Kiddus I (born Frank Dowding in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, December 1944) is a reggae singer and musician, best known for his appearance in the film Rockers.
Dowding was born in 1944, his mother a potter and his father a bookkeeper. He adopted the stage name Kiddus, which is Amharic for "blessed one", after becoming a Rastafarian. In 1971, he set up a Rastafarian commune and craft centre located between uptown and downtown Kingston, which became a unique feature of a city generally divided by social class. Dowding was a member of Ras Michael's Sons Of Negus from 1971 to 1978, singing and playing funde drums. He recorded several self-productions in 1972 with Aston Barrett at Joe Gibbs' studio, but these were not released due to lack of funds. Rockers director Theodoros Bafaloukos had seen Kiddus recording "Graduation In Zion" in 1976, two years before the film was made, and decided to film Kiddus recording the track as part of the movie.
Kiddus had by then released a few singles on his own Shepherd label, including "Security In The Streets" which was recorded with Lee Perry at his Black Ark studio. Dowding was a prominent member of the Peace Movement, and "Security in the Streets" was one of the first of several songs recorded in appreciation of the Peace Treaty of 1978 between rival political gang-leaders Claudie Massop and Bucky Marshall.

This 12 minute version of 'Give I Strength' is different from the one previously appearing on the album 'Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1979' (DSR-LP-001). Kiddus I recorded the song for his debut album 'Jah Power, Jah Glory' but it remained unreleased. The most of recordings he did at this time were very long and Kiddus I recalls this was possible because he used to 'treat' those musicians in a hospitable manner. This allowed musicians to be very improvisational in their playing on songs written by Kiddus I. The B-side version has an instrumental to the A-side.

After words we head over to Ina Di Yard , Earl Chinna Smith's place.. and meet his daughter, dab up the back yard and enjoy some tunes..Give thanks for this day of days.. See you next year :) -

Good Vibes: 1978-1984 Roots & Culture selection
Pulling out some 10s and 12s, including plenty of reissues of rarities and previously unreleased dubplates, recordings spanning from about 1978 to 1984. First up two Lee Perry productions, sounds of justice coming from Kiddus I followed by a great George Faith cut, both fantastic examples of the last highest-height days at the Black Ark. Following on nicely is Good Vibes, a state-side rarity from Wackies - should've played the dub too, but rushed to get two killer Channel One's on, the previously unreleased Love and Understanding on the Mr. Bassie rhythm, and a tune I just can't get enough of, Can't Stop Righteousness by the Gladiators - love the message on that one. Moving on from there into four firing tunes: first the previously unreleased dubplate mix of Jughead, UK roots at its best... -

Pulling out some 10s and 12s, including plenty of reissues of rarities and previously unreleased dubplates, recordings spanning from about 1978 to 1984.

Pulling out some 10s and 12s, including plenty of reissues of rarities and previously unreleased dubplates, recordings spanning from about 1978 to 1984.
First up two Lee Perry productions, sounds of justice coming from Kiddus I followed by a great George Faith cut, both fantastic examples of the last highest-height days at the Black Ark. Following on nicely is Good Vibes, a state-side rarity from Wackies - should've played the dub too, but rushed to get two killer Channel One's on, the previously unreleased Love and Understanding on the Mr. Bassie rhythm, and a tune I just can't get enough of, Can't Stop Righteousness by the Gladiators - love the message on that one.
Moving on from there into four firing tunes: first the previously unreleased dubplate mix of Jughead, UK roots at its best, next the deep dub mix of an exceptional Augustus Pablo track, storming in next the previously unreleased Tubby dubplate mix of Leggo Jah Jah Children, followed by what i think is one of the most powerful of all roots tunes, Al Campbell's Jah Love, great vocal cut first, blazing Scientist mix following, and an eye watering Tubbys mix to finish.
80s twelves up next, the heavy Flabba Holt production Warmonger followed by a track I've been after for a while, Confusion, Horace Andy never sounding better in my opinion - unbeatable music. The Lacksley Castell track Government Man was reworked a few times in recent years but this is the mighty original, and winding up the selection on an uplifting note is Mikey Dread's Break Down the Walls followed with some version excursioning on the Rougher Yet rhythm with the Roots Radics.

Jack Ruby:
Lawrence Lindo (died April 1989), better known as Jack Ruby, was a Jamaican record producer and sound system operator, best known for his 1970s productions of artists such as Burning Spear.
Ruby was based in Ocho Rios and during his time was the only major Jamaican record producer not headquartered in Kingston. He ran the Jack Ruby Hi Fi sound system and is considered one of the best roots reggae producers of the 1970s, having established a distinctive sound, [1] noted for the unique use of horn arrangements.[2] Ruby produced Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey and Man in the Hills albums, both of which were licenced to Island Records, establishing Spear as an international success.[1] Other artists that he produced include Justin Hinds (Just in Time/Jezebel),[3] The Gaylads, The Heptones, and Big Youth.[1]
Ruby appeared as himself in the film Rockers, which also features Kiddus I recording "Graduation in Zion" in Ruby's studio.[4]
In the 1980s he suffered from ill-health and his productions were less regular, although he produced the debut album by Foundation in 1988.[5] He died in 1989.[2]
His son, who works under the name Jack Ruby Jr. is a deejay who has worked with The Toasters,[6] and his grandson is the popular singer Sean Kingston.[7][8]

Jack Ruby:
Lawrence Lindo (died April 1989), better known as Jack Ruby, was a Jamaican record producer and sound system operator, best known for his 1970s productions of artists such as Burning Spear.
Ruby was based in Ocho Rios and during his time was the only major Jamaican record producer not headquartered in Kingston. He ran the Jack Ruby Hi Fi sound system and is considered one of the best roots reggae producers of the 1970s, having established a distinctive sound, [1] noted for the unique use of horn arrangements.[2] Ruby produced Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey and Man in the Hills albums, both of which were licenced to Island Records, establishing Spear as an international success.[1] Other artists that he produced include Justin Hinds (Just in Time/Jezebel),[3] The Gaylads, The Heptones, and Big Youth.[1]
Ruby appeared as himself in the film Rockers, which also features Kiddus I recording "Graduation in Zion" in Ruby's studio.[4]
In the 1980s he suffered from ill-health and his productions were less regular, although he produced the debut album by Foundation in 1988.[5] He died in 1989.[2]
His son, who works under the name Jack Ruby Jr. is a deejay who has worked with The Toasters,[6] and his grandson is the popular singer Sean Kingston.[7][8]

KIDDUS I - GRADUATION IN ZION.wmv
Kiddus I (born Frank Dowding in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, December 1944) is a reggae singer and musician, best known for his appearance in the film Rockers. Dowding was born in 1944, his mother a potter and his father a bookkeeper. He adopted the stage name Kiddus, which is Amharic for "blessed one", after becoming a Rastafarian. In 1971, he set up a Rastafarian commune and craft centre located between uptown and downtown Kingston, which became a unique feature of a city generally divided by social class. Dowding was a member of Ras Michael's Sons Of Negus from 1971 to 1978, singing and playing funde drums. Another lost piece found from the time when Root Rock Reggae was in its heyday.

Kiddus I (born Frank Dowding in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, December 1944) is a reggae singer and musician, best known for his appearance in the film Rockers.
Dowding was born in 1944, his mother a potter and his father a bookkeeper. He adopted the stage name Kiddus, which is Amharic for "blessed one", after becoming a Rastafarian. In 1971, he set up a Rastafarian commune and craft centre located between uptown and downtown Kingston, which became a unique feature of a city generally divided by social class. Dowding was a member of Ras Michael's Sons Of Negus from 1971 to 1978, singing and playing funde drums. He recorded several self-productions in 1972 with Aston Barrett at Joe Gibbs' studio, but these were not released due to lack of funds. Rockers director Theodoros Bafaloukos had seen Kiddus recording "Graduation In Zion" in 1976, two years before the film was made, and decided to film Kiddus recording the track as part of the movie. Kiddus had by then released a few singles on his own Shepherd label, including "Security In The Streets" which was recorded with Lee Perry at his Black Ark studio. Dowding was a prominent member of the Peace Movement, and "Security in the Streets" was one of the first of several songs recorded in appreciation of the Peace Treaty of 1978 between rival political gang-leaders Claudie Massop and Bucky Marshall.
After releasing a handful of further singles, and recording an album that was not released due to the master tapes getting lost, little was heard of Kiddus I until French label Makasound issued Inna De Yard in 2005, one of a series of albums recorded acoustically by vintage reggae artists in Jamaica. Japanese label Dub Store Records then reissued some of the 1970s singles, followed by the anthology Graduation In Zion: 1978-1980 in 2007. In June 2009, Kiddus I released Green Fa Life (Naya Records), remarkably his first full length electric instrumentation album of his 30+ year career. Green Fa Life sees Kiddus I team up with roots reggae legends Earl "Chinna" Smith and Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, although that is naming just a few of the very respected heavy weight artists who also play on the album. Kiddus I also appears on the first two "Grass Yard Productions" albums [Naya Records] released 2009 with the tracks "Merry Chase" and "Shine Your Light". Both Grass Yard Productions: Vol1 & Vol2 has Kiddus I sharing studio time with other stella Jamaican musicians such as Ken Bob, Johnny "Dizzy" Moore, Jamel, Don I, Ken Boothe, Israel Voice, Jahmali and Michh "Shemaiah" Abrahams.
In 2007, a copy of his album tapes from 1981 were discovered, and his debut album was finally released in 2009 as Rocking Rebel Volumes 1&2.
