Syrian Activist on Ghouta Attack: "I Haven't Seen Such Death in My Whole Life"
http://www.democracynow.org - The Syrian government is facing growing pressure to allow an international probe of an alleged chemical weapons attack on the outskirts of Damascus. The Syrian opposition says government forces fired poisonous gas into rebel-held neighborhoods of Ghouta, killing hundreds of people. Video posted on YouTube this week shows frantic scenes of overwhelmed hospitals, dead children and countless bodies. If confirmed, it would stand to be the most violent incident in Syria since the rebel uprising began two years ago and one of the worst toxic attacks in decades. The alleged attack occurred just days after U.N. inspectors arrived in the country to investigate previous attacks. We're joined from Syria by Razan Zaitouneh, a lawyer and human rights activist who works with the Human Rights Violation Documentation Center. We also speak with Patrick Cockburn, a longtime Middle East correspondent for the London Independent who recently returned from reporting in Syria. "We couldn't believe our eyes," Zaitouneh says of witnessing the attack's aftermath. "I haven't seen such death in my whole life." Experts fear the disease could quickly spread given the appalling conditions millions of Syrians find themselves in after two-and-a-half-years of civil war. But will children in rebel-held areas receive the vaccines? Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad has promised the government intends to vaccinate each Syrian child regardless of where they were. He said humanitarian organisations would be given the opportunity to reach every Syrian child. However Mekdad's comments also implied that any failure would be due to the lack of rebel cooperation. The government's promise comes as a United Nations report estimates that 9.3 million Syrians, that is about 40 percent of the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance. U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry said that President Barrack Obama was considering a response and signalled that the country will act on Syria. The United States Secretary of State,John Kerry, said that "the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, the killing of women and children and innocent bystanders by chemical weapons is a moral obscenity. By any standard it is inexcusable and despite the excuses and equivocations that some have manufactured, it is undeniable." Russia, an ally of Syria, has warned against the use of military action from Western nations. The country's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said that there is no proof the Damascus government is behind the alleged chemical attacks. Speaking in Moscow he said that the "consequences of external intervention not sanctioned by the international community will only risk worsening the situation in the country." Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has told Russian newspaper "Izvestia" that the accusations that his administration used chemical weapons was politically motivated. Syrian rebels, not government used chemical weapons Russia claims
Last month, the White House announced that they had found evidence that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons against anti-government rebels, and the US declared that they would begin funding the rebels in the Syrian civil war. But according to a Russian intelligence report, it turns out that the rebels were guilty of using the arms and Russia will hand over the evidence to the UN. Here is the latest on the story. Speaking on PBS television on Wednesday he added that the use of these kinds of weapons has had an impact on US national interests. "I have not made a decision but I think it's important that if in fact we make a choice to have repercussions for the use of chemical weapons, then the Assad regime, which is involved in a civil war, trying to protect itself, will have received a pretty strong signal that it had better not do it again," Barrack Obama warned. Reports of an intercepted phone call by U.S. intelligence that confirms the involvement of the Assad government convinced Washington to act on Syria. However, the United States has yet to produce the material it says proves their case. The UK has been pushing for the other four veto holding members of the UN Security Council to authorise military action against Assad to protect Syrian civilians, however Russia, an ally of Syria, has failed to agree. No decision has been made. British Foreign Secretary, William Hague said: "We already have our own very strong view about who is to blame - that is the Assad regime, in fact there is no plausible explanation for anybody else being to blame." He added that "it is understandable that people want to see what the UN inspectors say, that is completely understandable and so that is incorporated into our motion". British MPs will have a second vote before any military action is taken, the government of David Cameron has proposed. It will come after the UN inspectors' report is ready. Obama: US can't turn 'blind eye' to Syria
President Obama says the US has presented a "powerful case" that the Syrian government was responsible for a chemical weapons attack in Damascus last month. The US blames the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad for the August 21 attack on the outskirts of Damascus and, citing intelligence reports, says sarin gas was used. He said his decision that the US should take military action against the Syrian government was not one he made lightly. "Deciding to use military force is the most solemn decision we can make as a nation," Mr Obama said. "As the leader of the world's oldest Constitutional democracy, I also know that our country will be stronger if we act together, and our actions will be more effective." He then stressed that any US military action "would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan". "There would be no American boots on the ground," he said. "Any action we take would be limited, both in time and scope - designed to deter the Syrian government from gassing its own people again and degrade its ability to do so." Though he acknowledged that "the American people are weary after a decade of war", he said the US "cannot turn a blind eye to images like the ones we've seen out of Syria". Mr Obama declared last weekend that he would seek the backing of Congress before any military action.
