The social data revolution is the shift in human communication patterns towards increased personal information sharing and its related implications, made possible by the rise of social networks in early 2000s. While social networks were used in the early days to privately share photos and private messages, the subsequent trend towards people actively and passively sharing personal information more broadly has resulted in unprecedented amounts of public data.^[1]

This large and frequently updated data source has been described as a new type of scientific instrument for the social sciences.^[2] Several independent researchers have used social data to "nowcast" and forecast trends such as unemployment, flu outbreaks, travel spending and political opinions in a way that is faster, more accurate and cheaper than standard government reports or Gallup polls.^[2]

Social data refers to data individuals create that is knowingly and voluntarily shared by them. Cost and overhead previously rendered this semi-public form of communication unfeasible, but advances in social networking technology from 2004-2010 has made broader concepts of sharing possible.^[3] The types of data users are sharing include geolocation, medical data,^[4] dating preferences, open thoughts, interesting news articles, etc.

Early examples of social data are Craigslist and the wishlists of Amazon.com. Both enable users to communicate information to anybody who is looking for it. They differ in their approach to identity. Craigslist leverages the power of anonymity, while Amazon.com leverages the power of persistent identity, based on the history of the customer with the firm. The job market is even being shaped by the information people share about themselves on sites like LinkedIn and Facebook.^[5]

Examples of more mature social data are Twitter and Facebook. On Twitter, sending a message or tweet is as simple as sending an SMS text message. Twitter made this C2W, customer to world: Any tweet a users sends can potentially be read by the entire world. Facebook focuses on interactions between friends, C2C in traditional language. It provides many ways for collecting data from its users: “tag” a friend in a photo, “comment” on what they posted, or just “like” it. These data are the basis for sophisticated models of the relationships between users. They can be used to significantly increase the relevance of what is shown to the user, and for advertising purposes.^[6]

Craig Alexander Newmark (born 6 December 1952) is an Internet entrepreneur best known for being the founder of the San Francisco-based international website Craigslist.

Biography[link]

Newmark was born in Morristown, New Jersey and graduated from Morristown High School, in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1971. He is Jewish.^[1][2] Upon graduation he attended college at Case Western Reserve University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and a Master of Science degree in 1977.^[3]

Newmark is a vocal advocate of keeping the Internet free. In 2006 he donated $10,000 to a non-profit group, NewAssignment.Net, which plans to combine the work of amateurs and professionals to produce investigative stories on the Internet.^[4]

Newmark resides in San Francisco's Cole Valley and is active at Craigslist in customer service, mostly dealing with spammers and scammers.^[5] In 2009, he became a member of the Wikimedia Foundation advisory board, is a member of the New America Foundation Leadership Council^[6] and serves on the board of the Sunlight Foundation. In 2009, Newmark was named an honorary patron of the University Philosophical Society of Trinity College, Dublin along with Matt Mullenweg. In 2012, Newmark was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame by the Internet Society.^[7]

Jeremy Carr is a soulful singer-songwriter with a love for all music. The diverse entertainer has releases in House, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and Pop Punk Music.

His success began in 2007 with sudden chart success in The Netherlands with two singles "Turn The Lights Off" (11 weeks on Dutch Top 40, peaking at #11) ^[1] and "Physical Attraction" (3 weeks on Dutch Top 40, peaking at #32) ^[2] both released by DJ Jose.

In 2008 after becoming a Billboard Global Dance Tracks Top-40 Hit, "Deep At Night" was released in The United States by Nervous Records where it became a Billboard Top-10 Hit. In 2009, "Deep At Night" was nominated "Best Progressive House/Trance Track" at the Dance Music Awards (DMAs) in Miami, Florida. The song was featured on Germany's Next Top Model.

In late 2008/2009 "Sexy Girl" became a hit in Spain peaking at #20 on the Spanish Singles Chart) ^[3] and Hungary where it was a dance hit.

Early in 2010, Jeremy began his collaboration with Danish Producer/DJ DJ Kato. They connected after Kato covered "Turn The Lights Off" in Scandinavia where it was a chart hit (23 weeks on Tracklisten (the Danish Singles Chart), peaking at #4 and Sverigetopplistan (the Swedish Singles Chart), peaking at #6).^[4] Jeremy took a trip to Aarhus, Denmark and spent a long weekend at Studio Panic which yielded some great work between the duo and producer, Ahmad Darwich. Jeremy made a number of trips back to Scandinavia during the summer of 2010 where he performed live with Kato at some of the best clubs in Denmark and Sweden as well as appearing on radio shows including Radio ABC, NRJ and VOICE.

In 2011 both "Celebrate Life" and "Happiness" were released on Kato's album Discolized 2.0 on Discowax which went gold within weeks of release. "Celebrate Life" reached #9 on The Danish Singles Chart.^[5] Also in 2011 the collaboration between Jeremy and Belgian producer/DJ Sunfreakz was released in Europe on Little Julian (a division of N.E.W.S.), the United States on Napith Music and Canada on KooKoo (a division of Unidisc). In addition to touring in The United States and Europe; Jeremy spends most free moments at New York's Stadium Red studios where he's written and recorded most of his music. His latest project, "Live Forever" is a collaboration with Vittrup from Scandinavia. The record was release on February 13th and became a Danish Hit reaching the #19 position on The Danish Top-20 Chart by February 24th 2012. Additionally, the solo project, "Just One Breath" will be released for spring/summer 2012.

Reid Garrett Hoffman^[4] (born August 5, 1967) is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist and author. Hoffman is best known as the co-founder of LinkedIn, a social network used primarily for business connections and job searching.

Early education and career[link]

Hoffman was born in Stanford, California, the son of Deanna Ruth Rutter and William Parker Hoffman, Jr.,^[5][6] and grew up in Berkeley, California. His paternal great-great-great-grandfather was Presbyterian minister and Indiana University president pro tempore Theophilus Adam Wylie.^[6] He attended high school at The Putney School.^[7] He graduated from Stanford University in 1990 (where he won both a Marshall Scholarship and a Dinkelspiel Award) with a B.S. in Symbolic Systems and Cognitive Science.^[8] He went on to earn an M.A. in philosophy from Oxford University in 1993.

Hoffman says he saw academia as an opportunity to make an "impact", but later realized that an entrepreneurial career would provide him with a bigger platform. "When I graduated from Stanford my plan was to become a professor and public intellectual. That is not about quoting Kant. It's about holding up a lens to society and asking 'who are we?' and 'who should we be, as individuals and a society?' But I realised academics write books that 50 or 60 people read and I wanted more impact."^[9]

So Hoffman pursued a career in business and entrepreneurship. After working at Apple Computer and Fujitsu in product management, Hoffman co-founded his first company, SocialNet.com, an online dating service.

PayPal[link]

While at SocialNet, Hoffman was a member of the board of directors at the founding of PayPal, an electronic money transmission service, and later joined the firm as a full-time employee. At the time of PayPal's acquisition by eBay in 2002, he was Executive Vice President of PayPal. He was responsible for all external relationships for PayPal, including Payments Infrastructure (VISA, MasterCard, ACH, WellsFargo), Business Development (eBay, Intuit, others), Government (Regulatory, Judicial), and Legal.

Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn in December 2002. It was one of the first business-oriented online social networks. He was LinkedIn’s founding CEO for the first four years before becoming Chairman and President, Products in February 2007. Currently he is Executive Chairman. LinkedIn currently has over 135 million members in over 200 countries.^[10] With the IPO of LinkedIn on May 19, 2011, Hoffman owns a stake worth an estimated $2.34 billion dollars, not including any potential benefits from Greylock Partners, where he was named a Partner in 2009.^[11]

After the PayPal sale to eBay, Hoffman became one of Silicon Valley's most prolific and successful angel investors. According to venture capitalist David Sze, Hoffman "is arguably the most successful angel investor in the past decade."^[12] He made 80 angel investments in technology companies. In 2010 Hoffman joined Greylock Partners and runs their $20 million Discovery Fund.^[13]

According to David Kirkpatrick's book The Facebook Effect, Hoffman arranged the first meeting between Mark Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel, which led to Thiel's initial $500,000 angel investment in the company. Hoffman invested alongside Thiel in Facebook's very first financing round.^[14][15]

Zynga[link]

Hoffman personally invested and joined the board of directors in Zynga's first round of funding. Hoffman and Zynga CEO Mark Pincus co-own the Six Degrees Patent.^[16] Zynga is now a publicly traded company with a market capitalization of $8.43 billion as of February 2012. ^[17]
