Young brothers explain Bayes's theorem

These two young fellows are brothers from Palo Alto who've set out to produce a series of videos explaining the technical ideas in my novel Little Brother, and their first installment, explaining Bayes's Theorem, is a very promising start. I'm honored -- and delighted!

This Must Be the 8-Bit Place: Chiptunes Talking Heads

Apmeehan's chiptunes remix of Talking Heads's "This Must Be the Place" escaped from the continuum where there was an NES Stop Making Sense cartridge, and in that reality, I totally got the high score.

This Day in Blogging History: Sandy Profiteers; Coop's Mexico photos; EFF sues Diebold

One year ago today
Energy emergency: Sandy profiteers sell gas, generators at predatory prices on post-apocalypse Craigslist: Gas sales I've found on Craigslist range from $5 to $20 a gallon, but there are probably ads at higher prices. My favorite was the 55-gallon drum of gas for a thousand bucks. Unleaded! Cash only, folks.

Coop's photos of Mexico: Our pal Coop is in the La Carrera Panamericana 2008 car race, and has been taking wonderful photos along the way.

EFF sues Diebold! EFF is suing Diebold on behalf of the Online Policy Group, who are being threatened with a bogus copyright action in retaliation for linking to a website that describes the technical failings of Diebold's voting machines.

Exclusive excerpt from Art Spiegelman's Co-Mix retrospective

This autumn, Drawn and Quarterly released Co-Mix: A Retrospective of Comics, Graphics, and Scraps, a retrospective of the work of Pulitizer-winning comics creator Art "Maus" Spiegelman.

On November 8, New York's Jewish Museum will debut a show based on the book, featuring many of the original pieces collected in its pages. The show will run until March 23, and Spiegelman will give a presentation at the museum on December 5.

The nice folks at Drawn and Quartlerly have supplied us with some of J Hoberman's fascinating critical essay on Spiegelman, which is part of the show and the book; as well as material on Spiegelman's work for Topps (Garbage Pail Kids, etc), and his work on breakdowns. You can see it all after the jump.

Walking Dead Risk

The Walking Dead Survival Edition Risk is a pretty clever adaptation of the traditional Risk game; in addition to changing the board map to the American south, the game adds some pretty serious additional difficulty in the form of a zombie horde that spawns at the start of each turn. The pieces aren't as cool as Walking Dead Monopoly, but on the plus side, you don't have to play Monopoly.

Mouse has the biscuit

Russo-kawaii overload: a tiny, cartoon-perfect mousie-wousie struggles heroically with a comically oversized biscuit. Spoiler alert: the mouse gets the biscuit in the end.

America should have two time-zones

Allison Schrager proposes that America should end Daylight Savings and consolidate its timezones into just two -- the Eastern zone goes back, Central/Mountain do nothing, and Pacific goes forward. She makes a persuasive argument that the nation already conducts its business on coastal time, and cites the safety and coordination costs of losing sleep, de-synchronizing with the rest of the world, and generally suffering from confusion and disorientation from a system designed in 1883.

Inspired by Snowden, more NSA insiders are blowing the whistle

Jesselyn Radack is a civil liberties attorney with the Government Accountability Project who has been in contact with Edward Snowden. In an ABC News interview, she reported that other NSA insiders have been inspired by Snowden's bravery and sacrifice and have come forward with further revelations about the organization's excess, criminality and lawlessness. She says that the Obama administration's war on whistleblowers has backfired, squandering the administration's credibility with its own operatives and inspiring them to speak out.

Mieville on Tolkien: There's a lot to dislike - his cod-Wagnerian pomposity, his boys-own-adventure glorying in war, his small-minded and reactionary love for hierarchical status-quos, his belief in absolute morality that blurs moral and political complexity.
