Environmental conservation and local economic development in Mbeya District/ Tanzania (Swahili)
National Environment Management (NEMC) / United Nations in Tanzania
Tanzania's rich natural resources are fundamental for the country's growth and economic development. However, the under utilization of the potential of the environment and natural resources to the economy and people's livelihoods contributes to Tanzania standing as one of world's poorest countries.
PEI initiated the country programme in 2003 to support the government in addressing these issues and promoting sustainable development. The PEI Tanzania programme focuses on developing capabilities of key national institutions in designing and implementing pro-poor economic growth interventions and sustainable development.Thereby the country programme is contributing to national development plans (NDPs and UNDAP 2011 -2015) as well and the achievement of the overall PEI Programme outputs.
PEI Tanzania is jointly led by the President's Office Planning Commission. In addition various sector ministries such as Finance, Regional Administration and Local Government, National Bureau of Statistics and Vice President's Office--Division of Environmentare involved in the project implementation. PEI Tanzania is also closely collaborating with the University of Dar es Salaam and with the UNDP CO and is part of the One-UN processes under the UNRC.

KILIMANJARO, TANZANIA
Located on the Eastern coast of Africa, Tanzania is known for being home to iconic landmarks such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park. Tanzania’s economy relies primarily on agriculture, and 76% of the population lives in rural areas. Because of its reliance on farming and lack of infrastructure, Tanzania is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters such as drought, floods, earthquakes and epidemics.

Prayercast | Tanzania
The Republic of Tanzania on the east coast of Africa has a strong sense of nationalism that has enabled its people to live peacefully for over 20 years. Historical and cultural factors, the dominant Swahili language, and a successful political plan for independence have contributed to its stability. Bordered by eight countries including Kenya to the north and Mozambique to the south, Tanzania has the highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and it shares three of Africa’s largest lakes. The abundant wildlife in the Serengeti attracts many tourists as well. The “spice islands” of the Zanzibar archipelago off the eastern coast brought a strong Arabic influence to Tanzania as the republic was formed in 1964.
Attempts to socialize the mostly agricultural economy after independence met with little success. With 80% of the workforce in farming and 85% of Tanzania’s exports from agriculture, the economy suffered, and over one-third of the population now lives below the poverty line. Tanzania has one of the smallest industrial sectors in Africa with aging transportation, communication, and power infrastructures inhibiting growth as well. HIV/AIDS and an influx of refugees fleeing conflicts in neighboring countries have both negatively impacted the economy. Recovery is slow, but revenues continue to grow from gold mining and tourists visiting Tanzania’s beautiful natural attractions.
Religious freedom is thought to be one of the motivating factors in Tanzania’s peaceful history. With over one half of the population Christian and one third Muslim (99 % in Zanzibar), actively religious communities have existed with little conflict. This is changing with increased internal Muslim conflicts, which have also prompted conflicts with Christians. Witchcraft, the occult, and superstitious spiritual practices are becoming part of even the mainline religions. Many churches lack trained mature leaders to shepherd and teach sound Biblical truths to established and newly planted Christian communities to expose syncretism and heresy.

Zanzibar- The Dark Side of Paradise
Zanzibar – The Dark Side of Paradise is a twenty minute news documentary which looks at the causes and consequences of the longest blackout in history. The film assesses how unremitting power problems in the Spice Islands are putting their fragile economy at great risk, whilst also denying their impoverished population a safe water supply. It also provides a background of Zanzibar’s current political situation and their dependence on tourism in order to illustrate why the power cuts are only serving to aggravate an already dire situation.
The film was made as part of my MA in International Journalism, and as it’s my first documentary any feedback would be much appreciated!

GCS: Episode 1 - Global Cycle Solutions - Transforming the Bicycle into a Vehicle of Innovation in Tanzania
http://www.YoungWorldInventors.com - Global Cycle Solutions is an MIT team founded and led by Jodie Wu, a 2009 mechanical engineering graduate of MIT. A Chinese-American who hails from Georgia, Jodie went to Tanzania two summers ago. There, she met Bernard Kiwia, a Tanzanian inventor and bike mechanic from Arusha, near Mt. Kilamanjaro, and was inspired to create a pedal-powered corn sheller. Jodie returned from Tanzania as a Baker Foundation Fellow at MIT's Public Service Center, where she worked with students to carry out her ideas, and quickly realized its potential. Thus, she founded GCS, which quickly won the Development Track and Audience Choice Awards of the MIT $100K Business Plan Competition.
Although offered a full scholarship to study mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley's graduate school, Jodie has spent the past year working full-time in Tanzania, and plans to stay there, turning GCS into a reality. Bernard Kiwia gave a workshop at MIT in April showing a dozen inventions he made after he was inspired by IDDS, an invention symposium he went to with Jodie, with inventors from around the world. The growing GCS team are, in their own words, "transforming the bicycle into a vehicle of innovation." Together Jodie, Bernard their teams in Tanzania and the U.S. have invented a corn sheller and a cell phone charger, both powered by bicycles. After winning prestigious prizes in the U.S. (the Lemelson MIT prize for Social Entrepreneurship) and Tanzania (Nane Nane Agricultural Fair in Arusha), the pressure is on to develop markets and supply chains with a local Tanzanian team. They face drought, fabrication snafus and team building issues. Thus, the cycle of invention powers innovation, and collaboration empowers both local creativity and economies.
Our video series documenting GCS will detail the failures and successes of the team and will chart their learning curve for creative revision, fabrication, and building supply chains and fluid investor relations. Small successes keep the team's eyes on a global prize: doubling the incomes of small rural farmers.
