Plot
Set in 1980s Taiwan, after the end of military dictatorship, Monga centers around the troubled lives of five boys coming of age together. The narrator of the story, Mosquito, is invited to be a part of the gang after a silly fight over a chicken leg. Mosquito has grown up without a father and has never had any real friends, so after Monk, Dragon and the others take him under their wing, he discovers an irresistible world of friendship and brotherhood. However, Mosquito soon discovers that in this violent world things aren't always what they seem. When a group of mainlanders attempt to take over Monga, the fragile balance over the district's turf is threatened, friendship is tested, and loyalty is questioned.

First off, we learned two things about KFC Indonesia. The first is that they've sprouted all over the east some spinoff of the chain that is similar to McCafe. We're not sure what fried chicken has to do with breakfast or tea time, but it's a thing. In these KFCafes, they've released a cheese donut. Take a glaze donut, cover it in cheese shavings and presto! change-o! you've got it! Sweet plus cheese isn't brand new, but this seemed an interesting choice of breakfast. Meanwhile in Thailand, Dunkin' Donuts has released Black Charcoal Donuts. These jet black pastry rings are made a deep black with edible charcoal and European bamboo (that's a thing?). The donuts themselves are bizarre enough, but on top of this they added a ridiculous ad campaign featuring a light-skinned thai woman in blackface. The backlash of racism has made them take down the campaign. Now... blackface in the US is quite demeaning. BUT, other countries do not have the history of slavery and oppression that is so deeply ingrained in US culture. They do though have different histories of discrimination attached to ethnic groups and skin tone. We don't know as much about Thai culture as we'd like and so we turn to you - do you think this is racist? Is it racist as an American or is it racist from a Thai perspective?
