Basic English vocabulary for restaurants
Basic English vocabulary for restaurants
http://www.engvid.com/ Eating in a restaurant can be a fun thing to do with friends, but if you are just learning English all the new words can be confusing. Watch and learn what an "appetizer" is and how to change your "order", and before you know it you will be "fine dining" with the best of them. Take the quiz for this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/basic-english-vocabulary-restaurants/ TRANSCRIPT Party of two, your table is ready, party of two. Okay, and these are your drinks, sir. There you go. Enjoy your meal. Bon appétit! Hi. James, from EngVid. When I'm not making videos, I need to make money, and this lesson, actually, is about restaurants. I used to be a waiter when I was younger, so I've been in many a restaurant, and I know it might be difficult for you when you -- I mean, you're coming to a new country. I'll slow it down for you because this is basic. You're coming to a new country, and you want to enjoy something. You want to have a meal out of your house. You know -- meal, dinner, or lunch or breakfast. And you go to the restaurant and then somebody walks up to you with, "party of", "table of", "And what would you like for appetizers?" "Would you like an app?" "Would you like this?" "Well, how about your main?" "What about this?" No! Please, don't. So let's slow it down. Let's make it basic, so when you enter a restaurant, you can right away know what they're talking about. Now, there're other things -- you know, we don't have everything in here. There are two other videos on restaurants that you can go watch on EngVid, but this is basic. But even if you think, "Oh, I know all this stuff. I'm very good", you might learn a thing or two. Okay? So come watch. So let's start off first. The worm has a drink. One of the first things they're going to come up to you depending -- and see, I don't know if you know this. There's "fine dining", "casual dining", and "fast food". First thing you should know, so where are you going? "Fast food" is like McDonald's, Taco Bell -- [coughs] that's not food -- Taco Bell, Subway -- most of this won't apply, okay? But some of these words, like -- well, we'll get there -- will apply, and I'll let you know. "Casual dining" is like Chili's or Montana's. I mean these are restaurants in the United States and Canada, so don't worry, but it's all similar. It means you can wear something like I'm wearing: jeans -- there you go. I'm getting old. Can't lift that leg up -- or a T-shirt, and it's okay. No one's going to complain, okay? And you can sit down. Not like McDonald's. You can sit down with a knife and fork, and you can eat your dinner. Or -- then you have "fine dining". "Fine dining" is when the people wear what we call "penguin suits". They have a tie and a shirt, and they walk up, and they serve on tables. Okay? But you need a reservation, and it's mucho dinero mis amigos, mucho, mucho dinero. For the rest of you, it's lots of money. "Fine dining" -- "fine" means "expensive", and you usually require a reservation to get a table. So let's just go with casual, because casual is where most can go. Even if you're in a foreign country and there are people who serve tourists, they're going to go mostly to casual, not necessarily fine dining, so I'm sticking with casual, all right? So casual -- McDonald's we know you just walk in. And here's something -- and McDonald people you can thank me. Next time you go, don't watch them and say, "Give me Big Mac. Give me French fries. And that I want." Try to say, "may I" or "can I have". People who work in the service industry -- which is what the restaurant industry is, where they serve you -- they want a little politeness, so try "can I have" and "may I have". You'll be surprised at how much better they serve you or treat you. Now let's go to the board with the worm, who is providing drinks. One of the first things you come in and you come to a restaurant, they might say to you, "party of" or "table for". And you're going to say, "What?" Well, "party of" -- I know you're not like, "Fiesta time, baby! Yeah, we're going to party, going to be drinking" -- no. What they mean is you are a group of people, and how many are in the group. So "party of two" or "party of four" means there are two -- you can say, "There are two in my party" or four. "There are two of us", or "there are four of us", or ten, okay? Then it's a "partay". It's not a "party"; it's a "partay". Now, "table of" means the same thing, or "table for", "table for". And they mean, for -- I did a video where I talked about "for" means "receive". Go look at it. "For" means "to receive", so "table for four people", so "table for four", "table for five" -- this is four. How many people? That's easy. And that's when they're sitting in the front. That's the first thing they will ask you. Then they will bring you to your table. And they're going to give you something called a "menu".- published: 27 Sep 2013

Lukmaan - One of the Best Restaurants in Zanzibar
Lukmaan - One of the Best Restaurants in Zanzibar
One of the best restaurants in all of Zanzibar is Lukmaan restaurant. Click here to see the details (and more juicy photos): http://migrationology.com/?p=16520 I've been to Zanzibar quite a few times now, and everytime I get off the ferry or get off the plan, I head straight to Lukmaan restaurant for lunch. In my opinion, they serve some of the best local Zanzibar food available. The restaurant has changed a number of times, as in, before they had a menu where you sat down, ordered, and then your food was delivered to your table. But this latest time when I went to Lukmaan, they had arranged the restaurant more of a buffet style, but where you pointed to the dishes you want and the server will dish it. You then pay for your meal and then find a seat. There's both indoor and a few tables outdoors as well along the street. Lukmaan restaurant serves excellent local Zanzibari food. There's always a mouthwatering selection of curries available, many of them being seafood and coconut milk based. Zanzibari food is an amazing blend of local African, Indian, and Arab flavors all combined into tasty flavorsome cuisine. My eyes fell directly onto the orange octopus curry. I also ordered a bowl of African style beans, and a plate of both pilau rice and biryani rice with fish. Pilau rice is a spiced rice that's very common to eat in Zanzibar. Biryani is also a spiced rice, but it's more of a sweet spice and it's paired with a separately cooked sauce that's packed with spices and oil. Both are good, but biryani is really a meal in and of itself, while pilau tastes good with curries, such as the octopus curry that I ordered. Just as I had remembered from my previous visit to Stone Town, Zanzibar, Lukmaan restaurant delivered some seriously tasty local food. Both the pilau and the fish biryani were excellent, but the true winner of this meal was the octopus curry. First of all, the octopus was wonderfully tender. I almost couldn't believe how tender it was, it almost had the consistency of a chicken breast, but a bit more chewy as octopus should be. The curry sauce was a blend of coconut milk, spices, and a squeeze of lime juice to sour things up. Bites of the octopus curry along with the spice riddled pilau rice was marvelous. Lukmaan restaurant, in my opinion, is one of the best restaurants in Zanzibar! Open hours: about 7 am - 9 pm daily, lunch is a great time to go Prices: Most meals cost around 5,000 TZS ($3) per person, but we ate a lot and had a bottle of water as well and our bill came to 12,000 TZS ($7.26). How to get there: Just like in all of Stone Town, getting there is the confusing part. Sometimes you've got to walk around in circles, asking locals along the way, until you get there. The restaurant is located along New Mkunazini Road, just outside of the Stone Town lanes, and right behind the Anglican Cathedral and former slave chamber. Barbecue House - Best Restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Barbecue House - Best Restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
In Tanzania, the grill does not refer to the barbecue; If you want grilled meat, you go to a barbecue (BBQ) restaurant, and Barbecue House is one of the best restaurants in Dar Es Salaam. Get the details here - http://migrationology.com/?p=16478 Nearly every time I fly into Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, one of the first dinners we eat is at Barbecue House, they serve consistently delicious food. The long standing restaurants located in the Upanga area of town has stood the test of time, offering up local Tanzanian barbecue favorites for years and years now. In the daytime, the restaurant appears to be nothing more than a residential home. But beginning at about 5 pm of so, the barbecue grills are rolled out to the front, the gates open, and some tables are placed outside along the sidewalk. Located just a few blocks for the sea, Barbecue House gets a nice nightly breeze that cools one off when you're eating marvelous food. Ok, so now on to the food at Barbecue House restaurant in Dar Es Salaam. One of the most popular items on the menu is their barbecue chicken. It's similar to an Indian tandoori chicken, marinated in an assortment of red spices and colorings, but instead of being cooked in a clay tandoor oven, the chicken is instead cooked over hot charcoal. But first things first, one of the best reasons to go to this restaurant is to first eat the cabbage salad which they served. Now the cabbage is nothing out of ordinary, it's just thinly sliced cabbage. But the best part about it is the incredible array of sauces that they serve at Barbecue House. There's a green chili sauce, a red chili sauce, a sweet and sour tamarind sauce, and my all time favorite, the fresh coconut chutney. Also for starters, I normally get a plate of hot samosas, served with either vegetables or meat or chicken inside. Their samosas are excellent, but again, it's all about that coconut chutney on top that really makes it unbelievably spectacular. For main course, we ordered barbecue chicken, the spicy version. It was pleasantly spicy, cooked to perfection and nice and juicy. I also decided to order a piece of fish, a nice chunk that I believe was red snapper. The fish was marinated in the same red goodness and then placed over the barbecue. To complete the meal, there are both chips (French fries) or a bread known as ajam to order. It's kind of like a naan, but it's a little more on the spongy side - kind of like a pancake. It's first fried in a pan and then placed on the barbecue to gain that extra smoky flavor. Barbecue House is one of my best restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and it's must visit when you go to Tanzania. Enjoy!
