1958 CURSE OF THE DEMON TRAILER DANA ANDREWS
Trailer for the 1957 Jacques Tourneur-directed horror classic, CURSE OF THE DEMON, starring Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins and Niall McGinnis. The film, based on the M.R. James story, "Casting the Runes," was filmed and released in England under the title NIGHT OF THE DEMON, with a 95 minute running time. Per Wikipedia: "The film's production was turbulent due to clashing ideas between producer Hal E. Chester on one side and Tourneur and writer Charles Bennett on the other. Although the original plan was not to show a literal demon, producer Chester inserted a monster over the objections of the writer, director and star Dana Andrews. To accelerate the pace, the film was trimmed down to 83 minutes (and retitled Curse of the Demon) in the US where it played the second half of a double feature bill with both THE TRUE STORY OF LYNN STUART and THE REVENGE OF FRANKENENSTEIN (1958). In 2002, Sony Pictures released both versions together on a single DVD. NIGHT OF THE DEMON was included by director Martin Scorcese on his list of the 11 scariest horror films of all time. The Curse of the Monkey Gem:
Episode VII: "Welcome Home"
Written & Directed by Aron Korney
2009
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Curse of the Monkey Gem is a personal attempt for me to direct a brief sample of how I might go about shooting a generic 1940's Film Noir. Experimenting with with cheesy one-liners, cigarette smoke, dynamic & static angles, surreal German Expressionistic lighting, the setting of the crime drama (the protagonist is a P.I. named Carl), sexism, and so much more made this film an absolute delight to write, storyboard, direct, & so forth.
I was very lucky to have a plethora of geeky friends who insisted that they help out on set (and eat most of the pizza we ordered...AND bother me incessantly to finish editing this thing and show it to them already, happy now everyone? It's finally up! Let me be!) to make this film possible. Yes, you may notice that there's a little bit of violence alluded in this film, so please, put the kids to bed first.
Please sit back, have a smoke, grab a glass of brandy, turn down your Beethoven LP, turn on Howdy Doody for the kids in other room, and enjoy a brief glimpse as to how Aron Korney would direct his own 40's Crime Drama.

SPECIAL THANKS:
I extend my sincerest gratitude towards Hanah Yendler, Daniel Gelman, Omer Ben-Zvi, & Natan Bihari who each took time out of their busy schedules to make this production so much more amazing than I could ever have made it on my own (Omer, that's some good moral support, I'll keep you in mind for my next production). I'd also like to thank my amazing actors Brentan Schellenbach, Seth Rotkin & Eyal BenDavid. You guys were not only stellar, but patient as hell in this process. Especially during the ADR sessions when I didn't even have food to offer (although Brentan did get a lollypop...). Furthermore, I want to thank Laida Lertxundi, my professor, for challenging me to make an original film which not only entertains, but also goes against every every rule in the Dogma '95 manifesto. Challenge accepted. Finally, Caroline Anguiano, you were a perfect partner to work with. Patient, organized & most of all, not afraid of my energy. Much appreciated. I think that I still owe you a little money for the pizza. There, now it's public knowledge.
Ryan Willis & Michael Trigilio, you each have my appreciation as well for watching this film and giving me your input. It's almost entirely because of both of your inputs that I'm taking the plunge and using this as a film in my USC application. You both show so much support for me as a director and it does not go unnoticed.
Romain Delpech, thank you for being my crazy french friend who knows how to spell Film Noir correctly.
Oh, and my parents. They did something useful in the process I'm sure.

MAHLER SYMPHONY Nº10 I VALERY GERGIEV & LSO LIVE IN PARIS
After Mahler's death there was no immediate attempt to complete the symphony, or render it in a state where it could be performed, although figures such as Paul Stefan described the high quality of the work as drafted. Arnold Schönberg famously expressed the opinion that no one could possibly write a Tenth Symphony without being close to the hereafter (see Curse of the ninth); and a mistaken report led Richard Specht to suggest Mahler wanted the manuscript burned after his death. Hence it was only in the 1920s that Alma Mahler-Werfel asked the composer Ernst Krenek to make a fair copy of Mahler's orchestral draft for a festival of performances of Mahler works, and at about the same time some of the manuscripts were published by the company of Paul Zsolnay in facsimile (1924). The facsimile made evident that the stress of Mahler's final year had not adversely affected the composition, and that the draft contained passages of great beauty. Much of the manuscript, however, was too difficult to read and seemingly too chaotic for the unbroken continuity of the music to be clearly apparent.
In 1924 Krenek made a fair copy of only the first (Adagio) and third (Purgatorio) movements, and might have made a fair copy of the second movement, but as Mahler's draft of the Scherzo was very much patchier this was evidently less feasible. Alban Berg was enlisted to proofread the work, but his suggested corrections were never incorporated, while at the same time some unauthorised changes were introduced, possibly by one of the conductors of the first two performances, Franz Schalk and Alexander von Zemlinsky. Krenek is supposed to have renounced the changes to his version, which was subsequently published. Performances of the Krenek-Schalk/Zemlinsky version have been moderately successful, but the third movement is not generally convincing when taken out of context between the second and fourth movements: it is possible that some of the conductors who have refused to perform the Tenth, most famously Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein, took exception to such a piecemeal representation.
In 1923, Alma had also sent a copy of the score to Willem Mengelberg in Amsterdam with the addition that two parts (obviously, the Adagio and Purgatorio) were 'absolutely performable'. Briefly after Schalk performed Krenek's score (with his own additions) on October 12, 1924, Alma sent what is believed to be Schalk's score to Mengelberg,[2] who subsequently prepared his own edition with the aid of his secondant Cornelis Dopper. This version uses a larger orchestra and makes significant changes in dynamic markings and tempi.[3] It was premiered on November 27, 1924, in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and subsequently played a number of times under Mengelberg's baton.
It was soon realised that a performing version of only two movements did not give listeners a clear idea of the entire symphony, let alone constitute a complete artistic statement, so in the 1940s the American Mahler enthusiast Jack Diether tried to encourage several notable composers to realise the work. Figures such as Shostakovich, Schoenberg, and Britten (all of whom had been considerably influenced by the works of Mahler), refused, and instead the task was taken up by musicologists: early attempts at realising the entire work were made in America by Clinton Carpenter (completed 1949, subsequently revised 1966), in Germany by Hans Wollschläger (1954–1962, withdrawn), and in England by Joe Wheeler (1953–1965) and Deryck Cooke. A Hidden Child in War-Torn Holland: Emmy Weisz’s Story
Born in a suburb of Brussels at the end of 1930, Emma van Dijk moved with her family to a Jewish neighborhood in Amsterdam at the age of 3. Jews were held in high esteem in the Netherlands in the 1930s, and people wanted to have Jewish employers. Emma was a sickly, spoiled, romantic child with few friends. She lived in books. Philp van Dijk, her father, was conservative and religious. Juliette Celine Anholt, her mother, was from a liberal background whose family had been largely assimilated into Dutch society. Unsuited by temperament and values, her parents divorced when Emma was 6. Philip, who had lived in Germany in the 1920s and held German culture in high regard, married Keetje Kalf, an orthodox Jew, in 1941. Juliette had a series of boyfriends and two children out of wedlock. In spite of a dysfunctional family and genteel poverty, Emma’s childhood was generally happy−that is to say, until May 1940 when the Netherlands was invaded by the Nazis and Jews lost their civil and political rights, endured indignities and deprivation, and were arrested without cause and were taken away to transit or concentration camps such as Westerbork.
In 1941 Emma lost her Gentile friends, wore a yellow star, and was forced to attend a Jewish school. People and other children sometimes cursed at her, yelled Jew, and even threw mud at her. Two family members committed suicide in desperation. Her father tried to commit suicide and was admitted into a private psychiatric clinic. When Emma was 12, her home was raided by German soldiers. The soldiers drew their revolvers when she screamed at them, but then they left abruptly. By the middle of 1942 there were fewer and fewer students at her school. Jews were being rounded up systematically. Many family members, including Keetje, her father’s in-laws, and her mother’s common-in-law husband disappeared and never returned. Her father made the fatal mistake of going to Poland to rescue Keetje. Juliette, Emma’s mother, was bold and shrewd. She paid money for her two other children to be raised elsewhere, she arranged for a man to declare his paternity of these children, and she obtained forged, identity papers for herself and Emma. Juliette even rented out rooms to German soldiers in her apartment. Emma went into hiding, moving from place to place in Amsterdam with acquaintances and strangers. She resided in a mental institution for a short period of time, and shared a bed with an incontinent, old lady. She left Amsterdam, went south to Limburg, and then journeyed to Friesland in the north where it was required that she would be fluent in the Frisian language. She had several betrayals and narrow escapes. After the war, she met and married Erich Weisz, another Holocaust survivor.
Emmy Weisz’s archives (called the Anholt and van Dijk family fonds, the names of her parents) are fragmentary in nature: photos of herself, family members, and her fifth-grade class; identity and ration cards; postcards written by her stepmother; school notebooks; and cloth-covered folk dolls of an Orthodox Jewish couple of Polish origin, given to Emma by her father in 1941. This archival material is an indelible link to Emmy Weisz’s struggle and determination as a Holocaust survivor. On many occasions she has given testimony of her arduous and harrowing experiences as a hidden child. She currently lives in Hamilton, has raised a family, and still works as a social worker and psychotherapist.

God Is ______: “God Is One” 05-12-13am
Deut. 6: 4-9
Intro: I read about a mother who raised two sons. One lost his temper
And killed the other, in reality she lost them both.
• I read about a woman who lived 90 years in the despair and sometimes bitter jealousy of childlessness.
• I read about a single mom, struggling to raise a boy, feeling all alone.
• I read about a family whose children were born of incest.
I read all four of these family stories in the first 15 pages of this Bible!
1) Everyone feels the pain of family that is somehow not what you wanted it to be, Dysfunctional & Disappointed.
2) Each one feels they are the only family so messed up.
We did not gather this Lord’s Day to put our perfect families on display; we gathered to Worship the Father from Whom every Family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

At the center of our Lives, We place Two Exclusive Claims
We Make Exclusive Claims about God.
Exp – We claim to Know God. He is YHWH and He is One.
Dt. 4: 35, 39 – The Only God has Revealed Himself to us.
• Creation, History/People, Scripture and Jesus! (John 1)
• Jesus Is LORD = Perfect revelation of the One and Only!
YHWH is Our God; YHWH is the One and Only! (unique)
Jesus is LORD; Jesus is the One and Only!
Exclusive Claims Attacked in an Age of Religious Pluralism
(From All views respected, to all equally valid, to all equally True)
• Enlightened
We know about other religions, cannot claim exclusive
Most all major religions make exclusive claims. Thus,
Most have to be wrong.
• Humble
Pluralism is based on my ideas or our collective
advancement beyond generations past.
Exclusive claims based on Bible.
• Tolerant
Pluralism claims to be more tolerant.
In fact, It attacks any differing opinion.
ILL – Mere Christianity originally radio broadcasts in 1940’s
What Christians Believe, Chapter 1, rival conceptions of God
Some believe no true/false; no right/wrong…
The Christian Replies, “ Don’t Talk Damned Nonsense!”*
• One person complained of the word damned as frivolous swearing. But I mean exactly what I say --- these ideas are nonsense, under God’s curse, and will lead those who believe it to eternal death!
App – We make exclusive Claims to Truth, Claims about God.
Alternatives: God does not really exist
God does not care enough to Introduce Himself!
God has Revealed Himself to Us.
So, We do Know Him. LORD, our God, LORD is One.
t/s – We Teach our Children that God has made Himself Known.
• Manners, Hygiene, money…. Not Religion?!
• What we do not teach them, they assume:
1) We do not know much
2) It does not matter much
t/s – 2nd Exclusive Claim…
God Makes Exclusive Claims on Us
Exp – Vs. 5 – Wholly devoted to Our Covenant Partner!
Heart, Soul and Strength. YHWH is to be the sole object of
Our Worship, allegiance and affection.
I love You at the depths of my being, with my whole heart, every fiber of my being, I would lay down my life for you.
Vs. 6-9 = A Life centered on Him.
Double merism = Activity and Time
(referring to the whole by the extremes)
Challenge to Religious Pluralism and Religious Hypocrisy
Religious Hypocrisy =
Declaring Exclusive Claims about God while
ignoring His Exclusive Claims on Us.
ILL – Good teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
“Good?” = Why do you call me good? Only God is Good.
a) Do you think you might be good enough?
b) Do you realize I am indeed God?
Have you kept the commandments? (all of them)
Go sell all you have, give to poor; and come, Follow Me!
• He went away sad, loved money more!
App – Who is Jesus to make such an Exclusive Claim!
Either Jesus is arrogant and Intolerant; or, He IS the One and Only!
Are you living like you know the One and Only God?
