Ernest Ernestan, (1898-1954)
Biographical/historical note :
Ernest Ernestan (aka Ernest Tanrez) was born July 15, 1898, in Ghent, Belgium. Militant, writer, theorist of libertarian socialism, & a significant figure of Belgian anarchism.
Opened an antique store, then, after 1921, takes part in the "Bulletin Libertaire" & emerges as an appreciated speaker & a lucid theorist, with his many articles enriching the international anarchist press.
Ernestan militated actively for Sacco & Vanzetti, enlarging the scope of the right of asylum, &, in 1933, was involved with the "Comité Hem-Day / Léo Campion" (obtaining their release).
In 1937, to support the Spanish Revolution, he & Campion began the newspaper "Rébellion".
Taking refuge in France in 1940, he was denounced, arrested & interned for three months at Camp du Vernet in Ariège. Returning to Brussels, the Gestapo arrested him the following year & sent him to the Camp de Breendonck near Malines. Ernestan left very weakened after eight weeks of famine & forced work.
In poor health, Ernestan died in Brussels on February 17, 1954.
In addition to contributions to the international libertarian press & particularly with Hem-Day's "Pensée et Action," he wrote several works, including "Le Socialisme contre l'Autorité," "Manifeste socialiste libertaire", etc.
