Bio for this speaker:
Robin Hanson is an associate professor of economics at George Mason University, a research associate at the Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University, and chief scientist at Consensus Point. After receiving his Ph.D. in social science from the California Institute of Technology in 1997, Robin was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation health policy scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1984, Robin received a masters in physics and a masters in the philosophy of science from the University of Chicago, and afterward spent nine years researching artificial intelligence, Bayesian statistics, and hypertext publishing at Lockheed, NASA, and independently.
Robin has over 70 publications, including articles in Applied Optics, Business Week, CATO Journal, Communications of the ACM, Economics Letters, Econometrica, Economics of Governance, Extropy, Forbes, Foundations of Physics, IEEE Intelligent Systems, Information Systems Frontiers, Innovations, International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Evolution and Technology, Journal of Law Economics and Policy, Journal of Political Philosophy, Journal of Prediction Markets, Journal of Public Economics, Medical Hypotheses, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Public Choice, Social Epistemology, Social Philosophy and Policy, Theory and Decision, and Wired.
Robin has pioneered prediction markets, also known as information markets or idea futures, since 1988. He was the first to write in detail about people creating and subsidizing markets in order to gain better estimates on those topics. Robin was a principal architect of the first internal corporate markets, at Xanadu in 1990, of the first web markets, the Foresight Exchange since 1994, and of DARPA's Policy Analysis Market, from 2001 to 2003. Robin has developed new technologies for conditional, combinatorial, and intermediated trading, and has studied insider trading, manipulation, and other foul play. Robin has written and spoken widely on the application of idea futures to business and policy, being mentioned in over one hundered press articles on the subject, and advising many ventures, including GuessNow, Newsfutures, Particle Financial, Prophet Street, Trilogy Advisors, XPree, YooNew, and undisclosable defense research projects. He is now chief scientist at Consensus Point.
Robin has diverse research interests, with papers on spatial product competition, health incentive contracts, group insurance, product bans, evolutionary psychology and bioethics of health care, voter information incentives, incentives to fake expertise, Bayesian classification, agreeing to disagree, self-deception in disagreement, probability elicitation, wiretaps, image reconstruction, the history of science prizes, reversible computation, the origin of life, the survival of humanity, very long term economic growth, growth given machine intelligence, and interstellar colonization.

Built For Conversation: The Interaction Design of Social Media
"Built For Conversation: The Interaction Design of Social Media Networks"
Social Media Networks, because they are built on the collective participation of individuals, can only be effectively guided by means of a researched and learned examination of social psychology. It is the interaction designer's job to understand how social media ecosystems are likely to evolve, given the interaction of the application constraints with users -- each of which with their own goals, prejudices, social ties, needs for sociality and irrational decision-making.
Design choices affecting application design, functions, and features can only steer individual and aggregate participation within the social network. This talk will begin with the basics of social psychology as it pertains to social media and networking sites and give a brief overview of identity creation in the context of social networking theory.
We will discuss design patterns in social media site architecture and their impact on human behavior, and why interaction designers engaged in building social networking ecosystems must leverage sociology, social network analysis, and behavioral economics to ensure their social media site is Built for Conversation. Time permitting I will discuss two case studies - why social media/networking functionality failed on Kayak.com, and why it succeeded on Gather.com -- lessons learned the hard way.

TRITTICO - Human Installations II III I
PERFORMANCE ART BY KYRAHM
The work merges my Human Installations in a single performance of strong visual impact. It is inspired by José Saramago: "Like all young men the son of Joseph and Mary was born in his mother’s dirt and blood, in the sticky mucus, suffering in silence". My encounter with the american artist Ron Athey was essencial to the creation of this work. Extreme body art and Christian iconography (here a real crucifixion takes place using body suspension and needles are used to provoke tears of blood), the transition from woman to man, the naked bodies and the nuances of gender (women, men and transgender) allowes parallels between the human and the devine self determination (the Word becomes flesh, God becames man). The work combines the concepts of Judith Butler’s queer theory and Stelarc's considerations on body. "Kyrahm and Julius are Captain Achab of the new body trans-oceanic frontier of existence, able to stop and recreate the world, where poetry becomes the human sacrifice that yields itself (by choice) and suffers (in spite of it) - Marco Fioramanti.

- Arte Laguna Prize - Venice

Halo Films Choice Point Showreel
“Choice Point” is a feature-length documentary film exploring the world of personal, transformational change. It considers how when one person makes small positive changes to their life, they can have a direct and positive impact on others. Ultimately, it shows how what we do impacts on others and that by changing our own lives for the better we can, in many ways change the world.
Choice Point founder, Harry Massey, came to Halo Films with his concept and vision of the Choice Point film. As part of the wider Choice Point Movement the film is supported by many public figures, includes a book release, a magazine and is the driving force behind a philanthropic social fund.
Substantial amounts of footage had been shot prior to Choice Point coming to Halo, and all on the Canon EOS5D Digital SLR. Traditionally a stills camera with interchangeable lenses, its movie mode has been developed to produce fantastic film-like quality footage. Halo’s brief was to pick up the existing footage and drive the film forward, working to a very tight timescale, and ultimately for worldwide DVD, Blue-Ray and social network release.
Stepping into the 5D world was a new venture for the creative team at Halo. Very few long form documentaries have yet been made on the 5D and we have had to overcome many various technical challenges difficulties in the new technology – not least the process of syncing separately recorded sound with that from a camera not primarily designed for shooting video. Shooting at Halo has traditionally used HDV formats on cameras such as the Sony EX1 and EX3. Moving to the 5D meant being able to exploit the stills capacity of the large chip lenses used in stills photography, to create a much shallower depth of field, and consequently a far more cinematic look that harks back to the days of 35mm film. Our shoots adopted a more dramatic, considered approach to our subjects and contributors, and thanks to the need to record separate sound, involved film-like disciplines such as marking scenes using a clapperboard.
Creatively, it has been immense fun and has given us the opportunity to work with some highly skilled people in the 5D world. The Halo team grew larger as Producers, Editors and Graphic Designers joined the fold to help produce Choice Point.
We tell the stories of inspirational people who have all made choices in their lives. Jodi Orton, a former senior paralegal from New Jersey, left the legal world to move into fostering and adoption. Jodi and her husband Bret, now based in Warsaw, Missouri, have fostered around 100 children, many of whom have inherent behavioural and emotional disorders. The Halo team went to the States to film with them over 5 days in October 2011. In addition we have filmed many great visionaries and thinkers about their personal stories of transformation, and have also had the enormous privilege of filming recognised global philanthropic figures such as Sir Richard Branson, Jean Paul DeJoria, (co-founder of Paul Mitchell Haircare), and Bill Drayton, founder of the Ashoka organisation in the U.S.
We also turned our Halo home into a studio, filming macro shots of oil dispersing in water, which will appear in the film as distant, far flung galaxies…
The film will be launched in Spring 2012 and will become the backbone of the Choice Point Movement.
Choice Point provides a scientific, self-help and human story platform to help people transform their lives for the better while at the same time showing them how to contribute to transforming the world in beneficial ways. Its mission is to make an impact at the individual level, which will in turn help to transform the world at a global level. It is based on the theory that by aligning with purpose, we each can help to bring the world into better alignment for a positive, peaceful future in which we can more easily solve the problems that currently beset the world
