Our Daily Bleed...

Man Ray photo
I woke up with a spot of blood
over my eye. A scratch
halfway across my forehead.
But I'm sleeping alone these days.

Why on earth would a man raise
his hand
against himself, even in sleep?
It's this & similar questions
I'm trying to answer this morning.
As I study my face in the window.

APRIL 19

What is the end of fame? 'Tis but to fill
A certain portion of uncertain paper:
Some liken it to climbing up a hill,
Whose summit, like all hills, is lost in vapor;
For this men write, speak, preach, & heroes kill,
& bards burn what they call their "midnight taper,"
To have, when the original is dust,
A name, a wretched picture, & worse bust.

— from Don Juan, Canto 1, stanza 217

(Lord) George Gordon Byron dies at sunset, of marsh fever, at Missolonghi. He had been summoning troops to help the Greeks fight for independence. His diaries are burned: "The whole memoirs were fit only for a brothel, & would damn Lord B to everlasting infamy if published". Shame. It was Byron who declared,

"You may call the people a mob, but do not forget that a mob often speaks the sentiments of the people."

(...) Nous, citoyens de Paris, nous avons la mission d'accomplir la révolution moderne, la plus large et la plus féconde de toutes celles qui ont illuminé l'histoire. Nous avons le devoir de lutter et de vaincre!"
