CAPTAIN MISSION

Founded famed pirate utopia "Libertaria" in Madagascar.

Ghost of Chance ...returns us to territory familiar from Burroughs' 'Cities of the Red Night' trilogy. We are in 'Libertatia', a utopian colony of ex-pirates set up 'on the west coast of Madagascar'. Here 'Captain Mission' has established a community of free spirits: 'There would be no capital punishment, no slavery, no imprisonment for debt, & no interference with religion or sexuality.'

HALLOWEEN. Pagan festival of fall during which the dead can be communicated with & set to rest. Appropriated, but not totally demolished, by the churches.

All Hallows' Eve / Hallowe'en: "The original reason for disguise tonight, it being Mischief Night, was to prevent lonely spirits recognising you & snatching you away to their between-the-worlds home; & it was an additional bonus that the costumes allowed you to lead a mini-riot without being recognised ..."

Despite the failure to prove the charges, severe sentences were meted out, some defendeants getting 20 years in prison.

The IWW/anarchist (later a hardcore Communist) writer Mike Gold & best-selling novelist & short story writer Manuel Komroff were also associated with the school, as were poets Lola Ridge & Edwin Markham; Durant himself lectured on the history of philosophy.

Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Margaret Sanger, writers Jack London, Lincoln Steffens & Upton Sinclair & labor activist Elizabeth Gurley Flynn delivered individual lectures at the center.

Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting & doing the things historians usually record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry & even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks for the river.

One of his great paintings is "The funeral of the anarchist Pinelli" (I funerali dell’anarchico Pinelli 1972), which was banned for disturbing the public order. 1941 -- High Seas: While escorting a convoy of war material across the North Atlantic to Britain, the US Clemson Class destroyer Reuben James is torpedoed by a German submarine. The blast pierces the ship's magazine, & the boat quickly sinks, becoming the first US warship to be sunk by hostile action during World War II. Forty-four men are saved, but the other 96 crew members perish in icy waters.

"Woody brought his completed work to a songwriting meeting in early November & everyone agreed he'd come up with a sensational idea for a song, but all those names were a bit... boring. You didn't have to go through all that to personalize it, Seeger argued. A rousing agitprop chorus could get the same message across. If you combined a chorus with ballad verses describing the event in detail, it might make a better song. Woody agreed to give it a try & reworked the verses, while Seeger & Lampell developed the chorus that would make the song one of the Almanacs' best-known.... "

One minute later it reached 108,000 feet, eventually stabilizing at a ceiling of 120,000 feet.
