A report from the Washington post has stated the US military have established small air bases in Africa to keep surveillance on some African regions they consider to be a threat from \'Al Qaeda\'. Along with air bases there are also trained army personnel.

The operations that take place here are controlled by the US special operations forces but have a significantly large dependence on private military contractors.

The bases are in Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, and Seychelles.

Many experts believe that the special operation forces which have played a massive role in the Obama administrations national security strategy are working all over the globe and not just in war zones which bring in to question what the real motives are.

Germany appears to be the most snooped on EU country by the US, a map of secret surveillance activities by the National Security Agency (NSA) shows. EU officials are to question their US counterparts on data snooping in Europe.

The color-coded map of secret surveillance activities by the NSA ranks countries according to how much surveillance they are currently undergoing - green for the least and red for the most watched.

While all EU member states boast variant shades of green, Germany stands out, color-coded orange.

The source behind the revelation of the top-secret NSA surveillance program, already referred to as one of the most significant intelligence leaks in US history, was uncovered late last week. 29-year-old Snowden asked The Guardian to reveal his identity, having fled to Hong Kong to escape retaliation by the US authorities.

In the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronze statue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently under cover of a truce among three factions in the country\'s civil war.

Jesus stands, arms outstretched, on the Cherubim mountain, overlooking a route pilgrims took from Constantinople to Jerusalem in ancient times. The statue is 40 feet tall and stands on a base that brings its height to 105 feet, organizers of the project estimate.

That the statue made it to Syria and went up without incident on Oct. 14 is remarkable. The project took eight years and was set back by the civil war that followed the March 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, and the statue\'s safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands among villages where some fighters, linked to Al Qaeda, have little sympathy for Christians.

So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacks and so much danger?

An attack by Syrian rebels outside Damascus has caused a power cut across the country, the electricity minister has claimed. The "large-scale operation" targeted a gas pipeline that feeds a power station in the south of the country leaving vast swathes of the country without electricity. Power cuts were reported in the capital, as well as Aleppo in the north, and Homs in the centre of Syria. A huge blaze could be seen near Damascus International Airport, which is located near to the affected power station. It is the second attack on the power system in a month. In September a similar outage was caused after a high voltage power line was sabotaged. Syrian forces have regained the full control of the southwest of al-Muqaddimah, a suburb of Damascus. Syrian government forces secured al-Muqaddimah's industrial zone, and the al-Moddarras and Hamdan neighborhoods. This is while the militants had been fortifying their positions for over two months, creating solid barriers for themselves. A rebel attack on the border between the suburbs of Mliha and Jaramana grabbed headlines over the weekend, when a suicide bombing operation by the Al-Qaeda-inspired Nusra Front paved the way for a takeover of a strategically located factory complex. Defenders of the rebels' tactic say it will help them approach and target the Air Defense Administration building nearby, but critics say it brings the fighting directly to next-door Jaramana, which has a large Druze and Christian population.

No clemency for Edward Snowden?
No clemency for Edward Snowden?
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:37
  • Updated: 03 Nov 2013
Senior US lawmakers have rejected the idea of any clemency for the fugitive intelligence analyst Edward Snowden. "Mr Snowden violated US law. He should return to the US and face justice," said White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer. Mr Snowden asked for international help to persuade the US to drop spying charges against him in a letter given to a German politician. Mr Snowden, 30, fled to Russia in June after leaking details of far-reaching US telephone and internet espionage. He was granted temporary asylum, allowing him to live in Russia until July 2014. In a surprise move last week, a German Green MP met Mr Snowden in Moscow and revealed the former intelligence contractor's readiness to brief the German government on National Security Agency's (NSA) spying. Mr Snowden set out his position in a letter, which Hans-Christian Stroebele showed to reporters at a news conference in Berlin on Friday. "Speaking the truth is not a crime," Mr Snowden wrote. He claimed that the US government was persecuting him by charging him with espionage. On Sunday, the White House said that no offers for clemency were being discussed. This view was echoed by the Republican Congressman Mike Rogers and Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein. She said that if Mr Snowden had been a true whistleblower, he could have reported privately to her committee, but had chosen not to. "We would have seen him and we would have looked at that information. That didn't happen, and now he's done this enormous disservice to our country," Senator Feinstein said in an interview on CBS television. "I think the answer is no clemency," she said. The scale of the alleged US espionage has provoked international concern and calls for tighter supervision. Reports that the US bugged German Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone for years have caused a diplomatic rift. The head of US intelligence has defended the monitoring of foreign leaders as a key goal of operations but the US is facing growing anger over reports it spied on its allies abroad. It has also been reported that the NSA monitored French diplomats in Washington and at the UN, and that it conducted surveillance on millions of French and Spanish telephone calls, among other operations against US allies. US Secretary of State John Kerry said last week that in some cases, US spying had gone too far. He said he would work with President Barack Obama to prevent further inappropriate actions by the NSA.

A report from the Washington post has stated the US military have established small air bases in Africa to keep surveillance on some African regions they consider to be a threat from 'Al Qaeda'. "The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything. With this capability, the vast majority of human communications are automatically ingested without targeting," he told The Guardian. "I, sitting at my desk, certainly had the authority to wire-tap anyone ... even if you are not doing anything wrong, you are being watched and recorded," he added. The 'Boundless Informant' documents show NSA collecting up to 3 billion pieces of intelligence from US computer networks over a 30-day period ending in March 2013, according to The Guardian. The tool reportedly allows users to select a country on a map, view the metadata volume and select details about the collections against this or that state. http://on.rt.com/m6d0ev

El Mundo newspaper reported on Monday that it had seen an NSA document that showed the US spy agency had intercepted 60.5m phone calls in Spain between 10 December 2012 and 8 January this year."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Paul Hamilos / The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/28/spain-summons-us-ambassador-nsa-calls Let's Build It Together! "It looks like a premeditated suicide attack," a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid repercussions for talking to the foreign media. Security has been stepped up all around the popular tourist attraction, already one of China's most sensitive and well-guarded locations. The vehicle appeared to have driven several hundred metres along the pedestrian pavement in front of the Forbidden City entrance before bursting into flames, knocking down people as it went. The three occupants in the car died, as well as two tourists while 38 others were injured. Now authorities have launched an appeal for information about two suspects from its restive far western Xinjiang region. Beijing has blamed Uighur separatists and religious extremists for a series of attacks over the years in Xinjiang, saying they want to establish an independent state called East Turkestan. Giant Jesus Statue Discovered In Syria
Giant Jesus Statue Discovered In Syria
  • Order:

In the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronze statue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently under cover of a truce among three factions in the country's civil war. Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, and the statue's safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands among villages where some fighters, linked to Al Qaeda, have little sympathy for Christians. So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacks and so much danger? Because "Jesus would have done it," organizer Samir al-Ghadban quoted a Christian church leader as telling him. The backers' success in overcoming the obstacles shows the complexity of civil war, where sometimes despite the atrocities the warring parties can reach short-term truces. Al-Ghadban said that the main armed groups in the area -- Syrian government forces, rebels and the local militias of Sednaya, the Christian town near the statue site -- halted fire while organizers set up the statue, without providing further details. Rebels and government forces occasionally agree to cease-fires to allow the movement of goods. They typically do not admit to having truces because that would tacitly acknowledge their enemies. It took three days to raise the statue. Photos provided by organizers show it being hauled in two pieces by farm tractors, then lifted into place by a crane. Smaller statues of Adam and Eve stand nearby. The project, called "I Have Come to Save the World," is run by the London-based St. Paul and St. George Foundation, which Al-Ghadban directs. It was previously named the Gavrilov Foundation, after a Russian businessman, Yuri Gavrilov. Documents filed with Britain's Charity Commission describe it as supporting "deserving projects in the field of science and animal welfare" in England and Russia, but the commission's accounts show it spent less than $400 in the last four years. Al-Ghadban said most of the financing came from private donors, but did not supply further details. Russians have been a driving force behind the project -- not surprising given that the Kremlin is embattled Assad's chief ally, and the Orthodox churches in Russia and Syria have close ties. Al-Ghadban, who spoke to The Associated Press from Moscow, is Syrian-Russian and lives in both countries. Al-Ghadban said he began the project in 2005, hoping the statue would be an inspiration for Syria's Christians. He said he was inspired by Rio de Janeiro's towering Christ the Redeemer statue. He commissioned an Armenian sculptor, but progress was slow. A series of his backers died, including Valentin Varennikov, a general who participated in the 1991 coup attempt against then President Mikhail Gorbachev. He later sought President Vladimir Putin's backing for the statue project. Varennikov died in 2009. Another backer, Patriarch Ignatius IV, the Lebanon-based head of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch and All the East, died in 2012. He had donated the land for the statue, according to church official Bishop Ghattas Hazim. By 2012, the statue was ready, but Syria was aflame, causing the project's biggest delay, al-Ghadban said. Majority Sunni Muslims dominate the revolt, and jihadists make up some of the strongest fighting groups. Other Muslim groups along with the 10-percent Christian minority have stood largely with Assad's government, or remained neutral, sometimes arming themselves to keep hard-line rebels out of their communities. Churches have been vandalized, priests abducted. Last month the extremists overran Maaloula, a Christian-majority town so old that some of its people still speak a language from Jesus' time. On Tuesday a militant Muslim cleric, Sheik Omar al-Gharba, posted a YouTube video of himself smashing a blue-and-white statue of the Virgin Mary. Al-Ghadban and the project's most important backer, Gavrilov, weighed canceling it.
