After viewing the video of the "Cholinergic Cruise" -- please consider the following questions. You may also wish to read the questions first, and then look for hints within the skit. Cholinergic Questions: 1. The Captain of the Cholinergic cruise begins by saying that those aboard will "get their heart rates down" and "constrict their pupils." Why would these types of responses occur on a cholinergic drug? What other peripheral responses might you expect to see? 2. What happens to sweat and tears (body secretions) with cholinergic drugs? Can you describe that mechanism? 3. What is anti-cholinesterase? And how is it effective for Myasthenia Gravis? (Which character on the cruise represents the drug that would be used for this disease?) 4. What does Bethanecol do and how does it work? (Think about the character "Beth" : what problem did she have -- but was relieved once aboard the cholinergic cruise?" 5. In what part of the nervous system does an anti-choinergic for Alzheimer's works? (Think about "grandpapa" in the skit -- where does he sit?) 6. Use the characters from this skit as exemplars, what are the indications for cholinergics? 7. What are some potentially fatal cholinergic agents? 8. What are some signs of excessive cholinergic stimulation? (See the "Later That Day" portion.)
