Music Sans Frontieres is a welcome addition to 3CR’s day music programs. The show features world music ranging from music from cultures that are scarcely represented on the airwaves to the richness of the local world music scene. Interviews with musicians, music from new releases and gig information feature on the program.

While Music Sans Frontieres is one of 3CR’s most recent programs, having gone to air in September last year, presenters Brahim Benhim and Therese Virtue have both had long associations with 3CR.

The program has its roots in The Boite’s World Music Café that went to air at 3CR from the mid ‘80s to the mid ‘90’s. Both Brahim and Therese broadcast during this show at various times. Brahim is also well known at 3CR for his current Moroccan program (Tuesdays 10 –11pm) and for his former 3CR allnighter program Internationally Yours.

After initially broadcasting Music Sans Frontieres on Mondays at noon Brahim and Therese now present a two hourly program (Tuesdays 12 –2pm). They alternate weekly in the role as presenter. As an active musician who speaks and writes songs in Classical Arabic and Arabic dialects, French, Spanish and English, Brahim is well placed to present world music and interview musicians. His recent trips to Morocco enable him to bring new music to Australia and his program heavily features music from the Middle East and Africa.

Therese broadcast a world music show on PBS for 16 years and, with 20 years at The Boite, has a wealth of experience in presenting world music. She sees the role as being an “opportunity to put a bit of the plethora of fabulous local music that is being produced in Australia to air”. She also enjoys presenting overseas world music, “because there is such exquisite music around, and I want other people to hear and enjoy it as much as I do.”

Therese is, “very grateful to return to 3CR, which I do really regard as the home of community radio in Australia. I appreciate the generous invitation to broadcast, I am very grateful for the friendly support that is offered to presenters at the station, I really like the ethos of the place.”

Brahim too talks warmly about his long relationship with 3CR. Despite being offered to fill in for a few world music producers/presenters at other stations, “I just seem to prefer 3CR for its simplicity, the friendliness of the staff and my fellow volunteers”.
