On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman pits an American icon against itself. Since 1984 AM General's Humvee has served as the U.S. Military's primary multipurpose workhorse. However, after adding nearly three tons of armor plating, the already slow, ill handling beast gets slower and clumsier. One solution is to replace it with a new truck, but that would cost us a fortune. The other comes from Banks Engineering, which adds more sophisticated turbocharging as well as a revised, active suspension. If the Humvee is going to go down in history as the truck version of the B-52, it needs upgrades similar to what Banks is selling. That said, the Banks Humvee does cost a good deal more than the base Humvee. However, it's a much cheaper alternative to something like an MRAP or the Oshkosh L-ATV. But is it that much better than the regular production Humvee? Watch and find out! On this episode of Roadkill, it's Freiburger in the Super Bee versus Finnegan in the '67 Camaro as the guys make the trip from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and back to go race at the Midnight Drags at Rocky Mountain Raceways in hopes of running the Bee on nitrous for the first time since the Hemi was installed. Which car will work best over 1,500 miles of mayem in three days? The 700hp, blown Crusher Camaro is HOT ROD's longest-term project car, surviving 20 years at the magazine. David Freiburger's 675hp Hemi ¹70 Dodge Super Bee is his first car, having been with him 30 years. Both cars suffer from magazine-project-car syndrome: getting brief spurts of attention followed by long periods of neglect. For the first time in years, both cars were running and driving at the same time. The Crusher Camaro is a '67 model that was purchased for $700 in 1994 during California's car-crushing program; it was rescued from the parking lot of a junkyard where it was about to be handed in for crushing. It's been through a number of engines in its time at HOT ROD magazine, and the most recent is a 489ci bi-block (4.280 bore, 4.250 stroke) with 9.3:1 compression. It has a small, 224-at-0.050 Comp hydraulic roller cam, Holley oval-port heads, and a Weiand 8-71 supercharger with two Holley 850HP carbs. The engine makes 700 hp and 720 lb-ft on 5 psi boost, but is tame enough to drive anywhere. The transmission is a Gearstar 4L85E that's really awesome, and the Ford 9-inch is loaded with 3.50 gears. The car is styled with Center Line Auto Drags and a nose-high stance to look like a street machine of the early ¹80s. It has run 10.60 at 125 in the quarter-mile in the same trim seen in this video. Freiburger's ¹70 Dodge Super Bee is powered by a 10:0:1-compression, 484ci Hemi with ported iron cylinder heads and a Comp solid roller camshaft. It also uses a Holley Dominator carb on a custom dual-plane intake manifold by Dick Landy, whose shop built the long-block in 1995. It made 675 hp on the engine dyno, but in the car is has smaller headers, fairly restrictive exhaust, and a mechanical fan that pull it down to around 600. The trans is a Gearstar 727 Torqueflite backed by a Gear Vendors under/overdrive, and the Strange 60 rearend has 3.73 gears (a little too high for the natuarally aspirated combo). The car weights 4,050 pounds with the driver, and has run 11.80 at 118 mph on the motor. Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh explains why the new 2014 Cadillac CTS has been named Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2014. Motor Trend's Car of the Year program is open to any all-new or substantially upgraded 2014 automobile. Rather than being compared against one another, contending vehicles are first put through Motor Trend's full battery of performance tests to measure acceleration, braking, and limit handling. All contenders are then evaluated on three separate courses at a professional automotive test center before finalists are selected. Out of 22 contending 2014 models, Motor Trend's judges picked seven Car of the Year finalists, in addition to the Cadillac CTS: BMW 4 Series Chevrolet Corvette Jaguar F-Type Kia Forte Mazda3 Mazda6 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Each finalist is then driven on a real-world road loop that provides a range of surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. In the final phase of Car of the Year, Motor Trend judges debate and evaluate each vehicle against the awards six key criteria: Design Advancement - well-executed exterior and interior styling; innovative vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials. Engineering Excellence - total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues; cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer. Efficiency - low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle's competitive set. Safety - a vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm during a crash. Value - competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment. Performance of Intended Function - how well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do. After 10 full days of testing, driving and deliberating, Motor Trend selected the CTS as its Car of the Year for the second time in six years. The 2014 Cadillac CTS is offered with three powertrains. A 272-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard and EPA-rated for 20/30 mpg city/highway. A 321-hp naturally aspirated V-6 is available. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. Exclusive to the rear-wheel-drive CTS Vsport is the all-new 420-hp 3.6-liter Cadillac Twin-Turbo V-6 engine. The 2014 CTS is also the first Cadillac vehicle to receive the brand's eight-speed automatic. Pricing starts at $46,025, including a $925 destination charge. Since the first Motor Trend Car of the Year was awarded to the Cadillac brand in 1949, Cadillac has won the title three additional times -- for the full brand again in 1952, with the 1992 Seville Touring Sedan, and with the second-generation CTS sedan in 2008.
