A bit of classical Islamic architecture in downtown Bandar, Brunei, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque stands as a tribute to Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien. The Sultan, father of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, is regarded as the architect of modern Brunei.  Anchored in a lagoon beside the Mosque is a replica of a 16th century Mahligai, or royal barge, where religious ceremonies were held during the 1960s and 1970s.
