The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement
Haven’t heard about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a neoliberal and imperialist wet dream? Not surprising since it is being negotiated in secret and Abbott will try to spring it on us soon enough. I have written about it in the next Red Flag, due out on Wednesday. Subscribe now. And yes, we have digital subscriptions too. https://shop.redflag.org.au/?q=product-category%2Fred-flag-subscriptions (1)

NSA hacks Rupert Murdoch's phones
In breaking news the NSA has confirmed it has hacked Rupert Murdoch’s private phones for eleven years. ‘The fight against terrorism knows no bounds,’ spokesthing Joseph Dzhugashvili said.  Barack Obama said ‘Of course.’ Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott denied Australia’s spy agencies had broken any AUSTRALIAN laws in helping the Americans. Put the slipper in
Barnaby Joyce: “This is not thousands of dollars. This is hundreds of dollars.” Like the $900 Peter Slipper claimed for his alleged wine tour you mean? Treat Brandis and Joyce like Slipper. Put them on trial too. (0)

Jonathan Moylan, stunts, the working class and fighting climate change

Stunts like Moylan’s will draw attention to the issues at least momentarily and I defend his actions. But to really address climate change, to stop the mining of fossil fuels and to move rapidly to a totally renewable energy society requires the working class entering on to the stage of history and overthrowing the impediment to real change – capitalism. The working class has to be our focus for fundamental change.

Climate change: the snake oil salesmen of capitalism battle it out

Tony Abbott has concocted a climate change ‘direct-action’ plan that should appeal to every denier. Like Labor’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme it pretends to do something while refusing to attack the big polluters. Abbott’s ‘plan’ doesn’t stop CO2 emissions; it encourages them. According to Government figures (suspect, but likely to have some truth in them), Abbott’s scheme will [...]

Penny Wong: an insult to demonstrators and intelligence

On Saturday we demonstrated across Australia to reject the Rudd Government’s climate change ‘response’, which is a crime against present and future generations.

The Minerals Council: mining bullshit

Employment in the mining industry will double over the next decade. Scaremongering about job losses is so the bosses can get even more money out of us.

Isn’t the market wonderful?

The market is a wondrous thing.  It solves all our problems though some mystic and magical force. Occasionally the potion doesn’t work.  All we end up with is a sour taste and a sick stomach.  Take the environment.  The market has been a wonderful success there, ensuring that profit comes before such minor things as [...]

Follow the Maldives Kevin

The Maldives is going carbon neutral. Force Rudd, the Mister Magoo of climate change, to follow them and lead the developed world.

Jobs and posting

I have just accepted a part time job offer working on environmental law.  I am pretty excited by the prospect of learning about a whole new area of policy and law.  For the blog it means my posts might be slightly less frequent (although I love doing this so much I might just end up [...]

Emissions trading: a pollution and profits bonanza

Labor’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is about profits for the polluters, not cutting greenhouse gas emissions, Liz Ross argues in the latest edition of Socialist Alternative. Rudd’s done it again! One more broken promise. Remember when Labor said they’d tear up WorkChoices – well we’ve got WorkChoices-not-so-lite instead and they kept all the “special” laws [...]

The Peter Garrett Good Government Guide – An Oily Analysis

Ive used the lyrics from some of Midnight Oil’s songs to measure the worth of the Rudd Government.  Peter Garrett is (or technically was) the Oils’ lead singer. They have re-formed briefly for some bushfire relief concerts this weekend. Garrett’s day job is as the Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts in Rudd’s Labor Government. Here are some [...]

Labor’s Carbon Pollution Scheme – the R’s fallen out

Rudd will only act on green jobs and green energy if we force him. Let’s mobilise for a new world.
