The Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) condemns the police murder
of seventeen-year-old Nqobile Nzuza. She was shot in the head and
back with sharp ammunition on September 30 as the police cracked
down on Abahlali baseMjondolo’s protest against the ongoing
evictions and demolitions of their homes in Cato Manor, Durban.
Others were wounded and hospitalised. This is the latest tragic
incident in the ongoing struggle for housing and for the right to
protest in Cato Manor, following the assassinations of outspoken
housing activists Thembinkosi Qumbelo (in March) and Nkululeko
Gwala (in June) and the police shooting of Nkosinathi Mngomezulu
two weeks ago. These incidents follow death threats against
Abahlali activists from the clique around local African National
(ANC) councillor Mzimuni Giba, and the Ethekwini Municipality’s
sustained campaign, in defiance of several court orders, of
evictions and demolitions of the shacks that Cato Crest residents
are forced to call home. Under these circumstances; and against the

The Democratic Socialist Movement here publishes an
account by workers at the Toyota Prospecton plant outside Durban.
At the time of writing, Monday September 9, the Prospecton workers
are continuing the strike, still awaiting the NUMSA president’s
promised report-back. The NUMSA leadership has told the workers
that their continued strike action is illegal. More updates to
follow.

workers of Khotso Batho, the ‘Black Economic Empowerment’ labour
broker company which was contracted to Sasol, until it was shut
down recently after massive corruption was exposed. Khotso Batho
Mining Services is owned by Maureen Mofokeng, married to the
CEPPWAWU (Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied
Workers Union) general secretary Simon Mofokeng who also played a
