53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST

2nd Place: Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com
HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times

B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to
Home‖
B3. PERSONALITY PROFILE
Steve Friess, LA Weekly, ―A Tragic Love Story‖
2nd Place: Charlotte Hsu, LA Weekly, ―Forever Scared — The Story of
Herman Atkins‖
HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"
HM: Donna Howell, Investor's Business Daily,

SINOSSI

SYNOPSIS
Three characters, three stories of "heretics", three food producers who think in a different way to describe the transformation of our Country in what in “Langhe Doc” Giorgio Bocca calls the Italy of warehouses.
We're in Langhe, a unique territory, universally recognized as one of the most beautiful places in Italy, fresh candidate for Unesco World Heritage
but afflicted by uncontrolled economic development, urbanization, overbuilding, abandonment of the less profitable areas.
Those of Maria Theresa, Silvio and Mauro are stories of people who have seen a future they did not like and have refused it. Their challenges are still open, they’re not yet fully met and perhaps they never will: they move in one direction, the world moves in another one, quite the opposite.

A Performance Installation by LEIMAY: Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya
June 10-24th, 2011
Part 1: June 10,11,13,14,15,16 4-8pm
Part 2: June 19,20,21,22,23,24 4-8pm
video: John Birdsong - http://about.me/nycbirdsong
The LAB (for installation + performance art) is pleased to present Uncovering, a performance installation by LEIMAY, led by the creative duo Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya. Uncovering is an exploration into the paradox between fear and ambition; how it affects the individual and helps define society. This two part piece will take place over the course of a two week run on the corner of 47th and Lex.
For the first week, June 10-16, LEIMAY collaborates with Tijuana born, New York based draftsman and artist Hugo Crosthwaite and an international group of New York based performers and Butoh dancers. This is a durational dance-drawing-installation that will take place 4-8pm each night; reflecting on how society’s hierarchical views of success are dominated by fear of failure.
Through a series of daily performances, the residue of sweat and movement produced by the performers will gradually expose a large scale mural-engraving hidden behind white cloth sheeting. The performance will challenge the viewer to explore the confrontation between our collective values and individual self discovery, bringing to the forefront the ephemeral nature of life.
Performed by Yamasaki Ami, Taj Black, Ximena Garnica, May-Lee Hollis, Theresa Maragio, Liz McAuliffe, Denisa Musilova, Hiram Pines, Rachel Richman, Julie Spodek and Alex Vizzi.
For the second week of Uncovering, June 19-24, the space will once again be transformed by a daily five hour solo performance by Ximena Garnica. Exploring the innate struggle that exists between the creation of self-protective mechanisms, she will publicly confront the challenge of removing them. Each day, Garnica will go through the same process of shedding liquid latex skin-moulds of her body, letting them accumulate in the space, eventually leaving her exposed, naked and vulnerable.
Performers Part Two: Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya
Throughout both parts of the installation a collection of sound vignettes by Jeremy Slater and Roland Toledo will be played. They are based on recordings of the sounds generated during the production period of this piece.
Over the two weeks, Uncovering will progress from a collective confrontation of the many, struggling in a frantic society, to the single reconciliation of the individual who by exploring her personal fear, causes the revitalization of humanity.
LEIMAY is the parapluie for Ximena Garnica art works, Shige Moriya art works and the collaboration work between these two artists at the intersection of dance, performance, and installation art. LEIMAY is currently in residency at HERE Arts Center. Their work has been developed in residencies at the Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, the New Hazlett Theater, the National Museum of Dance, and Hanoi Contemporary Arts Center. They have received fellowships and grants support from the Ford Foundation, The Puffin Foundation, The Urban Artist Initiative (UAI/NYC), The Asian American Arts Alliance, and the Japan Foundation. Their work has been recognized with the Armani Design Award of the Watermill Center for Shige Moriya and the Bessie Schonberg Individual Choreographers Residency Award of the Yard and the prestigious Van Lier Fellowship for young hispanic directors in New York for Ximena Garnica. LEIMAY is a project of the experimental and contemporary art and performance space known as CAVE. www.leimay.org

Departement illustre les thèmes principaux de la Place des Arts. Montréal 2011
"The Artistic Disciplines"
Departement created this video installation for “Pas Perdus,” a corridor filled with a mosaic of screens in Montreal’s Place des Arts. 20 scenarios depicted over 35 screens illustrate the different forms of live performance shown at the venue. While each screen has a specific action, the content often merges and interacts with a neighboring screen. Gravity is distorted and proportions are exaggerated, placing the viewer in a surreal landscape of performance.
Like in the video installation, the music is a patchwork, a hybrid made from disparate elements - strings, voice, guitar, sanza, syths, drum, piano... - deconstructed and reassembled in order to create an audio ambiance which lives in harmony with the visuals.
Disjointed and playful, this is an installation that moves or amuses you, or even better, both at the same time.
A musical tram leads the eyes and the attention, and is indispensable to the coherence of the installation as a whole.
