Fresh election may decide WA Senate result

There are calls for a fresh election to be held to resolve the West Australian Senate result, following revelations that nearly 1,400 votes have gone missing.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has asked former Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty to investigate the "serious administrative issue", after revealing on Thursday 1,375 votes, which had been verified during the initial count, could not be "located, rechecked or verified in the recount process".

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon says if the ballots are not found, voters should go back to the polls.

"It will cost a lot of money, but there is no choice," he said.
