Masked men have set fire to the studios of pro-opposition Maldives television station Raajje TV, causing extensive damage. It came just hours before the Maldives Supreme Court annulled results from the first round of voting in presidential elections, and called a fresh ballot for 20 October. The court had postponed the second round of voting amid allegations of electoral fraud. WATCH Maldives TV Station Attack Caught On Camera. News Today
(SkyNews) A fresh presidential election is to be held in the Maldives after the Supreme Court annulled the results from September 7's vote. The outcome from the original ballot was challenged by a candidate who cited there were irregularities in the process which included under-age voters and fake identity cards being used. A presidential run-off election was suspended on September 28 after the court ordered officials to postpone it. The run-off had been expected to help end months of political turmoil triggered by the removal of former President Mohamed Nasheed, who was ousted from power 20 months ago amid a mutiny by police. Mr Nasheed had won a first round on September 7 with 45.45% of the vote, but fell short of the 50% needed for outright victory. Just hours before the court's decision, a pro-opposition television station in the capital Male came under attack, when masked men started a fire which gutted the building. About six men on motorbikes threatened and chased away a security guard before setting fire to studios at Raajje TV, according to station owner Akram Kamaludeen. Security camera footage showed masked men spreading liquid around in a studio control room and a stairwell before setting them ablaze. Other offices in the building were reportedly damaged in the fire. Raajje TV is recognised as supporting former President Mohamed Nasheed, leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party, who is currently standing for re-election. news, news intro, news today, breaking news, flash news, daily news, news channel, the latest news today, live news, news 2013 this week, news 2013,world news, world news today,Maldives (Country),Television Station,Tuvalu (Country),Television (Invention),Riot (Protest Type),Election (Art Subject)- published: 09 Oct 2013

UN chief visits Maldives to survey tsunami damage News 2005
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan left the Maldives on Monday after a two day visit - part of a tour to assess damage to countries affected by the December 26 tsunami. The human toll in the Maldives - which has a population of just 278-thousand - was much smaller than in other Asian nations struck by the waves. The overall toll across the region is nearing 160-thousand. Annan who met with President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom late on Sunday travelled to the islands of Kolhusushi and Vilusushi by sea plane. Gayoom - who has ruled the Islamic nation with an iron fist since 1978 - said the UN had been a key player in the development that the Maldives has been able to achieve over the past 30 years and thanked all those who have assisted the Maldives since the recent disaster. Annan said he hoped that in rebuilding after the destruction the Maldives one will not just replace what has existed but try and improve on it. The United Nations is now coordinating the humanitarian response in all the countries affected by the disaster. The low-lying Maldives a string of 1192 coral atolls about 500 kilometres 300 miles off the coast of India has said it will eventually need 1.5 b billion US dollars for reconstruction. A total of 13 Maldivian islands were destroyed by the tsunami and another 70 experienced disruptions in water supplies and electricity.
