Toronto1960-11
This film is my ode to Toronto 1960s architectural heritage. Shot in 2011, this movie celebrates my city's mid-century treasures.
When Toronto's historical architecture is discussed, Victorian and Georgian periods figure prominently but not the mid-century. In fact, some great examples have fallen to the wrecking ball.
I hope my movie will inspire more conservation and appreciation of this great era.

Amanda Vickery: At Home with the Georgians
In At Home With The Georgians, Amanda Vickery, prize-winning author and professor of modern British history at Royal Holloway, sets her sights on the Georgian era – the golden age of homemaking – as she traces the story of the unique relationship Britons enjoy with their homes, arguing that the Georgians' preoccupation with décor helped to redefine the part played by men and women in British society.

Morris-Jumel Mansion
http://www.historichousetrust.org/item.php?i_id=20
Perched on a commanding rise with spectacular vistas south across Manhattan and east toward Long Island, Morris Jumel Mansion was built as a country retreat by Rodger and Mary Morris in 1765.
During the decade before the Revolutionary War, the Georgian house, with its monumental portico and octagonal drawing room, was the setting for some of the colony’s most fashionable parties.
In the fall of 1776, the Mansion was seized by the Continental Army and served as headquarters for George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights. British and Hessian commanders occupied the house after Washington’s retreat from New York.
In the summer of 1790, Washington returned to the Mansion and dined with the members of his cabinet. Among those at the table were Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Henry Knox.
In 1810, wealthy French wine merchant Stephen Jumel and his American wife, Eliza, purchased the Mansion, and spared no expense refurbishing it. In 1828, they returned from Paris with crates of furniture and paintings, much of which they claimed had belonged to Napoleon. A year after Stephen Jumel died in 1832, his widow married former vice president Aaron Burr. The marriage ended quickly and Eliza lived alone in the house until her death in 1865.
Opened as Washington’s Headquarters by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1904, the Mansion has served as a museum for more than a century. Today, the Mansion features restored period rooms from the Morris, Washington, and Jumel eras.
Morris-Jumel Mansion is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, operated by Morris-Jumel Mansion Inc., and is a member of the Historic House Trust.

SS Keewatin film trailer
This one hour documentary is the story of a grand old lady and the three men who saved her and brought her home. To purchase a DVD copy of the film go to: www.keemediagroup.com
HISTORY
The SS Keewatin, affectionately known as the Kee, is a time capsule. Built in Clyde, Scotland in 1907, she’s the last of her kind – a Titanic era luxury passenger liner that once plied the Great Lakes between Port McNicoll, Ontario and what is now Thunder Bay. She helped to open up Canada.
After Canadian Pacific retired her, she sat in a small town marina in Michigan for 45 years, where tourists and locals could take a tour and gaze in wonder. As the decades passed she became a cherished local icon. People began to see her as more than just a ship with first class cabins and dining room, a grand staircase, intricate carved wood paneling and beautiful hand painted glass. She became a living, breathing thing with a heart and soul.
The man who first saved the SS Keewatin from the scrap yard is RJ Peterson, an eccentric American marina owner. But at age 87, RJ now wants to find her a good home. Enter Gil Blutrich, an Israeli developer who restored Toronto’s famed King Edward Hotel. As a result of that experience, Gil became obsessed with Canadian history. He’s now building a residential complex in the Kee’s old home base – Port McNicoll. Since the port closed in 1965, the town’s been dying and both Gil and local residents believe the Kee could help to revive it. The job of actually moving the ship falls to Canadian maritime buff Eric Conroy. At the age of 17, Eric served as a waiter on the Keewatin in her last year of service and remembered her fondly. It was, after all, where he got his first kiss.
On the day the Kee leaves the marina in Michigan, thousands of local residents turn out to wish her a tearful farewell. The success of the journey is in doubt several times. First she stubbornly refuses to leave. Then she hits a sandbar. Out on the Great Lakes, she must survive a storm.
As Honourary Captain Eric Conroy brings her home, there is an almost unbelievable outpouring of celebration. Hundreds of small boats form a flotilla to accompany the Kee to her old home. It’s apparent the residents of Georgian Bay still have a strong connection to their grand old lady.
This film documents a remarkable and emotional Canadian story.

Georgian era
The Georgian era of British history is a period which takes its name from, and is normally defined as spanning the reigns of, the first four Hanoverian kings of Great Britain , who were all named 'George': George I, George II, George III and George IV. The era covers the period from 1714 to 1830, with the sub-period of the Regency defined by the Regency of George IV as Prince of Wales during the illness of his father George III. The last Hanoverian monarch of the UK was William's niece Queen Victoria who is the namesake of the following historical era, the Victorian, which is usually defined as occurring from the start of her reign, when William died, and continuing until her death. The term "Georgian" is typically used in the contexts of social history and architecture. The Arts Georgian society and its preoccupations were well portrayed in the novels of writers such as Henry Fielding, Mary Shelley and Jane Austen, characterised by the architecture of Robert Adam, John Nash and James Wyatt and the emergence of the Gothic Revival style, which hearkened back to a supposed golden age of building design. The flowering of the arts was most vividly shown in the emergence of the Romantic poets, principally through Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Blake, John Keats, Lord Byron and Robert Burns. Their work ushered in a new era of poetry, characterized by vivid and colourful language, evocative of elevating ideas and themes. The paintings of Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds and the young J. M. W. Turner and John Constable illustrated the changing world of the Georgian period - as did the work of designers like Capability Brown, the landscape designer. Religious and social change It was a time of immense social change in Britain, with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution which began the process of intensifying class divisions, and the emergence of rival political parties like the Whigs and Tories. In rural areas the Agricultural Revolution saw huge changes to the movement of people and the decline of small communities, the growth of the cities and the beginnings of an integrated transportation system but, nevertheless, as rural towns and villages declined and work became scarce there was a huge increase in emigration to Canada, the North American colonies (which became the United States during the period) and other parts of the British Empire. Social reform under politicians such as Robert Peel and campaigners like William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson and members of the Clapham Sect began to bring about radical change in areas such as the abolition of slavery, prison reform and social justice. An Evangelical revival was seen in the Church of England with men such as George Whitefield, John Wesley (later to found the Methodists), Charles Wesley, Griffith Jones, Howell Harris, Daniel Rowland, William Cowper, John Newton, Thomas Scott, and Charles Simeon. It also saw the rise of Non-conformists and various Dissenting groups such as the Reformed Baptists with John Gill, Augustus Toplady, John Fawcett, and William Carey. Philanthropists and writers such as Hannah More, Thomas Coram, Robert Raikes and Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London, began to address the social ills of the day, and saw the founding of hospitals, Sunday schools and orphanages. Fine examples of distinctive Georgian architecture are Edinburgh's New Town, Bath, Georgian Dublin, Grainger Town in Newcastle Upon Tyne as well as Bristol. Empire The Georgian era was moreover a time of British expansion throughout the world. There was continual warfare, including the Seven Years War, known in America as the French and Indian War (1756-1763), American Revolution (1775-1783), the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). The British won all the wars except for the American Revolution, where the combined weight of the United States, France, Spain and the Netherlands overwhelmed Britain, which stood alone without allies.
