Paula Byrne, Lady Bate, (born 1967), is a British author and biographer who wrote Perdita: The Life of Mary Robinson and Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brideshead. Her debut book was the study of Jane Austen, Jane Austen and the Theatre, which was published in 2002 by Hambledon, shortlisted for the Theatre Book Prize and later reissued by Bloomsbury. Byrne comes from a large working-class family in Birkenhead, studied at the University of Chichester, and has a PhD from the University of Liverpool.
In 2005 her biography Perdita: The Life of Mary Robinson was featured on the Richard & Judy Book Club on Channel 4, propelling it into the Sunday Times bestseller list. It was long listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize and contributed to a revival of interest in Robinson's work.
Her book Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brideshead was published by HarperPress in the UK in August 2009 and HarperCollins New York in the USA in April 2010. An excerpt was published in the Sunday Times of August 9 under the headline Sex scandal behind Brideshead Revisited. An illustrated extract appeared in the April 2010 issue of Vanity Fair in advance of American publication. The book's sympathetic view of Waugh's character contrasted with the popular image of him.

Oh, what your doin' to this town?
Don't you know that everybody here
Wants to be like you
All of your adoring fans
Sittin' in the seats and stands
Listening to every word you say
And watchin' every move
Once I saw a sign that said
'Billy Brown for President'
(It ain't easy)
Bein' a star
(It ain't easy)
To be who you are
(It ain't easy)
But you're goin' far
Well, you say, "There's nothin' to it"
But somebody's gotta do it, boy
Superstar Billy Brown
Stop and listen to the crowd
Everywhere you go
Well everybody's screaming out your name
Do they know the reason why
You point your finger to the skies?
(It ain't easy)
Bein' a star
(It ain't easy)
To be who you are
(It ain't easy)
But you're goin' far
Well, you say, "There's nothin' to it"
But somebody's gotta do it, boy
We all are watching and expect
That whatever you're doin' next
Well, it is gonna be the greatest thing
We have ever seen
(It ain't easy)
Bein' a star
(It ain't easy)
To be who you are
(It ain't easy)
But you're goin' far
Well, you say, "There's nothin' to it"
(It ain't easy)
Bein' a star
(It ain't easy)
To be who you are
(It ain't easy)
But you're goin' far
Well, you say, "There's nothin' to it"
(But somebody's gotta do it)
Yea, you say, "There's nothin' to it"
(But somebody's gotta do it)
Well you say, "There's nothin' to it"
