http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Town_Hall www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall.html Sheffield's Town Hall was built considerably later than those of the same period in other industrial centres of Northern England. This seems to have been because of more urgent priorities in the minds of the Sheffield Council at the time. The Council appeared to be more concerned with tackling the many social problems caused by the trebling of Sheffield's population between 1843 and 1893, before erecting a prestige monument to the municipality. Of the 178 designs submitted, that of a Mr. E. W. Mountford was judged to be the best. Mr. F. W. Pomeroy was chosen to carry out and supervise the carving. The building was officially opened on 21st May, 1897 by Queen Victoria. Only four years later, the need for an extension was discussed and Mr. Mountford was instructed to prepare plans for it. Because of lack of sufficient finance and the outbreak of the Great War, it was not until 1923 that an extension materialised. This was to Mr. F. E. P. Edward's plan (the then City Architect). The cost was £115,600, and the extension was opened by The Prince of Wales on 29th May, 1923, twenty-six years after Queen Victoria had performed the original opening ceremony. Wedding, meeting and conference room hire in the Town Hall. www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall/main-entrance.html Main Entrance and Foyer The wrought iron gates were designed by E. W. Mountford and possess a remarkable similarity to some installed at the Old Bailey extensions of 1907, also designed by Mountford and made by the same company, J. W. Singers of Frome, Somerset. An amusing story surrounds the "first opening" of the gates by Queen Victoria, in 1897. Because of her age, The Queen remained in a landau on Pinstone Street. For the opening, the new miracle of electricity was to be employed. Appropriately The Queen turned the key in the special lock handed to her in her carriage. Miraculously, the gates slid open. Everyone present believed electric power was responsible. The truth was the key of the lock switched on a current to light a bulb inside the building. There, strong men were concealed and reacted to the signal by heaving the gates open manually. . The display case is used to display Sheffield Plate and other memorabilia presented to the city at various times and is changed frequently. The two memorial plaques are for lives lost in the South African War and World War I, and the Foundation Stone was laid by the Mayor, Alderman William Johnson Clegg, on October 9th, 1891. The outstanding features are the six large sculptures by Pomeroy depicting virtues suitably captioned - Be just and fear not - Work while it is day for the night cometh - God shall rule and guide our Councils - Better it is to get wisdom than gold - Let all things be done with charity - Strength and temperance shall enforce the law. The Shield is from the cruiser ship "HMS SHEFFIELD", which saw action in World War II. The screen is carved out of oak and bears the Family Arms of the Duke of Norfolk and the Earl Fitzwilliam, both having early connections with Sheffield local government. www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall/coat-of-arms.html The arms were granted to the Sheffield Borough Council on 16th July 1875, and subsequently to the present City Council on 1st September 1977. The lion on the crest is taken from the Arms of the Dukes of Norfolk, lords of the manor of Sheffield; it appeared also in the Arms of the Talbot family, their predecessors in the lordship. The sheaf of arrows was the main motif in the seals of the Burgery of Sheffield and the Twelve Capital Burgesses, the two bodies which bore the brunt of local government in Sheffield before the creation of the Borough. The three wheatsheaves on a green field were probably chosen at the College of Arms as a play upon the name Sheffield which means "the open space by the River Sheaf". The two supporters, Vulcan and Thor, were chosen for their aptness to represent a place whose prosperity is almost entirely founded on the working of metal. Thor on the left, the smith of the Scandinavian gods has his hand resting on a hammer, and Vulcan on the right, the smith of the Greek and Roman gods, is standing in front of an anvil and is holding a pair of pincers. The motto (Deo Adjuvante Labor Proficit) may be roughly translated as "With God's help our labour is successful". www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall/main-entrance-hall.html- published: 14 Dec 2013

The Girl With Stories In Her Hair
‘The Girl With Stories In Her Hair’ was my final student film at Central St Martins. It was made in collaboration with the National Gallery Education department, as part of a commissioned programme called ‘Transitions’, where we were asked to choose a painting from the permanent collection as inspiration for our final films. I chose Edgar Degas’ La Coiffure and focused on the contradictive nature of Degas’ voyeuristic, misogynistic manner through which the painting was conceived, juxtaposed with the conveyed warmth and intimacy of the painting itself, and also memories of my mother combing my hair as a child.

Gregory Hayman - I Love You Like Salt
This piece takes as its premise the quote from a number of fairy tales which are common in many countries which show how the good hearted daughter refuses to flatter her father when he asks his daughters in turn how much they love him. The most honest states ‘she loves him like salt’. I.e. in ancient times salt was highly prized, in fact, salt is what Roman soldiers were paid in and led to our word salary – (from salt) and our unit for currency.
The tale formed the basis for Shakespeare’s King Lear. The honest daughter Cordelia is banished and the evil flattering ones rewarded. Lear later comes to rue his folly and this leads to his down fall – and the death of Cordelia.
I want the words ‘I love you like salt’ to be written in salt at the water’s edge – when the tide is low so that the incoming tide will engulf them and the words erased – claimed by the sea and the material consumed and returned from whence it came – the sea.
I want this to illustrate the redemptive and cleansing powers of the sea and to show that love can reach out across the world but can be easily destroyed and all trace of it removed.
Instructions:
Buy salt in NZ. Take to the beach and when tide is low write the words: ‘I love you like salt’ with the salt on the beach.
Photograph and then film or photograph the words as they are reclaimed and erased.
Post the images/film on the internet and circulate via social networks the link with these instructions and the narratives below.
To Love My Father All
William Shakespeare
Lear
Which of you shall we say doth love us most?
That we our largest bounty may extend
Where nature doth with merit challenge. Goneril,
Our eldest-born, speak first.
Goneril
Sir, I love you more than words can wield the matter,
Dearer than eye-sight, space and liberty,
Beyond what can be valued, rich or rare,
No less than life, with grace, health, beauty, honour,
As much as child e'er loved or father found;
A love that makes breath poor and speech unable;
Beyond all manner of so much I love you.
...
Regan
I am made of that self metal as my sister,
And prize me at her worth. In my true heart
I find she names my very deed of love;
Only she comes too short: that I profess
Myself an enemy to all other joys
Which the most precious square of sense possesses,
And find I am alone felicitate
In your dear highness' love
...
Cordelia
I cannot heave
My heart into my mouth: I love your majesty
According to my bond; nor more nor less.
Lear
How, how, Cordelia! mend your speech a little,
Lest it may mar your fortunes.
Cordelia
Good my lord,
You have begot me, bred me, loved me: I
Return those duties back as are right fit,
Obey you, love you, and most honour you.
Why have my sisters husbands, if they say
They love you all? Haply, when I shall wed,
That lord whose hand must take my plight shall carry
Half my love with him half my care and duty:
Sure, I shall never marry like my sister,
To love my father all.

Cap o' Rushes
England
Well, there was once a very rich gentleman, and he'd three darters [daughters]. And he thought to see how fond they was of him. So he says to the first, "How much do you love me, my dear?"
"Why," says she, "as I love my life."
"That's good," says he. So he says to the second, "How much do you love me, my dear?"
"Why," says she, "better nor all the world."
"That's good," says he.
So he says to the third, "How much do you love me, my dear?"
"Why," she says, "I love you as fresh meat loves salt," says she.
Well, he were that angry. "You don't love me at all," says he, "and in my house you stay no more." So he drove her out there and then, and shut the door in her face.
Well, she went away, on and on, till she came to a fen. And there she gathered a lot of rushes, and made them into a cloak kind o', with a hood to cover her from head to foot, and to hide her fine clothes. And then she went on and on till she came to a great house.
"Do you want a maid?" says she.
"No, we don't," says they.
"I hain't nowhere to go," says she, "and I'd ask no wages, and do any sort o' work," says she.
"Well," says they, "if you like to wash the pots and scrape the saucepans, you may stay," says they.
So she stayed there, and washed the pots and scraped the saucepans, and did all the dirty work. And because she gave no name, they called her Cap o' Rushes.
Well, one day there was to be a great dance a little way off, and the servants was let go and look at the grand people. Cap o' Rushes said she was too tired to go, so she stayed at home.
But when they was gone, she o

Moving without walking. A study of human movement through time-lapse photography. Sheffield, UK
Here is my latest video "Moving without walking". A study of human movement through time-lapse photography.
I hope you enjoy this short entertaining video which I recorded last weekend.
For those interested in the technical stuff please read on as I'm sure it will answer all of your questions about this video.....
I shot this from my hotel window, which overlooked the Peace Gardens in Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK. I had to zoom in quite a way in order to cover the actual Peace Garden area, this seemed to be the most active area.
I actually left this setup running for over 5 hours while I was out at the Crucible Theatre watching John Simm and John Nettles perform Hamlet.
In that time it has captured over 29,000 photographs!, Of these only about 8000 were used for this video as the rest were too dark due to the fixed exposure.
Filming Location:
The Peace Gardens are located in the City of Sheffield in Yorkshire, UK.
They are adjacent to Sheffield Town Hall, off Pinstone Street.
The Peace Gardens is an award winning public space near the Winter Gardens.
In the centre is the Goodwin Fountain which has 89 individual jets of water. It has eight cascades located on both sides of the four entrance steps down to the Peace Gardens.
Equipment :
The camera I used was a modified Canon Ixus 430 which I bought for £30 from ebay, My modification allows continuous shooting until the Compact Flash card is full.
The timing between shots is determined by a combibation of image size, card write time and image complexity. With my particular settings the time between shots was about a second.
The photographs were taken at a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels.
The exposure for all the photographs is fixed by the very first shot which is why the video gradually gets darker and darker. If I had used remote software capture to take my photograph using software such as Psremote then the exposure would be evaluated on each individual photograph, unfortunately I could not get Psremote to run under Windows7.
In this video all frames had a 1/13th second exposure time.
Software Processing:
All of the photographs had to be resized and cropped down to 16:9 aspect ratio so it matched the resolution for HD video (1280 x 720 pixels). I achieved this using the batch process function with recorded scripting in Paint Shop Pro v12 as described in great detail in my blog post :
http://derbyphotoscouk.blogspot.com/2009/10/script-recording-and-batch-processing.html
The video was created using Sony Vegas Pro 9c (64bit version on Windows7).
I used the "Still Image sequence" option in the bottom left panel of the Import Media panel. In preferences the "still image duration" set to 0.04 Seconds (i.e. 25fps)
The nice photograph of the Winter Gardens at 3:35 is one of a set that I took using my Olympus 5050 camera while experimenting with exposure times.
Music:
The music I have selected for my video is used under Creative Commons Licence and is Computer by DoKashiteru. He creates some outstanding music with real catchy melodies. See all his work here:
