March 14, 2014 - UC Berkeley 18 Ius Soli is a grassroots documentary that tells the stories of 18 young people born and raised in Italy whose parents are originally from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. They go to school in Italy and they speak the local language and dialects; they have never visited the countries that their parents are from, nor do they speak their parents' languages. Yet, these young people are not officially recognized as Italian citizens. 18 Ius Soli provides a provocative window into worldwide and multiform movements for citizenship rights: the lived dilemma for Italian‐born children of immigrants in Italy mirrors the struggles facing undocumented DREAMers in the US and beyond. Following this screening, Italian‐Ghanaian filmmaker and activist Fred Kuwornu led a critical conversation about race, national identity, and multiculturalism with U.C. Berkeley professors Kwame Nimako and Laura Fantone.
