1600 -- Japan: Will Adams (the original Anjin-sama) lands.
1775 -- US: Midnight rider Paul Revere, on his way to warn Concord that the British were coming, is arrested by the Redcoats & relieved of his horse. (Revere's companion, William Dawes, succeeded in delivering the message.)
1775 -- US: Minutemen Captain John Parker orders not to fire unless fired upon. Revolution begins at Lexington Common, with the shot "heard round the world."
1824 -- British romantic poet Lord Byron, dies, 36, of malarial fever contracted in a rainstorm in Greece, where he was drilling troops seeking liberation from the Turkish Empire. His heart & lungs are buried in Greece, his body in England.What is the end of fame? 'Tis but to fill

(Lord) George Gordon Byron dies at sunset, of marsh fever, at Missolonghi. He had been summoning troops to help the Greeks fight for independence. His diaries are burned: "The whole memoirs were fit only for a brothel, & would damn Lord B to everlasting infamy if published". Shame. It was Byron who declared,
"You may call the people a mob, but do not forget that a mob often speaks the sentiments of the people."

1832 -- José Echegaray y Eizaguirre lives (1832-1916). Leading Spanish dramatist last quarter of the 19th century. Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904, with poet Frédéric Mistral. His first play El Libro Talonario (The Checkbook) was produced when he was 42 years old, & he averaged two plays a year thereafter.

1851 -- US: Kalapuyan Atfalate cede lands to US in exchange for a small reservation at Wapato Lake, Oregon.
1854 -- France: Charles Angrand (1854-1926) lives, Normandy. Impressionist, Pointillist painter & anarchiste illustrator.Influenced by Van Gogh, associated with Seurat, Cross, Luce & Paul Signac & other libertarian illustrators & Jean Grave's "Les temps nouveaux."
1861 -- US: Civil War claims its first fatalities: four Union soldiers are stoned to death by a Baltimore mob.

1890 -- "The Historical Development of Anarchism" by Max Nettlau is published in "Freiheit" (April 19/May 17).
1897 -- US: First Boston Marathon.
1900 -- Richard Hughes (Fiction as Truth) lives (1900-1976). British playwright, poet, short story writer, & novelist, born in Wales, director of the National Theatre of Wales from 1924 to 36. His play, Danger was possibly the first written especially for radio. Wrote A High Wind in Jamaica.

1908 --US: Despite warnings, police do not interfere with Emma Goldman's lecture at Walton's Pavilion in San Francisco, which is attended by 5,000 people.
1909 -- France: In Paris, Jean Goldschild, with Miguel Almereyda (Eugène Vigo; his adopted name, Almereyda, is an anagram: Y'a la merde), Rene de Marmande, Georges Durupt, & others, are part of a group of friends who today form the "Fédération révolutionnaire", promoting direct action for "La destruction radicale de la société capitaliste et autoritaire". Vigo, father of the famed film director Jean Vigo, died in prison under mysterious circumstances.[Details / context]
1912 -- France: Joséphine Coueille (1912-1995), known as Andrée Prevotel, lives. Anarchiste & anarcho-syndicaliste, free thinker. Charged in the "Sterilizers of Bordeaux" case (for promoting vasectomies), her charges were dropped, but her husband, André Prévotel, was sent to prison.

1915 -- US: Emma Goldman speaks on "The Failure of Christianity" & the Billy Sunday movement in Paterson, N.J., after attending one of Sunday's revival meetings.
1916 --US: Benefit banquet for Emma Goldman at the Hotel Brevoort is attended by notable artists, writers, socialists, & doctors, including John Cowper Powys, Alexander Harvey, Robert Henri, George Bellows, Robert Minor, Boardman Robinson, & Rose Pastor Stokes.
1919 -- Russia: Mutinerie des marins de la mer noire (Sailors Mutiny in the Black Sea), April 19-21. A French delegation, made up partly of anarchiste sailors, demands suspension of the war against Russia, the return of the ships to France, & no disciplining for their rebellion.Several French warships around Sébastopol (brought in, as part of the Allied intervention against the Russian Revolution & to help prevent the advances of the Red Army) are subject to mutiny. It begins with the sailors on the battleship "France," & spreads.
In Sébastopol, French officers massacre participants in a demonstration to prevent them from fraternizing with the mutineers.
Despite the promises of the officers, the mutineers (such as Alphonse Cannone) are treacherously arrested & receive from 10 to 20 years in prison.

1933 -- US: Silver Spoon? Beloved & Respected comrade Leader President Franklin D. Roosevelt takes the US off the gold standard.
1939 -- US: Anti-American Ingrates? Connecticut finally approves the Bill of Rights (only 148 years late).
1943 -- Switzerland: Dr. Albert Hoffman's first planned LSD experiment (see 16 April). To further investigate the psychedelic effects of LSD, he ingests 250 micrograms (gamma), a fairly strong dose at Sandoz lab in Basle. He has resynthesized LSD-25 in a search for a cure for migraines, & has visions (the first synthesis was in 1938).

1945 -- Germany: Julius Nolden freed from Luttringhausen prison with the arrival of the Allies today. Previously head of the FAUD, on Pentecost Sunday of 1947 he met in Darmstadt with other comrades to establish the Federation of Libertarian Socialists.Nolden was head of the anarcho-syndicalist FAUD (Free Union of German Workers) in the Rhineland & one of 83 sent to prison for "preparing acts of high treason." Unfortunately several of the 83 were murdered in prison by their captors.
1948 -- Costa Rica: The army is abolished.
1952 -- England: 35 Operation Gandhi supporters picket Aldermaston AWRE, a spy base.

1958 -- ¶ During this month Beatster Jack Kerouac is beaten up by three men outside the Kettle of Fish bar on McDougal Street in New York.In January of this year Kerouac has become famous as "father of the Beat Generation." During this Spring MGM Studios buys film rights to The Subterraneans for $15,000. On The Road movie rights sold to Tri-Way Productions for $25,000 (Kerouac will only receive $2500 before Tri-Way goes out of business.); Partisan Review publishes article by Norman "Poddy" Podhoretz called "The Know-Nothing Bohemians" which criticizes Kerouac & the Beat Generation. Kerouac also records a music/reading session with Steve Allen on piano.

1971 -- US: Several hundred Vietnam Veterans Against the War begin an encampment on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Launch "Operation Dewey Canyon III (April 19-23).
1974 -- Fernand Planche (1900-1974) dies. French writer/activist of "Anarchist Synthesis" (establishing links between all the various tendencies).A founder of the review "La conquête du pain," & participant in "Brochure mensuelle."
Imprisoned the winter 1939-1940 for inciting soldiers to desert, Planche was interned in Germany as a "subversive element."
1978 -- US: Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader California Governor Jerry Brown refuses a request to extradite American Indian Movement (AIM) leader Dennis Banks to South Dakota to stand trial.

1982 -- US: Travel to Cuba re-banned.
1988 -- US: Supreme Court rules the Forest Service can build a logging road through sacred lands of Yurok, Karok & Tolowa tribes in Northern California.
1989 -- Turret explosion aboard USS Iowa (BB-61) kills 47 sailors. The explosion is initially blamed on an alleged suicide pact between gay sailors, as conjectured by Naval Investigative Service & as leaked to NBC News. Eventually, the explosion is found to have been caused by unstable gun powder. Surviving gunner's mate sues NBC & Navy for libel & defamation of character.
1989 -- US: A vicious gang rape in New York's Central Park attracts worldwide headlines. 3,254 other rapes were reported in the park this year.
1990 -- US: A new NBA basketball record: Detroit Pistons & Philadelphia 76'ers get into a fight accruing $162,500 in fines.
1993 -- US: Tax Dollars at Whork? Whacko Federal agents attack whacko Branch Davidian compound near Whaco, Texass, whacking or incinerating over 80 women, men, & children.
1995 -- US: Bombing of Federal Building in Oklahoma City kills 168.The bombing wrongly sets off a hunt for "Arab terrorists" & Muslims. Results in new laws suspending due process for non-US citizens. The Constitution & Bill of Rights, treated to a political crapshoot, are again under attack in 2001-3, with Arabs & Muslims being arrested & held incommunicado without evidence or trial & spy agencies broadening their surveillance of American citizens.
1999 -- Puerto Rico: Accident Prone? A 500 pound military bomb "accidentally" kills civilian guard David Sanes at a US bombing range in Vieques, sparking a revival of the anti-US Navy struggle that results in more than a year without bombings & hundreds of people arrested in civil disobedience acts.The US Navy confirmed that it had used napalm bombs & "accidentally" fired 267 cannon rounds tipped with depleted uranium on the range.

2001 -- Ethiopia: In a brutal attack by police, 39 people are killed & over than 250 injured on the second day of violent clashes in the capital, Addis Ababa. Young demonstrators had come out in support of a student boycott of lectures. "Addis Ababa looked like a city under siege as mobs of youths clashed violently with police, creating anarchy all over the capital." (BBC News)
2009 -- Author J.G. Ballard dies at 78. Famed for novels such as Crash & Empire of the Sun. Susan Sontag called him "one of the most important, intelligent voices in contemporary fiction."
His first book was The Drowned World, in 1961. His acclaimed 1984 novel Empire of the Sun was based on his prison experience under the Japanese during WWII.
