1943 -- Henry Fonda movie The Ox-Bow Incident is released. One of the essential Westerns, directed by William Wellman. Based on the novel by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. 1945 -- US: The "Little Wagner Act" is signed in Hawaii (a colony, it isn't a star on the US flag just yet), guaranteeing pineapple & sugar workers in Hawaii the right to bargain collectively.

The workers, mainly Asian Americans, soon strike for higher wages & a 40-hour week. 28,000 striking laborers shut down 33 of Hawaii's 34 plantations.

After a long & bitter 79-day strike, the workers win decisively — the first time in Hawaiian history that employers have been unable to fracture sugar-worker strikers into incohesive racial groups.

1946 -- US: The US government seizes all the bituminous coal mines hoping to break a coal miner's strike. [see April 1 & May 29]

The miners were on strike, & continued to strike, forcing the government to grant demands the owners would not. But the miners struck again on November 20th, directly against the government. The government secured an injunction to prevent the strike, but they struck anyhow, & the UMW was fined 3.5 million dollars.

"We used the weapons that we had at hand in order to fight a rebellion against the government."

1947 -- US: "Justice has been done — both ways," said white taxi cab driver Roosevelt C. Hurd, Sr., after an all-white jury acquitted him & 27 codefendants of dragging from jail, shooting, beating, & lynching Willie Earle, a black prisoner awaiting trial in Pickens, South Carolina. The acquittal verdict was rendered despite the confessions of 26 of the 28 defendants & the testimony of nine witnesses that Hurd shot Earle.

1956 -- First aerial test of an H-Bomb makes Bikini Atoll unlivable. The first hydrogen fusion bomb dropped from an airplane explodes over Namu Atoll at the northwest edge of the Bikini Atoll. The fireball is four miles in diameter. It is designated as "Cherokee," as part of "Operation Redwing."
Playing the Dozens?: CBS News reports on "60 Minutes" that the former Commander of the Soviet Union's defunct nuclear forces stated that at least 100 or more suitcase size nuclear bombs are unaccounted for.

A Former adviser to Russian President Boris Yeltsin, summoned to investigate controls on 142 suitcase sized nuclear weapons produced by the KGB during the cold war, is quoted as saying,

1979 -- US: Frisco Bay Area agit-prop group called the Union of Concerned Commies (UCC) begins in early 1979 as a left-libertarian intervention into the anti-nuke movement, then at the height of its strength & militancy.

This intervention involves a serious attempt to present a radical critique with attention-grabbing style & innovative use of media. For instance, the same cartoon graphics (usually by Jay Kinney & Paul Mavrides of Anarchy Comix) appeared on leaflets, posters, & T-shirts distributed at antinuke events. Some of the UCCers settle in for a sustained effort within the movement, mostly through the Abalone Alliance newspaper It's About Times.

Others, sought a more exciting terrain. A glimpse of such is provided by Frisco's notorious “White Night Riot” of May 21, 1979.

This night, an angry crowd of gay men & women, quickly joined by hundreds of young workers & marginals, attack City Hall & the police following a slap-on-the-wrist sentence for macho former cop & former supervisor Dan White, the convicted killer of Mayor George Moscone & gay supervisor Harvey Milk. Several UCCers participated in the events, & immediately afterward mass-produced a T-shirt (designed by Paul Mavrides) showing a burning cop car, the date & place of the riot, & the words "No Apologies."
