Shelton Jackson "Spike" Lee (born March 20, 1957) is an American film director, producer, writer, and actor. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has produced over 35 films since 1983.
Lee's movies have examined race relations, colorism in the black community, the role of media in contemporary life, urban crime and poverty, and other political issues. Lee has won numerous awards, including an Emmy Award. He has also received two Academy Award nominations.
As Lee became more well known and his work and comments were followed more closely, he became embroiled in some controversies. After the 1990 release of Mo' Better Blues, Lee was accused of antisemitism by the Anti-Defamation League and several film critics. They criticized the characters of the club owners Josh and Moe Flatbush, described as "Shylocks". Lee denied the charge, explaining that he wrote those characters in order to depict how black artists struggled against exploitation. Lee said that Lew Wasserman, Sidney Sheinberg or Tom Pollock, the Jewish heads of MCA and Universal Studios, were unlikely to allow antisemitic content in a film they produced. He said he could not make an antisemitic film because Jews run Hollywood, and "that's a fact."[11]
In May 1999, the New York Post reported that Lee made an inflammatory comment about Charlton Heston, president of the National Rifle Association, while speaking to reporters at the Cannes Film Festival. Lee was quoted as saying the National Rifle Association should be disbanded and, of Heston, someone should "Shoot him with a .44 Bull Dog."[12][13] Lee said he intended it as a joke. He was responding to coverage about whether Hollywood was responsible for school shootings. Lee said, "The problem is guns," he said.[14] Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey condemned Lee as having "nothing to offer the debate on school violence except more violence and more hate."[14]
In 2002, after remarks made by Mississippi Senator Trent Lott regarding Senator Strom Thurmond's failed presidential bid, Lee said that Lott was a "card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan."[15]
In June 2003 Lee sought an injunction against Spike TV to prevent them from using his nickname.[16] Lee claimed that because of his fame, viewers would think he was associated with the new channel.[17][18]
Lee sparked controversy on a March 28, 2004, segment on ABC when he said that basketball player Larry Bird was overrated because of his race, saying, "The most overrated player of all time, I would say it'd be Larry Bird. Now, Larry Bird is one of the greatest players of all time, but listen to the white media, it's like this guy was like nobody ever played basketball before him—Larry Bird, Larry Bird, Larry Bird, Larry Bird, Larry Bird."

Last night on OWN’s Where Are They Now?, Raven Symone sat down with Oprah and made a comment that is stirring up a lot of controversy on social media.
When pressed by Oprah about others thinking of her as a gay person first and foremost, Symone turned the focus to race as well. “I want to be labeled a human who loves humans,” she said. “I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American, I’m not an African-American. I’m an American.”
You can tell from Oprah’s reaction that she knows how people are going to react to that one, and if this small sampling from Twitter this morning is any indication, people are not happy with Symone:
It will be interesting to see if/how Symone chooses to follow up on her comments later today. If she says anything, we’ll be sure to let you know.

The Voodoo Macbeth is a common nickname for the Federal Theatre Project's 1936 New York production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring an all-African American cast directed by Orson Welles. The production relocated the setting of the play from Scotland to a fictional Caribbean island based on Haiti, and acquired its nickname due to its use of voodoo imagery in place of the witchcraft in the original play. A box-office sensation, the production is regarded as a landmark theatrical event for several reasons: its innovative interpretation of the play, its success in promoting African-American theatre, and its role in securing the reputation of its 20-year-old director.

Facts of my death This is drjhaney. I hope you noticed the title of this message. It is one that I have been working on over the last couple of days in an effort to tell you about my death of a heart attack on January 15, 2013, in the examination of the admission room at Summit Hospital in Hermitage, Tennessee, in the emergency room. It was on this date that I took my wife and granddaughter, Alana to have a muscle strain examined that my wife had been struggling with over the last couple of weeks. While she was being examined in the admission room, I took a seat at the end of her bed, and laid back to rest my eyes, and had a heart attack, witnessed by my wife, granddaughter and medical personell from the emergency room. During the course of this excitment, i was dead for approxiomately 8-10 minutes, having lost my counsciousness, my pulse and my heart beat. After vigerous efforts on the part of the medical staff, the wailing and pleading of my wife and grand daughter for my life (joined by all of the other medical personall who had gathered in the hallway because of all of the noise and crying, I regained my counsciousness, pulse and heart beat and came back to life. In short, I died for approximately 8-10 minutes, and came back to life. This is the essence of the story that can be easily varified. I want you to know about this story because much information has bee posted on the various social media websites about my sickness and death. I am still alive. I am still uploading videos to the social media sites and this message will be apart of those uploads in the future. My address is http://www.tnstate.edu/write/student/.... In the United States, the first drug law was passed in San Francisco in 1875, banning the smoking of opium in opium dens. The reason cited was "many women and young girls, as well as young men of respectable family, were being induced to visit the Chinese opium-smoking dens, where they were ruined morally and otherwise." This was followed by other laws throughout the country, and federal laws which barred Chinese people from trafficking in opium. The distinction between its use by white Americans and Chinese immigrants was thus based on the form in which it was ingested: Chinese immigrants tended to smoke it, while it was often included in various kinds of generally liquid medicines often (but not exclusively) used by people of European descent. The laws targeted opium smoking, but not other methods of ingestion.[11] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_of_drugs. former teacher fired after suggesting Obama die from Ebola states" blacks have chip on their shoulder blames whitey for everything" frank taaffe of the "white voice com" podcast and Zimmerman supporter referenced blacks "blaming whitey for everything" suggested on the white voice" affirmative action will lead to reverse slavery" http://www.rawstory.com/2015/11/whoa-black-activist-explodes-after-white-goper-blames-black-culture-for-cops-attacking-school-girls/. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5IJyWwP33eQ. extremist KKK members preparing for race war Domestic terrorists preparing for a race war aka Trumps "passionate followers" http://www.rawstory.com/2015/11/federal-agents-bust-up-plot-by-virginia-white-supremacists-to-shoot-up-black-churches-to-start-a-race-war/. fox news justifying violence against blacks?

American dentists Doctor Walter Palmer shot a lion in Africa and the emotional wrecks around the world went ballistic, the moaning and outrage continues as of this writing (the lion was shot on July 1st, 2015, this writing created September 13th, 2015).
I challenge you to stand next to a lion without a barrier protecting you or any restrain on the lion. That lion will pounce upon you and tear you apart without any provocation. Lions are vicious beasts.
Now stand next to a cow under the same circumstances and what happens? Nothing, the cow will either look at you; continue chewing its cud, or walk away dropping poop for you to step in.
Thousands of cows are put down a day around the world and not a word of protest from these lion lovers. Put down one vicious lion and they react with pure insanity. The situation is now compounded.
An article appearing in The Dallas Morning News the Sunday, September 13th, 2015 edition reprinted from The New York Times illustrates the damage caused by these vicious lion apologists. The article headlines “Trophy hunting ban hits Botswanans ‘ livelihoods.”
Caucasians from the west saw fit to impose on Africans their value system in reference to animals on the African continent. A form of 21st century tacit imperialism disguised as compassion for the animals. The trophy hunts are now banned in Botswana depriving the inhabits of resources. The hunts provided money for the Africans as guides and other related services. The meat left behind by the unwanted trophy’s carcass provided free meat. Money from the hunts provided scholarships, toilets, and various other forms of health and sanitary improvements. No money now equals to no improvements. Also no meat in the diets of many.
Without the beast being culled they now are rampaging through the land. By day elephants ravage farms eating and stomping on valuable crops. At night lions and other beast attach livestock creating fear among the residents.
Remember never judge liberals by the consequences of their actions, they are to be judged by their good intentions no matter the devastation they cause.

Hours after a political rally for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was shut down by Black Lives Matter protesters Saturday, the senator from Vermont announced he hired an African-American woman as his press secretary. As president, Sanders said he would address physical, political, legal and economic violence waged against racial minorities. He said he would reform the criminal justice system and decried physical violence against African-Americans "perpetrated by the state." Symone Sanders, the national youth chair of the Coalition on Juvenile Justice, introduced Sanders in Seattle at his biggest event yet. Some 12,000 people attended. In a 10-minute speech, she spoke on racial tensions and of African-Americans who had died while in custody of law enforcement.

Hours after a political rally for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was shut down by Black Lives Matter protesters Saturday, the senator from Vermont announced he hired an African-American woman as his press secretary.
Symone Sanders, the national youth chair of the Coalition on Juvenile Justice, introduced Sanders in Seattle at his biggest event yet. Some 12,000 people attended.
In a 10-minute speech, she spoke on racial tensions and of African-Americans who had died while in custody of law enforcement.
"You know which candidate for president will shut down the private prison industry," Symone Sanders said. "You know which candidate will have the courage to fight unjust mandatory minimums and the death penalty."
An earlier political rally in Seattle was shut down when a Black Lives Matter protester leapt on stage.
"We're shutting this event down - now," activist Marissa Johnson said.
She said Sanders says that he cares about grassroots movements, but "The biggest grassroots movement in this country right now is Black Lives Matter."
Sanders responded by posting his stance on racial justice to his website.
"We must pursue policies that transform this country into a nation that affirms the value of its people of color," the post said.
As president, Sanders said he would address physical, political, legal and economic violence waged against racial minorities. He said he would reform the criminal justice system and decried physical violence against African-Americans "perpetrated by the state."
"The chants are growing louder. People are angry and they have a right to be angry," the post read. "We should not fool ourselves into thinking that this violence only affects those whose names have appeared on TV or in the newspaper."

Populations in America have a diverse history and mixing of the pot of culture, religion, and yes even population mixing of different ethnicities and peoples. This can be observed with a small extent from the exception of molecular genetic ancestry structures in living people of today.

Editor Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham lectures on her most recent publication, African American Lives.
Recording the achievements of over 600 individuals, African American Lives. is the most comprehensive biography of African-Americans published to date. Editors Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Henry Louis Gates Jr. worked from a master list put together by 16 of the nation's leading African-American scholars to select both famous and near-forgotten figures of the past 400 years for inclusion.
From Esteban, the earliest known African to land on America's shores, to professional golfer Tiger Woods, the stories of these men and women illuminate African-American history through the immediacy of personal experience. How do the personal choices and circumstances of a single individual shape the contours of a larger history? What editorial choices had to be made to limit this history?
Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham is professor of history and African and African-American Studies at Harvard University. A prize-winning author and editor, she has devoted her research primarily to the history of African-American women. She is currently working on two books -- one a biography of NAACP field worker Katherine Johnson and the second on racial construction of citizenship as well as completing a study on the history of Lilly Endowment's grant-making to African-American religious institutions.

The Crack Cocaine Epidemic during the mid-80’s until the early 90’s affected the urban African-American community devastatingly, and displayed the disdainful side of our American government, displaying their dogmatic, torturous nature, by using the urban African-American, poverty-stricken environment to enforce cocaine throughout the streets and by using drugs, especially cocaine, as propaganda to enforce a war movement to increase capital for the governments own cynical wrongdoings with other nations’ dictators.
This is my very first documentary, so be cautious when supplying criticism. I am a 13 year-old producer, journalist, poet, and future entrepreneur that strives to learn more about society, and the human condition. I implore you to check out my future videos, and by this summer I will try to post another documentary. In the meantime, I make beats and write poetry, so I will upload videos concerning those. Be sure to like and subscribe, but more importantly, learn. I do not own any video or audio used throughout this video, and will list the songs/tracks used throughout.

Colored People: A Memoir - Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on African-American History (1994)

Colored is a term used in the United States to refer to black people (i.e., persons of sub-Saharan African ancestry; members of the black race). Since the success of the African-American Civil rights movement, the term, along with "negro" and others, has been largely replaced by "black." According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word colored was first used in the 14th Century.
In other English-speaking countries, the term has varied meanings. In South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the term Coloured refers both to a specific ethnic group of complex mixed origins, which is considered neither black nor white, and in other contexts to people of mixed race; in neither context is its usage considered derogatory. In British usage, the term refers to "a person who is wholly or partly of non-white descent" and its use may be regarded as antiquated or offensive, and other terms are preferable, particularly when referring to a single ethnicity.
The term should not be confused with the term people of color, which generally refers to all non-white people.
The term colored appeared in North America during the colonial era. In 1851 an article in the New York Times referred to the "colored population". In 1863, the War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops. The first 12 Census counts in the U.S. enumerated '"colored" people, who totaled nine million in 1900. The Census counts of 1910--1960 enumerated "negroes."
"It's no disgrace to be colored," the black entertainer Bert Williams famously observed early in the century, "but it is awfully inconvenient."
"Colored people lived in three neighborhoods that were clearly demarcated, as if by ropes or turnstiles," writes Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. about growing up in segregated West Virginia in the 1960s. "Welcome to the Colored Zone, a large stretched banner could have said... Of course, the colored world was not so much a neighborhood as a condition of existence."
"For most of my childhood, we couldn't eat in restaurants or sleep in hotels, we couldn't use certain bathrooms or try on clothes in stores," recalls Gates. His mother retaliated by not buying clothes she was not allowed to try on. He remembered hearing a white man deliberately calling his father by the wrong name. "'He knows my name, boy,' my father said after a long pause. 'He calls all colored people George.'" When Gates' female cousin became the first black cheerleader at the local high school, she was not allowed to sit with the team in a Naugahyde booth and drink Coke from a glass, but had to stand at the counter drinking from a paper cup. Professor Gates also wrote about his experiences in his 1995 book, Colored People: A Memoir.
In the 21st century, colored is generally not regarded as a politically correct term. It lives on in the association name National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, generally called just NAACP, without actually enunciating the word for which each letter stands.
In 2008 Carla Sims, communications director for the NAACP in Washington DC, said "the term 'colored' is not derogatory, [the NAACP] chose the word 'colored' because it was the most positive description commonly used [in 1909, when the association was founded]. It's outdated and antiquated but not offensive." To date, there has not been a movement to change the name of the organization to a more politically correct term such as the "National Association for the Advancement of African-Americans."

In 2002, Gates was selected to give the Jefferson Lecture, in recognition of his "distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities."
Gates has hosted several PBS television miniseries, including the history and travel program Wonders of the African World and the biographical African American Lives and Faces of America. Gates sits on the boards of many notable arts, cultural, and research institutions. He serves as the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University, where he is director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research.
Gates hosted Faces of America, a four-part series presented by PBS in 2010. In prison, every day is a fight for survival. An inmate's most important weapon may not be a shank, but instead a gang membership.
Mara Salvatrucha (commonly abbreviated as MS, Mara, and MS-13) is a transnational criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles and has spread to other parts of the United States, Canada, Austrialia, and Central America.[1] The majority of the gang is ethnically composed of Central Americans and active in urban and suburban areas. In the U.S., the MS-13 specially has a heavy presence in Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California; the Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas of Fairfax County, Virginia, Montgomery County, Maryland, and Prince George's County, Maryland; Long Island, New York; the Boston, Massachusetts area; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Houston, Texas. There is also a sizable presence of MS-13 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Members of MS distinguish themselves by tattoos covering the body and also often the face, as well as the use of their own sign language. They are notorious for their use of violence and a subcultural moral code that predominantly consists of merciless revenge and cruel retributions. This excessive cruelty of the distinguished members of the "Maras" or "Mareros" earned them a path to be recruited by the Sinaloa Cartel battling against Los Zetas in an ongoing drug war south of the United States border.[2][3][4] Their wide-ranging activities and elevated status has even caught the eye of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who recently initiated wide-scale raids against known and suspected gang members netting hundreds of arrests across the country.
The Mara Salvatrucha gang originated in Los Angeles, set up in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants in the city's Pico-Union neighborhood who immigrated to the United States after the Central American civil wars of the 1980s.[5][6]
Originally, the gang's main purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other, more established gangs of Los Angeles, who were predominantly composed of Mexicans and African-Americans.[7]
Many Mara Salvatrucha gang members from the Los Angeles area have been deported after being arrested.[8] As a result of these deportations, members of MS have recruited more members in their home countries. The Los Angeles Times contends that deportation policies have contributed to the size and influence of the gang both in the United States and in Central America.[8] According to the 2009 National Gang Threat Assessment, "The gang is estimated to have 30,000 to 50,000 members and associate members worldwide, 8,000 to 10,000 of whom reside in the United States."[9]
In recent years the gang has expanded into the Washington, D.C. area, in particular the areas of Langley Park and Takoma Park near the Washington border have become centers of MS gang activity.[10]
Sinaloa Cartel hierarchy in early 2008
MS-13 presence -- darkness indicates strength
In August 2011, six San Francisco MS-13 members were convicted of racketeering and conspiracy, including three murders, in what at the time was the city's largest-scope gang trial in many years. Another 18 defendants reported to have ties to the gang plead guilty before trial.[36]
In 2011, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in New Haven, CT was vandalized on multiple occasions with the "MS-13 tag" and "kill whites" in orange spray paint.
Enjoy!
