Lesson 1 : Basic Writing & Reading - Middle Consonants
Learn Thai By Kru Geaw
Module 1 - Lesson 1 : Basic Writing & Reading
Thai alphabets consist of 44 letters, 32 vowels, 4 tone marks and various other symbols for punctuations, numbers and etc. Each consonant belongs to one of the three different classes.
Middle Consonants (อักษรกลาง ahk-sawn-glahng)
**Note**
1. Each letter has its own name for example Gaw Gai (Chicken), Daw Dek (Child).
This make the sound of the letter, plus "aw;" for example, "gaw gai." The letter
makes the sound "g," and that character is the one used when spelling the word,
"gai," which means "chicken". All consonants are pronounced by putting /aw/ after
the sound which they represent.
2. Every Thai syllable starts with a consonant (even if the consonant is a silent อ).
Although the consonant sounds come first, the vowel may be written before, above,
below, after or around the consonant depending on the vowel.
3. (อ) This letter is a consonant, a sound of a vowel, and a part of vowel combination.
4. There are 32 vowels. Vowels sounds are written by using a mixture of vowel symbols.
Most of them are in pairs of short and long sounds. A dash (-) indicates the position
of the initial consonant after the vowel is pronounced.
