan Wake.

Anomie Belle toured extensively in 2009, first with The Album Leaf and then with legendary UK trip-hopper Tricky in the US and Canada. The original live band featured two additional female vocalists doing harmonies, with Belle at the lead performing all instrumentation and live programming by looping herself. Live drums were added prior to the tour with Tricky, and are currently performed by Sean Lane, formerly of Fences. Later that same year, Anomie Belle added former Matt Pond PA cellist Dana Feder to the live band before touring with renowned film composer Gustavo Santaolalla's band Bajofondo.

In 2010 Anomie Belle would again join The Album Leaf, as well as Sea Wolf, for several dates on the West Coast. In addition to performing her own music, she also joined The Album Leaf for their entire set, forming the Anomie Belle String Quartet with her band mates.^[6]

Anomie Belle's second album, The Crush released on September 13, 2011 and includes collaborations with Mr. Lif and Jon Auer of The Posies’.^[7] Anomie Belle followed-up The Crush with the Inky Drips and Machine EPs, featuring members of the Sneaker Pimps, Mr. Lif, Big Spider's Back and several remixes.^[8] Trespassers William lead vocalist Anna-Lynne Williams has been featured as both a live and recorded guest vocalist. Hip Hop artist Mr. Lif and Anomie Belle have often collaborated on stage during their respective performances.^[9]

Anomie Belle contributed her vocal and production talents to several tracks on Eighty One, the latest album from Ninja Tune artist Yppah. Anomie has also appeared as a featured artist during live Yppah performances, performing on guitar, keys, violin and vocals in support of the album.

Hideaki Ishi (石 英明, Ishi Hideaki^?) (born 1962, Tokyo, Japan), better known as DJ Krush, is a producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of jazz and soul samples.

Ishi was born in 1962 in Tokyo. Ishi dropped out of school at an early age and joined a local gang, and a few years later, the yakuza. Early into his career as a yakuza underling, Ishi discovered a severed finger wrapped in paper on his desk. Later, after discovering that it had belonged to his best friend, he decided to leave the yakuza and cut ties with the criminal underworld.^[1]

In the early 1980s, Ishi went to the movies with his girlfriend and saw the film Wild Style, the first hip hop motion picture directed by Charlie Ahearn. He was inspired to become a hip hop musician, and made the firm decision to become a DJ. The day after seeing this movie, he headed to instrument shops looking for equipment. At this time the term "mixer" was unknown to most of Tokyo's electronic store salesmen. After a hard time buying the things he needed, Ishi started his career as one of the first hip hop artists in Japan.

Aside from being considered one of the pioneers of Japanese hip hop,^[2] Ishi has established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the hip hop industry, both in Japan and abroad. Upon entering the industry, Ishi, with his experimental beats and instrumental sounds, changed the face of hip-hop at a time when it was dominated by the American rap scene.^[3] He is reluctant to identify his music with any particular genre, for it would place limits on his listeners and on his talents. He has been regarded as ambient, trip hop, some combination of the two, and hip hop. DJ Krush prefers to exercise an ideological distance from the genres he is usually grouped into, while maintaining a healthy appreciation for all music forms and styles.^[4] In 1996, DJ Krush contributed to the AIDS benefit album Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip produced by the Red Hot Organization.
