Hoche Arthur Meurant.
French anarchist militant & anarcho-syndicalist. Born December 17, 1883, in Roubaix; died 13 April 1950.Young autodidact, Meurant discovered anarchism by reading Peter Kropotkin's works. An antimilitarist, during his military service in 1903, he refused to obey the orders of his "superiors" & was sent to 3 years of military prison in Algeria. There Meurant revolted & subsequently, on April 5, 1906 he was condemned to death (a sentence commuted to 10 years of servitude). An escape attempt was unsuccessful, but he was pardoned & released in 1910.
As a miner, he was a militant trade unionist with the CGTU, but was excluded by the Communists, & so joined the CGT-SR of Pierre Besnard where he collaborated in "Combat syndicaliste" until 1939. Meurant was an active propagandist for anarchism, involved with various groups in Northern France, such as "L'entraide" de Croix (a mutual aid group).
In 1921, he was again sent to prison, for several months, for distributing antimilitarist leaflets. During these years he participated in all the anarchist congresses in France & was active with the libertarian press. He went to Spain in 1937 & organized for the SIA (International Solidarity Antifascist), as well as welcoming & helping the Spanish refugees in France. Meurant supported their resistance movement & remained faithful to the libertarian ideal until his death.
