Mumias Sugar Ethanol Plant
Mumias Sugar Company has signed a 1.6 billion shilling loan agreement with Ecobank to fund the construction of an ethanol plant. The project which should be operational in the next two years will cost an estimated 3.6 billion shillings with the company raising over 2 billion shillings from its own internal operations. Busia farmers in land tussle with Mumias Sugar
www.ntv.co.ke Sugar-cane farmers from the county of Busia are calling on the government to halt any operations on the land on which Busia Sugar Company lies until investigations on its sale are done. The farmers presented a petition to the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate alleged corruption in the sale by Mumias Sugar Company. The land was bought and set aside for a sugar factory to be built but the farmers are not content with the progress 5 years on.

Fire destroys Mumias Sugar processing plant
www.ntv.co.ke A fire at the Mumias Sugar Company in Kakamega has destroyed property of unknown value. The fire that is believed to have broken out at around 5 pm last evening destroyed some sections of the sugar-processing unit. The company's acting Managing Director Steven Olieta, says the fire is believed to have started from one of the stores used to keep "BAGAS", the fuel used to process the sugar. The fire was however put out following response by workers and the municipal council of Kakamega.

Mumias Sugar Expansion
Mumias Sugar Company has expressed its interest to acquire some of the 5 state owned sugar factories once they are put up for sale. The company which also intends to set up another factory in the Tana delta is eyeing at least two of the factories located in the western sugar belt as it seeks to expand and diversify its operations to boost its revenue streams. Mumias is banking on a new international credit rating of a+ to access cheaper credit to fund the new projects.

Fire at Mumias Sugar
A mysterious fire whose cause is yet to established burnt down a sugar store at Mumias Sugar company destroying bagasse which the company uses as fuel. The fire however did not affect operations at the mill and company officials termed the damage as minimal. The fire took more than five hours to be contained as reinforcement of fire fighters had to be called from Kakamega and Bungoma. Operations at the bagasse store were put on hold at the time of the fire as maintenance was going on in the plant. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

The firms director in charge of agriculture Moses Nyongesa speaking to KTN business today indicated the company was loosing an estimated one thousand tones of its developed cane daily to rival firms. Over the last two months, Nyongesa added, the situation saw them register reduced production at about 10 per cent due to poaching.

Case against Mumias Sugar MD fails to take off
www.ntv.co.ke A case against Mumias Sugar managing director Evans Kidero over the controversial acquisition of land belonging to Busia Sugar Company has failed to take off. Human rights activist Okoiti Omtatah, Nambale MP Chris Okemo and former Attorney General Amos Wako who are suing Kidero were in court but the presiding magistrate failed to appear. The magistrate is said to have been attending a judicial function. The court is now expected to set a new date for the case. The three claim that Kidero illegally sold public land belonging to Busia Sugar Company to recover a 100 million shillings debt owed to Mumias Sugar.

Mumias which is the leading sugar producer in the country accounting for 60% of production intends to roll out the creation of an ethanol producing plant after it received approval from its shareholders in its annual general meeting. www.ntv.co.ke Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has agreed to raise the price of power it purchases from Mumias Sugar Company, the sugar-mills Managing director Evans Kidero has said. Kidero says having satisfactorily met tests set by the power utility, all is set for Mumias to sell every Kilowatt hour at 6 shillings and 20 cents up from 4 shillings and 50 cents per Kilowatt Hour. In the recently announced results, Mumias Sugar made 118 million shillings from its co-generation activities. In total, Mumias profits for the half-year went up to 1.5 billion shillings from 231 million shillings last year.

Kenyas largest sugar producer Mumias Sugar Company will soon be venturing into ethanol production. Managing Director Evans Kidero told a gathering of investors that the company was all set for the new project which will diversify the companys revenue streams. Mumias has already set aside 3 billion shillings to kick off the project which should be ready by October next year. The tendering process for the distillery which will produce 22 million litres of ethanol annually is already underway.
