Welcome to the Kate Sharpley Library
The Kate Sharpley Library exists to preserve and promote
anarchist history. (More information.)
Everything at the Kate Sharpley Library - acquisitions,
cataloguing, preservation work, publishing, answering enquiries is
done by volunteers: we get no money from governments or the business
community. All our running costs are met by donations from members
of the collective, subscribers and supporters, or by the small
income we make through publishing. Please
consider donating
and subscribing.
We also try to promote the history of anarchism by publishing
studies based on those materials - or reprints of original documents
taken from our collection. Check out our
books and pamphlets available for sale or explore our
online documents or browse back issues of our Bulletin.
Our physical library (in California) includes books, newspapers, pamphlets,
manuscripts and ephemera documenting the history of anarchist
movements. Contact us to arrange a visit.
Recent news
A fundraising campaign has been started to buy a new
gravestone for Harry Kelly: American anarchist, printer, lecturer,
Modern School worker ...
It would hardly be possible to
enumerate all the occasions on which Kelly participated during the years
he spent in the revolutionary movement, at protest meetings, in strikes
and demonstrations; and, in the all too often underestimated work of
organizing, he always stands in the forefront. A staunch friend of Emma
Goldman and Alexander Berkman be worked with these comrades through many
years, ere our wise rulers made the decision to deport them from the
shores of America to Soviet Russia on the day of the tercentenary of the
landing of the Pilgrim Fathers from the Mayflower. We humans realize
only a small part of our dreams; Kelly is fortunate to have realized one
of his supreme dreams: a social community and a school for children of
proletarian parents in the country, far from the nerveracking influence
of the modern city. (From Harry Kelly, an appreciation by Hypllolyte Havel) http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_Archives/coldoffthepresses/havelkelly.html

Solidaridad Obrera (Workers’ Solidarity), founded in Barcelona in
1907, is the voice of Spain’s Anarcho-syndicalist Confederacion Nacional
del Trabajo (CNT: National Confederation of
Labour). These essays were issued to celebrate the hundredth anniversary
of “Soli” and together they illustrate the changing fortunes of the
Anarcho-syndicalist movement, and its enduring attempt to communicate
the anarchist idea.
Contents:
Mateo Rello on Solidaridad Obrera
1907-1939: Notes towards a history of CNT
journalism;
Catalunya, a Catalan-language
Soli by Mateo Rello;
Ferran Aisa on Solidaridad Obrera 1939-1987: Clandestinity and
Transition;
Carles Sanz on Solidaridad Obrera 1976-2006: A look back
at the history of CNT journalism over the last 30 years.
All the articles were translated by Paul Sharkey. ISBN 9781873605646. Buy a copy or read the articles for free at http://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/h44jww
We have a wiki (collaborative online workspace). Current projects include:
A listing of Freedom Press pamphlets (1889-1923)
Figures for Anarchist newspaper circulation
Listing of who was at the International Revolutionary Socialist Conference, London 14-19 July 1881 (and also at the International Conference of Revolutionary Socialists 1890, held at the Autonomie Club, 6 Windmill St, Tottenham Court Road on Sunday August 3, 1890)
US Anarchism 1886-1919 Bibliography
Plus "Still unanswered" (Who was the Russian agent in Barcelona that Krivitsky mentions?, and whatever happened to Guy Bowman?)
We
are always interested in any research on anarchism and anarchists. Our
hope is that the wiki will be a place where research is shared and
chatted about.
