A close look behind the scenes, between late March and mid-October, 2008: we follow Richard Fuld's benighted attempt to save Lehman Brothers; conversations among Hank Paulson (the Secretary of the Treasury), Ben Bernanke (chair of the Federal Reserve), and Tim Geithner (president of the New York Fed) as they seek a private solution for Lehman's; and, back-channel negotiations among Paulson, Warren Buffet, investment bankers, a British regulator, and members of Congress as almost all work to save the U.S. economy. By the end, with the no-strings bailout arranged, modest confidence restored on Wall Street, and a meltdown averted, Paulson wonders if banks will lend.

The depression may have started because of a stock market crash, but what hit the general economy was a disruption of credit. Average citizens unable to borrow money, to do anything. To buy a home, start a business, stock their shelves. Credit has the ability to build a modern economy, but lack of credit has the ability to destroy it, swiftly and absolutely. If we do not act, boldly and immediately, we will replay the depression of the 1930s, only this time it will be far, far worse. We don't do this now, we won't have an economy on Monday.

Ben Bernanke: I don't really understand why there needs to be so much tension about this. The country is facing the worst economy since the Great Depression. If the financial system collapses, it will take every one of you down.

9/12/13 - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on Thursday said that efforts by tea party-backed Republicans in the Senate to use an energy efficiency bill to defund Obamacare was evidence that "anarchist have taken over" Congress. In a speech on the Senate floor, Reid said that some senators had attempted to derail the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act with unrelated amendments. "The anarchist have taken have taken over," the Nevada Democrat observed, throwing up his hands. "They've taken over the House, now they're here in the Senate." "We're in a position here where people who don't believe in government — and that's what the tea party is all about — are winning, and that's a shame." Reid pointed out that Republicans had not allowed a single amendment to be offered that had anything to do with energy. In fact, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) had vowed to block every amendment until his measure to exempt lawmakers from the health care reform law came up for a vote. "As the fiscal year comes to an end, I guess that's what it's all about," Reid noted. "You do what we want, get rid of Obamacare or we're not going to fund the government." "Where are we? Where we have been this whole year. And what have we accomplished? Not much."

"Understand that there's an anarchy movement that's afoot... But we're not going to bow to tea party anarchists who deny the mere fact that Obamacare is the law. We will not bow to tea party anarchists who refuse to accept the Supreme Court rule that Obamacare be constitutional. And we will not bow to tea party anarchists in the House or in the Senate who ignore the fact that President Obama was overwhelmingly re-elected a few months ago." "This week the Senate will act as quickly as tea party Republicans will allow," he continued. "Once the Senate has acted, House Republicans will face a choice of whether to pass a clean continuing resolution or shut down the federal government. Reid pointed out one Republican senator had called the idea of a government shutdown to defund Obamacare "the dumbest idea he's ever heard." "Two dozen Senate Republicans have spoken out against this foolhardy plan to to drive the economy off the cliff," he said. "This 'Thelma & Louise' style just isn't getting the attention of the American people in a positive tone." "If Democrats don't bow to every demand they have, they want to go right over the cliff." In his opening "Talking Points Memo" Thursday night, Bill O'Reilly updated his viewers on the state of the government shutdown and the fight over the Affordable Care Act. The host had some particularly harsh words for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who he called a "cold-hearted fanatic" for comments he made about funding for the National Institutes of Health Wednesday. But O'Reilly began by comparing Obamacare to an innocent high school dance that ends up getting crashed by a "vicious motorcycle gang." While before, he said, we did not know what the "unintended consequences" would be, not that we are seeing jobs being cut and premiums going up, Republicans are obligated to step in and try to stop the law from being implemented. But it was comments by Reid at a press conference about the shutdown that really got O'Reilly riled up. On Wednesday, CNN's Dana Bash asked Reid why he wouldn't want to fund the National Institutes of Health if it could save one child from dying of cancer. "Why would we want to do that?" Reid asked, before explaining that he does not want to let Republicans determine which parts of the government should be funded. "Reid gets away with that nonsense because hard news reporters have to be somewhat respectful," O'Reilly said. "But I don't. Senator Reid revealed himself in that exchange to be a cold-hearted fanatic, a man who couldn't care less about compromise or the suffering of Americans." From there, he argued that Democrats don't actually care if Americans get better health care, saying, "It's all about ideology." But he seemed to argue that Republicans should stop fighting and wait and see how it plays out. One year from now, he said, "we will know if Obamacare is best for the majority of Americans. If it is, it will take deep root and the president will be hailed a champion. If it is not best for the people, then it should be repealed." His suggestion was that President Obama should delay the individual mandate for a year, a move that is popular among Republicans but would likely undermine financial stability of the system.

Just as Republican leaders were exiting their meeting with President Obama at the White House Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was entering CNN's Crossfire, where he had to contend with Van Jones and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), without too much help from Newt Gingrich. Now that House Republicans are prepared to move forward with a short-term debt deal that doesn't touch the Affordable Care Act, Jones asked Cruz, "Do you feel like you owe your party an apology?" Jones noted that the Republican Party has become incredibly unpopular under Cruz's "leadership," saying that since the Texas senator entered office in January he's become "the most prominent Republican in this town." After stressing that "we're all friends here," Jones asked Cruz: "Do you feel like you owe your party an apology? Listen, you have people who believed in you, they believed that you were somehow going to be able to defund Obamacare, they believed the strategy of shutdown might have a chance. They followed you into a ditch. And now, there's obviously there's no chance Obamacare will be defunded and we're on the brink of a horrific default. Do you think that in the reflection of your own heart, you might say, 'You know what? I'm a new kid here, I think I owe you an apology'?" Cruz laughed at first before getting more serious and asking some questions of his own. "I know you desperately want to change the topic from Obamacare," he said. "Democrats in this town do not want to discuss Obamacare. Why? Because it isn't working." He then turned to focus on negative polling numbers for President Obama and Democrats, crediting House Republicans who are "listening to the millions of Americans who are losing their jobs, who are being pushed into part-time work, who are facing skyrocketing health care." When Sen. Whitehouse got a chance to chime in, he called the "notion that Obamacare is a failure" a "product of right-wing histrionics." He told stories about how well he believes the exchanges are going so far in his home state. "The Republican Party decided that Obamacare was going to be a failure early on, before Obamacare was even decided," Whitehouse said. "It was a political choice to pull all support for anything this president wanted to do. Now they have to live with it, so they have to maintain the story line. But I have to tell you Senator Cruz, I don't see it at home, I don't believe it."

Washington (CNN) -- In an interview with CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accused House Speaker John Boehner of being more worried about his job than the country amid a government shutdown. The Nevada Democrat also talked for the first time Thursday about Boehner reneging on an agreement between the two over a "clean" spending bill, and admitted he directed his chief of staff to leak embarrassing e-mails that they say indicate Boehner changed his position on Obamacare subsidies for Congress. In the interview, Reid criticized Boehner for bowing to a conservative faction of his caucus that insists on attaching anti-Obamacare provisions to a temporary spending bill needed to fund the government. "His job is not as important as our country," Reid said. "I say to my friend John Boehner--and I do like him, I've said that lots of times--John, if you want to really have history books account who you really are, do this," he said, urging Boehner to take up the clean bill. "He has to have some courage," he added. "That was really hard," Reid said, referring his decision to drop $70 billion. "My caucus really didn't like that. We took a real hit." Asked if Boehner at the time promised to deliver a clean continuing resolution, Reid said: "That's why we did it. That's why we agreed to that lower number. So that's one of the largest compromises since I've been in Congress." Reid, who's been known to use explosive terms to describe the tea party, defended his choice of words, especially when he calls them "anarchists." "Why in the world wouldn't I use the term anarchy? That's what they are, they're anarchists," he said. "They don't believe in government at any level. That's why we have members of Congress over there today and yesterday saying finally, we're able to close the government." He conceded that calling them "the weird caucus," as he's previously done, was "probably a little over the hill," but said he won't give up on referring to them as anarchists. "There's no better description I can make," he said. "They're not blowing up buildings and they're not killing people. But they're throwing much - monkey wrenches in the wheels of government." On Wednesday, Bash asked Reid at a press conference why he would refuse to pass a bill to fund the NIH's clinical trials, which have stopped amid the shutdown. He reiterated his stance against funding the government piece by piece. "Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting at home. They have a few problems of their own," he said. "To have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing means you're as irresponsible and reckless." Republicans quickly seized on his answer, using it to paint the Democrat as uncaring and insensitive. While Reid admitted he was not articulate in his answer, he said the attacks that followed were "mean-spirited." "I understand babies who are sick. I've got a lot of children, lots of grandchildren. I really worry about kids, probably more than others because those little bodies can't take the assaults that we as older people can take," he said. Reid also commented on why his staff leaked a series of e-mails between his office and Boehner's, which, according to Reid's office, show Boehner worked privately to preserve health insurance subsidies for lawmakers and congressional employees before publicly moving to strip them as part of the standoff over government funding. "He was behind this all the way," Reid said. "I did a lot of the heavy lifting, but he was part of the deal. He was there. And then to have him come and try to say, 'this is bad, Congress is getting something others aren't getting,' it's not true. ... I thought, how could you do that?" Democrats argue the federal support is no different than what large companies give their employees. "I told my staff, 'You tell his staff, if they do this, I'm going to have to go public, because this is something that is just absolutely wrong,'" he said. A spokesman for Boehner denied Tuesday the speaker was working with the Democrats to find a legislative fix for the subsidies, outside of repealing Obamacare in its entirety and keeping congressional employees on their existing health plans. "The speaker's position is clear: He voted against Obamacare, and he wants to repeal Obamacare. If the Senate Democrats and the White House wanted to make a 'fix' to the law, it would be their fix. The speaker's 'fix' is repeal," said spokesman Michael Steel. "This is just a desperate act by Harry Reid's staff to protect their own subsidy."
