EU Development Days open with focus on hunger in Africa
www.euronews.com This year's opening of the European Development Days coincides with World Food Day - an occasion to remind us that around one billion people face hunger. Food security will be one of the main topics discussed by politicians, academics and NGOs at the event in Brussels. Africa is the only continent where hunger is on the rise - despite its agricultural potential. More development aid could help, according to Mozambique's President Armando Emílio Guebuza who addressed delegates on the first day of the event. "To increase productivity, we need technical and professional training in order to improve agricultural seeds, to know how to better use them, to better manage irrigation and how to reduce losses during harvest and post-harvest periods," Guebuza told euronews. The EU donates one billion euros a year to tackle hunger. It might do more if member states agree to increase development aid by 20 percent in the 2014-2020 budget, as proposed by the Commission. "Definitely nobody challenges the need to increase development, but it is more a discussion on the overall package. How much money should be channelled through the EU and how much should be going through the member countries?" said the EU's Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs. With food prices going up, the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation this month warned about a possible new hunger crisis like the one in 2007-08. From the event in Brussels, euronews correspondent Isabel Marques da ...

Mansa Musa and Islam in Africa: Crash Course World History #16
In which John Green teaches you about Sub-Saharan Africa! So, what exactly was going on there? It turns out, it was a lot of trade, converting to Islam, visits from Ibn Battuta, trade, beautiful women, trade, some impressive architecture, and several empires. John not only cover the the West African Malian Empire, which is the one Mansa Musa ruled, but he discusses the Ghana Empire, and even gets over to East Africa as well to discuss the trade-based city-states of Mogadishu, Mombasa, and Zanzibar. In addition to all this, John considers emigrating to Canada. My Heart of Darkness
In this extraordinary and revelatory documentary four war veterans and former enemies of the South Africa/Angola conflict journey back to past battlefields deep within the African interior in search of reconciliation, forgiveness and possibly even atonement. A deep and characterful appraisal of what war does to men, it is a frightful insight into those who snap awake in the middle of the night, running, sweating, pursued ... terrified. "What does a man have to do to regain his self-worth after losing it?" asks former South African soldier Marius Van Niekerk as he returns to Angola to face his enemies from the brutal civil war. As he leafs through his "box of shameful memories", full of photos of young South African soldiers posing by the bodies of those they killed, Marius embarks on a deeply personal narrative. Centred around a hugely symbolic journey by river-boat back into the bush, the film conveys the darkness of the Angolan wilderness, the darkness of the white man's cruel treatment of Africans, and the unfathomable darkness within every human from which springs heinous acts of evil. War is always complex and this one was a surrogate battlefield for the Cold War. After Independence from Portugal, Angola was thrown into a civil war for nearly three decades between the competing liberation movements. The two main factions were the MPLA, backed by the Soviet Union and UNITA, backed by South and Africa and the US. Marius has come to face his demons in the form of three ...

The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia (Full Length Documentary)
VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. Silent Army
Still dealing with the death of his wife, Eduard is a chef from the Netherlands who has come to Africa to open a restaurant with his young son Thomas. Thomas soon strikes up a friendship with Abu, a boy whose father works alongside Eduard at the eatery and life seems happy. However, in a nearby country, war has broken out and one of the leaders of a rebel faction is filling the ranks of his army with stolen children. One night, Abu, along with a dozen other children from his village, is kidnapped by rebels. Thomas is inconsolable when he finds his best friend gone and urges his father to find him. Eduard's about to discover the harsh reality of the suffering tortures Abu and the other children have been enduring as young foot-soldiers. Based on the true stories of children from War Child projects, The Silent Army stars both actors and real-life child soldiers in the depiction of this outrageous human-rights violation. Supported by UNICEF, War Child and UNESCO.

Gold Mines of South Africa / Kevin Slean
news.bbc.co.uk My Days of Traveling - Part 4 The beginning of travels started in January 1965 when I traveled from Dublin by boat to Liverpool and continued onto London by train, arriving in London on a cold wintery morning. I first stayed in a B&B on Sussex Gardens and to get to know London I use to go out about 4am with a map and walk around to get know London with out all the traffic. The first place I visit was 28 Hyde Park Gate the residence of Winton Churchill when he was on death bed. I wondered down this narrow mews to his door and few police men about never said a word. Days later I was again on my early morning walk-abouts and I was in the Westminster area to see Big Ben and there was a lot of people around and I asked a police man what was going on. He told me Churchill was lying in state all night at Westminster. Just then Big Ben began the chime for 6am and he told me I better hurry because the doors are about to be closed. I got to Westminster Hall side entrance and there were two guys closing these huge doors and as doors were moving I asked about getting in and the door kept moving and the doors closed but right away one door opened a little for me to squeeze in, they were good enough to open the door for me. Estimated one million people paid their respects to Winston Churchill. The beauty about London you can pick to live in many good areas and have access to the tube(underground) the easiest underground to get around in the world. I lived in Earl's Court ...
