Our HDR rig used to film this is now for sale, to raise money for the next generation! Contact us for details or to submit an offer.

This video highlights several clips we've made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, e.g., one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above.
HDR Video provides filmmakers with many exciting new opportunities. Not only can HDR video create interesting effects, it can also allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical. For example, when a subject is backlit, one camera could be set to properly expose the subject, the other the sky, resulting in video with perfect exposure throughout.
We will continue to develop and improve the HDR video process for better results and efficiency. For more information, check out our website

I Need Nothing - a nearly useless odyssey
Repositories of stories and its enriching emotions, the covers, that accomodate the existing panoply of musical genres, are the motto for this exibition. The focus is made on album covers that often conquer our memory even when music slightly reached our ears. Major graphic disasters or deified, unduly ignored or zeitgeists, covers provide listening with a touch and an image, with the act of collection and share. From cover to cover, going thru all the stories (and histories), we wrote a new one to the sound of a song that repeats: I need nothing, I’ve everything I need.
‘I need nothing’ is an original concept from Cãoceito + Burdman, shot by Moopie. Its premier happens as a tangential project of EXD’11.
‘Useless’ - the motto of biennial’s current edition - was the kick-off, and the thought on how album covers (vinyls, in this case) enable people to ‘listen with the eyes’ the main goal of the project. At a time where digital audio files dominate but where traditional mediums still seduce fans, the album covers, being useless for some, stay relevant for others.
In this odyssey we benefited from the help of a set of people which, directly or not, live by the rhythm of the music they buy, download, share or create. The Parenthetical Girls lent music (Doughnut) to the video; Moopie shot the video; Matéria Prima yielded the venue in Lisbon; designers/illustrators/artists - Ariana Couvinha, Carla Almeida, Daniel Marques, Diogo Carvalho, Júlio Dolbeth, Hugo Oliveira, Manuel F. Sousa, Mariana Fernandes, Miguel Feraso Cabral, Miguel Vale, Nuno Aguiar, Paulo Lourenço, Paulo Serra, Pedro Naves, Rodrigo Burdman, Rui Vitorino Santos e Samir Mesquita - provided the bulk of over 200 covers, which populate the video and embody the central element of the project, and yet all others who enriched the discussion with surprising texts.

THIS IS ERIC KOSTON
Desillusion magazine, supported by Nike are proud to present their latest video “This is Eric Koston”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Legendary street skateboarder, Eric Koston.
As one traces the evolution of modern street skating from its earliest foundation to the unbelievable heights to which it has risen, Eric Koston has served as a constant innovator each step of the way. Since turning pro in 1992, Eric Koston has remained unfadeable in a cut-throat contest capacity as well as on the raw street level that prides itself in taking no shorts, all while never seeming to take any of it all that seriously. The wheels are always in motion, even when off his board, as Koston has helped advance innovation in skateboarding through his dedicated approach to footwear design (his creativity has yielded several classic skate shoes already) and by co-founding The Berrics with long-time pal and former roommate, Steve Berra.
After the great success of “This is” a serie of short movie portraying Icon of counter culture like Trevor “Trouble” Andrew (vimeo.com/36407056), Andrew Reynolds (vimeo.com/39201565 ), Ozzie Wright (vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisozzie ), Dylan Rieder vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisdylan), Peter Line ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisPeter ), Alex Knost ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisAlex ) ; Desillusion Magazine is proud to present THIS IS ERIC KOSTON, a dedication to one of their most influential inspirations in the board culture scene.
The video comes with a full report on Eric Koston on the latest issue of Desillusion magazine available on dslmag.com/v5/shop.php

Compressed 03
Compressed 03 continues my interest in telling stories through analog visual effects - everything in the film was made with physical materials and tools in my studio. By using frame by frame stop motion and time lapse techniques, fluid dynamics and magnetism are transformed into majestic explosions and seething storms.
Sounds best on headphones, and looks best fullscreen!
Shot with Nikon D90, macro lens & custom built timer / trigger
Edited in Adobe Premiere
Scored in Ableton Live

Compressed 03 Process
I find analog things appealing - whether it's vinyl or photographic film, there's a certain richness and magic that's difficult to replicate with digital means. The Compressed series showcases analog visual effect techniques, so everything in the films is made by hand, with physical materials and tools in my studio. For each of the Compressed films I try to develop and master a set of analog techniques with which I can craft a narrative.
For the effects in Compressed 03, I was drawn to the dynamic interactions between liquids. I spent about a month playing mad scientist to see what gave the most interesting results. I raided the kitchen for common stuff like milk, oil, and molasses. I stopped at the drug store and buy random things such as witch hazel, nail polish, and bubble blowing mix. I ordered exotic stuff like ferrofluid online. Some liquids repelled each other, some caused coagulation, and some created intricate patterns.
I settled on ferrofluid as my primary liquid, since it yielded some nice interactions with other liquids and could be manipulated using magnetism. All of the black or brown seen in the film is ferrofluid - needless to say it was a very messy few months!
The whole film is shot with a Nikon D90 DSLR, frame by frame, and animated using stop motion and time lapse techniques. This allowed me to control the effects by manipulating various parameters by hand - for example I could blow air onto the scene with a straw to adjust flow direction, or add liquid outside the shot to accelerate an effect. I also hacked a flatbed scanner so I could control it from my computer - and by physically connecting the scanner carriage to other equipment I could adjust parameters of the scene very precisely.
To control the camera for the frame by frame animation, I used a custom timer that I had built for a previous project.
Except for the opening title sequence, everything was shot with a macro lens. While the scale of the scenes in the film may seem grand, they actually range from the size of a post-it, to the size of a playing card. To work at that small scale I used syringes to dispense minuscule amounts of liquids, as well as a whole assortment of tiny magnets to control the ferrofluid. As anyone who has worked with macro can tell you, it's a pain to work with, but it opened up a whole world of visual opportunities for the project.
Once shooting was wrapped, I edited the film with Premiere, while concurrently writing the soundtrack in Ableton Live.
Since I'm kept pretty busy during the day designing software for Adobe, the film was made during my evenings and weekends over the span of about 4 months.
