Philip (son of Alcimachus of Apollonia)
Philip (Greek: ฮฆฮฏฮปฮนฯฯฮฟฯ, flourished 4th century BC) was a Greek nobleman who was a Macedonian Thessalian and his fatherโs first youngest brother (one of Philipโs paternal uncles) was Lysimachus one of the Diadochi of Alexander the Great.
Philip was a son born to Alcimachus of Apollonia by unnamed Greek woman and had a brother also called Alcimachus. His known grandparent was his paternal grandfather Agathocles. Philipโs father served as an official, and as an active diplomat and administrator in the latter reign of King Philip II of Macedon who reigned 359 BCโ336 BC and the first years of his son, King Alexander the Great reigned 336 BCโ323 BC. Philip was named in honor of his paternal late uncle Philip, a soldier who died in the service of Alexander the Great.
Philip like his brother, appears to have been born and raised in Apollonia and is known from surviving inscriptional evidence. In a surviving inscription he is mentioned as Philip son of Alcimachus and little is known on him.

Philip (satrap)
Philip (in Greek ฮฆฮนฮปฮนฯฯoฯ; died 318 BC) was satrap of Sogdiana, to which government he was first appointed by Alexander the Great himself in 327 BC. He retained his post, as did most of the satraps of the more remote provinces, in the arrangements which followed the death of the king (323 BC); but in the subsequent partition at Triparadisus, 321 BC, he was assigned the government of Parthia instead. Here he remained until 318 BC, when Peithon, who was then seeking to establish his power over all the provinces of the East, made himself master of Parthia, and put Philip to death.

Philip (in Greek ฮฆฮนฮปฮนฯฯoฯ; died 306 BC), son of Antigonus, king of Asia, was sent by his father in 310 BC, at the head of an army, to oppose the revolt of his general Phoenix, and to recover possession of the towns on the Hellespont held by the latter. He died in 306 BC, just as Antigonus was setting out for his expedition against Egypt.

The Achaemenid Persians took Syria from Babylonia as part of their hegemony of Southwest Asia in 539 BC. The Persians, having spent four centuries under Assyrian rule, retained Imperial Aramaic as the language of the Achaemenid Empire (539 BC- 33O BC), and also the Assyrian name of the satrapy of Aram/Syria Eber-Nari. Syria was conquered by the Greek Macedonian Empire, ruled by Alexander the Great circa 330 BC, and consequently became Coele-Syria province of the Greek Seleucid Empire (323 BC โ 64 BC). The Persians, having spent four centuries under Assyrian rule, retained Imperial Aramaic as the language of the Achaemenid Empire (539 BC- 33O BC), and also the Assyrian name of the satrapy of Aram/Syria Eber-Nari.
Syria was conquered by the Greek Macedonian Empire, ruled by Alexander the Great circa 330 BC, and consequently became Coele-Syria province of the Greek Seleucid Empire (323 BC โ 64 BC).
It was the Greeks who introduced the name "Syria" to the region. Originally an Indo-European corruption of "Assyria" in northern Mesopotamia, the Greeks used this term not only to describe Assyria itself but the lands to the west which had for centuries been under Assyrian dominion. Thus in the Greco-Roman world both the Arameans of Syria and the Assyrians of Mesopotamia to the east were referred to as "Syrians" or "Syriacs", despite these being distinct peoples in their own right, a confusion which would continue into the modern world.
Palmyra, a rich and sometimes powerful native Aramaic speaking kingdom arose in northern Syria in the 4th century BC, independent of the Greeks. Eventually parts of southern Seleucid Syria were taken by Judean Hasmoneans upon the slow disintegration of the Hellenistic Empire.
Syria briefly came under Armenian control from 83 BC, with the conquests of Tigranes the Great, who was welcomed as a savior from the Seleucids and Romans by its people. The Armenians retained control of Syria for two decades before being driven out by the Romans.
Pompey the Great of the Roman Empire, who captured Antioch in 64 BC, turning Syria into a Roman province. Palmyra again remained largely independent, and in the late 3rd century AD it became the center of the short lived Palmyrene Empire, which briefly conquered Egypt, Syria, Palestine, much of Asia Minor, Judah and Lebanon, before being finally brought under Roman control in 273 AD.
The northern Mesopotamian Assyrian kingdom of Adiabene controlled areas of north east Syria between 10 AD and 117 AD, before it was conquered by Rome.
The Aramaic language has been found as far afield as Hadrians Wall in Ancient Britain, with inscriptions written by Assyrian and Aramean soldiers of the Roman Empire.
Control of Syria eventually passed from the Romans to the Byzantines, with the split in the Roman Empire.
The largely Aramaic speaking population of Syria during the heyday of the Byzantine empire was probably not exceeded again until the 19th century. Prior to the Arab Islamic Conquest in the 7th century AD, the bulk of the population were Arameans, but Syria was also home to Greek and Roman ruling classes, Assyrians still dwelt in the north east, Phoenicians along the coasts, and Jewish and Armenian communities was also extant in major cities, with Nabateans and pre-Islamic Arabs such as the Lakhmids and Ghassanids dwelling in the deserts of southern Syria. Syriac Christianity had taken hold as the major religion, although others still followed Judaism, Mithraism, Manicheanism, Greco-Roman Religion, Canaanite Religion and Mesopotamian Religion. Syria's large and prosperous population made Syria one of the most important of the Roman and Byzantine provinces, particularly during the 2nd and 3rd centuries (AD).
The Roman Emperor Alexander Severus, who was emperor from 222 to 235, was an Aramean from Syria. His cousin Elagabalus, who was emperor from 218 to 222, was also from Syria and his family held hereditary rights to the high priesthood of the Aramean sun god El-Gabal at Emesa (modern Homs) in Syria. Another Roman emperor who was a Syrian was Philip the Arab (Marcus Julius Philippus), emperor from 244 to 249.
Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Saulus of Tarsus, better known as the Apostle Paul, was converted on the Road to Damascus and emerged as a significant figure in the Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys. Alexander's policy of fusion was held in place by his force of personality and power. After his death the initial challenge from some of his men to this policy became to tear at the fabric of Alexander's vision of empire. The marriage between Roxanne and Alexander which took place in 327 BC has continued to be a point of contention among historians. Was it a marriage of love or a political alliance as Plutarch suggested? Such marriages were something Alexander's father had done on a number of occasions. Had it not been for how worried he made the other Successors, or Diadochi, he may well have remained the most powerful of all. And yet it was precisely his power in life that ultimately led to his death, at the age of 81, in the place he spent all his life - in the front line of battle.
As soon as the Partition of Babylon was held, Antigonus went on an expansive spree of war, picking off enemies and annexing lands, one after the other. Accompanied or aided at all times by his son Demetrius, who would won day perhaps even eclipse him, Antigonus soon had all Asia under his dominion. From Macedonian noble to Satrap of Lycaonia to Royal General of Asia to Lord of all Asia.
But naturally with such power came danger, and his competitors, other Diadochi like Seleucus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus, did not like how ambitious Antigonus was getting. He'd already proved his worth in Asia, Egypt, Greece, on land and on sea, and had set his eyes on the rest of the known world.
This video is a sort of documentary of his story, from meteoric start to tragic yet epic downfall, and a look into how his person and deeds laid the foundations of an empire which lasted in Macedon until the Roman Republic conquered it.

It is also unlikely that Alexander would have taken advantage of Roxanne without marriage, another violation of his policies. It follows, therefore, that the marriage was in line with Alexander's policy of uniting the two cultures โ Greek and Persian. Alexander would later insist that many of his commanders take Persian wives (something that would lead to bitter feelings after his death).
Little is known of Roxanne following her marriage until Alexander's death in 323 BC. While some historians indicate she may have travelled with him into India and was at his side in Babylon, the one thing that is agreed upon by all is that she was pregnant at the time of his death. Her next appearance was in Macedonia where she awaited the birth of her son, the future Alexander IV, along with her mother-in-law Olympias. While she waited, the fate of the empire waited with her.
in 324 BC, the Macedonian (Greek) King Alexander the Great arranged about 80 weddings in the Persian city of Susa between the daughters of Persian nobles and Greeks of high office. An astute judge of culture, Alexander regularly acknowledged a conquered peopleโs customs and culture and attempted to show respect and acceptance for their ways in order to better incorporate the new lands into his empire. Of course, Alexander also meant to further Greek culture into conquered lands as well.
Alexander died in 323 BC (only a year later) all his officers promptly divorced their Persian wives! On top of that sorry tale, it is believed Roxana had Stateira and Parysatis both killed upon the death of Alexander. Roxana herself was protected by Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, but died along with her child by Alexander (Alexander IV) in about 310 BC, the victim of poisoning ordered by the then current King of Macedon, Cassander.

[7.4.4] Then he also celebrated weddings at Susa, both his own and those of his Companions. He himself married Barsine,note the eldest of Darius' daughters, and, according to Aristobulus, another girl as well, Parysatis, the youngest of the daughters of Ochus.note He had already married previously Roxane, the daughter of Oxyartes of Bactria.

And as for all the Macedonians who had already married Asian women, Alexander ordered a list of their names to be drawn up; they numbered over 10,000, and Alexander offered them all gifts their wedding.
[7.5.1] He also thought this was a suitable opportunity to settle the debts of the army, and ordered a list of individual debts to be drawn up, with a promise to pay them. At first few put down their names; they feared Alexander was testing them to find out who thought the soldier's pay insufficient and who was living above his means.

Alexander's policy of fusion was held in place by his force of personality and power. After his death the initial challenge from some of his men to this policy became to tear at the fabric of Alexander's vision of empire.
The marriage between Roxanne and Alexander which took place in 327 BC has continued to be a point of contention among historians. Was it a marriage of love or a political alliance as Plutarch suggested? Such marriages were something Alexander's father had done on a number of occasions. It is also unlikely that Alexander would have taken advantage of Roxanne without marriage, another violation of his policies. It follows, therefore, that the marriage was in line with Alexander's policy of uniting the two cultures โ Greek and Persian. Alexander would later insist that many of his commanders take Persian wives (something that would lead to bitter feelings after his death).
Little is known of Roxanne following her marriage until Alexander's death in 323 BC. While some historians indicate she may have travelled with him into India and was at his side in Babylon, the one thing that is agreed upon by all is that she was pregnant at the time of his death. Her next appearance was in Macedonia where she awaited the birth of her son, the future Alexander IV, along with her mother-in-law Olympias. While she waited, the fate of the empire waited with her.
in 324 BC, the Macedonian (Greek) King Alexander the Great arranged about 80 weddings in the Persian city of Susa between the daughters of Persian nobles and Greeks of high office. An astute judge of culture, Alexander regularly acknowledged a conquered peopleโs customs and culture and attempted to show respect and acceptance for their ways in order to better incorporate the new lands into his empire. Of course, Alexander also meant to further Greek culture into conquered lands as well.
Alexander died in 323 BC (only a year later) all his officers promptly divorced their Persian wives! On top of that sorry tale, it is believed Roxana had Stateira and Parysatis both killed upon the death of Alexander. Roxana herself was protected by Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, but died along with her child by Alexander (Alexander IV) in about 310 BC, the victim of poisoning ordered by the then current King of Macedon, Cassander.

Many believed that the boy was going to be a pushover, easy prey for the machinations of his courtiers and for the many belligerent powers of the Greek Peninsula. Philip however proved to be a king in the mold of Pyrrhus and Alexander, spearheading a campaign against the transgressions of the Aetolian League in the so-called Social War (the War of the Allies) while also side-stepping the plots of corrupt advisors.

The Achaemenid Persians took Syria from Babylonia as part of their hegemony of Southwest Asia in 539 BC. The Persians, having spent four centuries under Assyrian rule, retained Imperial Aramaic as the language of the Achaemenid Empire (539 BC- 33O BC), and also the Assyrian name of the satrapy of Aram/Syria Eber-Nari.
Syria was conquered by the Greek Macedonian Empire, ruled by Alexander the Great circa 330 BC, and consequently became Coele-Syria province of the Greek Seleucid Empire (323 BC โ 64 BC).
It was the Greeks who introduced the name "Syria" to the region. Originally an Indo-European corruption of "Assyria" in northern Mesopotamia, the Greeks used this term not only to describe Assyria itself but the lands to the west which had for centuries been under Assyrian dominion. Thus in the Greco-Roman world both the Arameans of Syria and the Assyrians of Mesopotamia to the east were referred to as "Syrians" or "Syriacs", despite these being distinct peoples in their own right, a confusion which would continue into the modern world.
Palmyra, a rich and sometimes powerful native Aramaic speaking kingdom arose in northern Syria in the 4th century BC, independent of the Greeks. Eventually parts of southern Seleucid Syria were taken by Judean Hasmoneans upon the slow disintegration of the Hellenistic Empire.
Syria briefly came under Armenian control from 83 BC, with the conquests of Tigranes the Great, who was welcomed as a savior from the Seleucids and Romans by its people. The Armenians retained control of Syria for two decades before being driven out by the Romans.
Pompey the Great of the Roman Empire, who captured Antioch in 64 BC, turning Syria into a Roman province. Palmyra again remained largely independent, and in the late 3rd century AD it became the center of the short lived Palmyrene Empire, which briefly conquered Egypt, Syria, Palestine, much of Asia Minor, Judah and Lebanon, before being finally brought under Roman control in 273 AD.
The northern Mesopotamian Assyrian kingdom of Adiabene controlled areas of north east Syria between 10 AD and 117 AD, before it was conquered by Rome.
The Aramaic language has been found as far afield as Hadrians Wall in Ancient Britain, with inscriptions written by Assyrian and Aramean soldiers of the Roman Empire.
Control of Syria eventually passed from the Romans to the Byzantines, with the split in the Roman Empire.
The largely Aramaic speaking population of Syria during the heyday of the Byzantine empire was probably not exceeded again until the 19th century. Prior to the Arab Islamic Conquest in the 7th century AD, the bulk of the population were Arameans, but Syria was also home to Greek and Roman ruling classes, Assyrians still dwelt in the north east, Phoenicians along the coasts, and Jewish and Armenian communities was also extant in major cities, with Nabateans and pre-Islamic Arabs such as the Lakhmids and Ghassanids dwelling in the deserts of southern Syria. Syriac Christianity had taken hold as the major religion, although others still followed Judaism, Mithraism, Manicheanism, Greco-Roman Religion, Canaanite Religion and Mesopotamian Religion. Syria's large and prosperous population made Syria one of the most important of the Roman and Byzantine provinces, particularly during the 2nd and 3rd centuries (AD).
The Roman Emperor Alexander Severus, who was emperor from 222 to 235, was an Aramean from Syria. His cousin Elagabalus, who was emperor from 218 to 222, was also from Syria and his family held hereditary rights to the high priesthood of the Aramean sun god El-Gabal at Emesa (modern Homs) in Syria. Another Roman emperor who was a Syrian was Philip the Arab (Marcus Julius Philippus), emperor from 244 to 249.
Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Saulus of Tarsus, better known as the Apostle Paul, was converted on the Road to Damascus and emerged as a significant figure in the Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys. Philip (son of Alcimachus of Apollonia)
Philip (Greek: ฮฆฮฏฮปฮนฯฯฮฟฯ, flourished 4th century BC) was a Greek nobleman who was a Macedonian Thessalian and his fatherโs first youngest brother (one of Philipโs paternal uncles) was Lysimachus one of the Diadochi of Alexander the Great.
Philip was a son born to Alcimachus of Apollonia by unnamed Greek woman and had a brother also called Alcimachus. His known grandparent was his paternal grandfather Agathocles. Philipโs father served as an official, and as an active diplomat and administrator in the latter reign of King Philip II of Macedon who reigned 359 BCโ336 BC and the first years of his son, King Alexander the Great reigned 336 BCโ323 BC. Philip was named in honor of his paternal late uncle Philip, a soldier who died in the service of Alexander the Great.
Philip like his brother, appears to have been born and raised in Apollonia and is known from surviving inscriptional evidence. In a surviving inscription he is mentioned as Philip son of Alcimachus and little is known on him.

In the wake of the legendary conqueror Alexander the Great, his mightiest generals vied for dominance over his empire, the largest the world had ever yet seen. One of these was Antigonus Monophthalmus, the One-Eyed.
His epic tale is one of power and ambition, with more than a touch of hubris. Had it not been for how worried he made the other Successors, or Diadochi, he may well have remained the most powerful of all. And yet it was precisely his power in life that ultimately led to his death, at the age of 81, in the place he spent all his life - in the front line of battle.
As soon as the Partition of Babylon was held, Antigonus went on an expansive spree of war, picking off enemies and annexing lands, one after the other. Accompanied or aided at all times by his son Demetrius, who would won day perhaps even eclipse him, Antigonus soon had all Asia under his dominion. From Macedonian noble to Satrap of Lycaonia to Royal General of Asia to Lord of all Asia.
But naturally with such power came danger, and his competitors, other Diadochi like Seleucus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus, did not like how ambitious Antigonus was getting. He'd already proved his worth in Asia, Egypt, Greece, on land and on sea, and had set his eyes on the rest of the known world.
This video is a sort of documentary of his story, from meteoric start to tragic yet epic downfall, and a look into how his person and deeds laid the foundations of an empire which lasted in Macedon until the Roman Republic conquered it.

The marriage between Roxanne and Alexander which took place in 327 BC has continued to be a point of contention among historians. Was it a marriage of love or a political alliance as Plutarch suggested? Such marriages were something Alexander's father had done on a number of occasions. It is also unlikely that Alexander would have taken advantage of Roxanne without marriage, another violation of his policies. It follows, therefore, that the marriage was in line with Alexander's policy of uniting the two cultures โ Greek and Persian. Alexander would later insist that many of his commanders take Persian wives (something that would lead to bitter feelings after his death).
Little is known of Roxanne following her marriage until Alexander's death in 323 BC. While some historians indicate she may have travelled with him into India and was at his side in Babylon, the one thing that is agreed upon by all is that she was pregnant at the time of his death. Her next appearance was in Macedonia where she awaited the birth of her son, the future Alexander IV, along with her mother-in-law Olympias. While she waited, the fate of the empire waited with her.
in 324 BC, the Macedonian (Greek) King Alexander the Great arranged about 80 weddings in the Persian city of Susa between the daughters of Persian nobles and Greeks of high office. An astute judge of culture, Alexander regularly acknowledged a conquered peopleโs customs and culture and attempted to show respect and acceptance for their ways in order to better incorporate the new lands into his empire. Of course, Alexander also meant to further Greek culture into conquered lands as well.
Alexander died in 323 BC (only a year later) all his officers promptly divorced their Persian wives! On top of that sorry tale, it is believed Roxana had Stateira and Parysatis both killed upon the death of Alexander. Roxana herself was protected by Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, but died along with her child by Alexander (Alexander IV) in about 310 BC, the victim of poisoning ordered by the then current King of Macedon, Cassander.

The Weddings in Susa
[7.4.4] Then he also celebrated weddings at Susa, both his own and those of his Companions. He himself married Barsine,note the eldest of Darius' daughters, and, according to Aristobulus, another girl as well, Parysatis, the youngest of the daughters of Ochus.note He had already married previously Roxane, the daughter of Oxyartes of Bactria.
[7.4.5] He gave Drypetis to Hephaestion, she too a daughter of Darius and a sister of his own wife; his intention was that the children of Hephaestion should be cousins to his own children. To Craterus he gave Amastris daughter of Oxyathres, brother of Darius, and to Perdiccas the daughter of Atropates, satrap of Media.
[7.4.6] To Ptolemy the bodyguard and to Eumenes the royal secretary he gave the daughters of Artabazus, Artacama to one and Artonis to the other. To Nearchus he gave the daughter of Barsine and Mentor, and to Seleucus the daughter of Spitamenes of Bactria.note Similarly he gave to the other Companions the noblest daughters of the Persians and Medes, some eighty in all.
[7.4.7] The marriages were celebrated according to Persian custom. Chairs were placed for the bridegrooms in order, and after the drinks the brides came in and sat down, each by the side of her groom. They took them by the hand and kissed them; the king began the ceremony, for all the weddings took place together. More than any action of Alexander this seemed to show a popular and comradely spirit.
[7.4.8] The bridegrooms after receiving their brides led them away, each to his own home, and to all Alexander gave a dowry. And as for all the Macedonians who had already married Asian women, Alexander ordered a list of their names to be drawn up; they numbered over 10,000, and Alexander offered them all gifts their wedding.
[7.5.1] He also thought this was a suitable opportunity to settle the debts of the army, and ordered a list of individual debts to be drawn up, with a promise to pay them. At first few put down their names; they feared Alexander was testing them to find out who thought the soldier's pay insufficient and who was living above his means.

At only 18 years of age, Philip V was crowned with the diadem following the death of his uncle Antigonus III Doson in 221. Many believed that the boy was going to be a pushover, easy prey for the machinations of his courtiers and for the many belligerent powers of the Greek Peninsula. Philip however proved to be a king in the mold of Pyrrhus and Alexander, spearheading a campaign against the transgressions of the Aetolian League in the so-called Social War (the War of the Allies) while also side-stepping the plots of corrupt advisors.
