ON THE JOB: Why Sophie Mirabella MP sacked her staffer

lukebarnes Following our revelations about MP for Indi Sophie Mirabella’s termination of staffer Luke Barnes, many of our Liberal patriot sources have reported in with more news from her office.

Some claim that a specific incident involving Barnes, a ‘turncoat’ staffer from Margaret May’s office and a stationery cupboard three weeks ago was the trigger for Mrs Mirabella’s decision to move Barnes on.

The broad-minded parliamentarian Mirabella’s view was that she didn’t need to see her staff doing private things in a semi-public place, even if the lights were dim. Fair enough.

Sophie’s supporters were also keen to point out that her decision was an entirely valid one that any employer would make in the circumstances and had nothing to do with the homophobia furphy raised by Barnes.

They say her office is a place of harmony and tolerance, with another long-term Mirabella staffer currently travelling in Europe also being gay. Barnes worked for Mirabella for fifteen months, making him her second-longest serving media officer, due to the fast-pace of the dynamic MP’s work-load and exacting requirements that befit a woman of her stature.

  1. This is the curse of conservatives, Andy! Whether it be Lusty Luke, or Tim and his gorgeous Angels, we love too hard and too often.

  5. The women is a complete nut job. Me and my family live in wang and have for ages and she is known throughout the town as a walking nightmare. I was driving once and she cut me off at a roundabout and almost whipped me and me god daughter out! If her driving is any idea of what she is to work for, poor Luke sounds like he is getting out (after 15 months) alive….just! If this Luke guy did in fact do that, and this site isnt usually on the money with things so i really doubt it, but who frickin cares. Do we get to read about avergae joes who pick up? NO. Just because this man works or worked for a Politican Member of Parliament doesnt mean he life has to be sprayed for all these nerds to read. The women is a joke, i feel sorry for Barnes, I bet he is happy to be finally free of having to do sophie’s work of saying no aborginal kid was ever truely stolen….

  6. wern’t Barnes and Barrett a couple, everyone in wangaratta new that. They were open about it at the Albion thats for sure. But hang on, just recently i saw that young Luke blonde dude strutting down the street with Sophie in one of her white vote sophie shirts…so if this so called incident in the stationary room happen weeks ago, all seemed hugs and laughs on Tuesday…in fact everyone in wang had to chake their heads as the ugly old sophie caravan went down the main street with her and some guy (who i think was this luke guy judging by his pick) just days ago, perhaps they were looking for demon babies

  7. broadminded parliamentarian….my goodness, does that include boycotting the apology, climate change is a myth, fraser is a frothing leftie and hah hah Julia Gillard your not pregnant and I am! I sure hope this Luke person doesn’t share her politics, thats why he won get another job, not because he dare do what every other human on the planet has done…maybe this is her Karma for demanding muslim women not be allowed to wear their headscarf, poor Luke sounds like a great person to work for!

  8. maybe Sophie could put her husband on in Barnes’s palce after he lost the job at Wangaratta Jazz Festival that she got him in the first place. I’ve never seen or even heard of this young Luke and I live right in Wangaratta and follow Sophie’s comments and actions very closely, put it this way he will do better without her attached to him….

  13. Biggest swing against a sitting member in Victoria (almost 9% when the National swing to Rudd was 5%)…..and let us not forgot the abatoir 15% swing against her in her home town…..yeah she did great byron

    Posted by deano | May 26, 2009, 14:06
  14. was saying there is no evidence that one aboriginal child was truely stolen a magic moment for you Byron…..my point is if Luke had to write that shit, he is luckey to be outta there….she is a disgrace

    Posted by deano | May 26, 2009, 14:07
  15. What the Barnes guy did compares nothing to callng someone a useless c-word when they work for you, or making fun of peoples speech diction in the parliament or trying to stop an abatoir because the smell will bother your living near by…..VOTE LABOR

    Posted by anonymous | May 26, 2009, 14:14
  16. Maybe Zuevele Lecshan could ask Luke to come work for her when she tries (will probably fail again sadly) to take Sophie’s place as the local parliament member. Im sure after being by her side for 15 months he, like no other, would be able to give a good indication of the terrible person she really is…..lets look out for Luke walking down the main street with a KEVIN10 shirt on. Mirabella should probably be counting her luckey stars that he hasnt come out publically and said anything about her and her violent ways which every in wangaratta and beyond knows about…..this is all hearsay, he probably told his mate, or told someone, who told someone, who told Andrew and now the story is….it could go on forever, if you see this blonde Luke guy, not that he will be popping out of he woodwork much im sure to avoid Sophie’s army, but i bet he says nothing, and stays true to his obvious Liberal beliefs, at least for now

  17. Hey, ‘Deano’ and ‘Anonymous’: ‘abbatoir’ is spelt with a double B.

I’m guessing it’s just a fluke that both of you made the same mistake.

  18. Hey Deano/Anonymous/Arthur Colon Doyle: are you the same local sicko that stalked Sophie online prior to the 2007 campaign?

  21. How’s the weather in Bright, Deano?

Posted by Byron in Wahroonga | May 26, 2009, 16:50
  22. Bright weather is always great and im sure Sophie wouldn’t know how to spell Abbatoir, as long as it didnt effect the price of her house, she couldnt give at rats about the spelling and neither could I. By the way i have no idea who campbell or anonymous is, i dont come on here much, unlike you Byron who for some unknown but socially embarrassing reason monitor this site all day long defending the right wingers of the country

    Posted by deano | May 26, 2009, 21:55
  23. Byron? is that a real name?

    Posted by elephantandrat | May 26, 2009, 21:59
  24. Interesting that the name “Barrett” has been replaced with “long-term Mirabella staffer currently travelling in Europe” don’t tell me this site is starting to be scared of the right wingers who want to sue for revealing hot political gosspip…come on this site is like the hollywood goss, but instead for political nerds

first things first – you need to get your spelling and grammar correct – recall the latest Indi newsletter? Secondly, it must be extremely time consuming and frustrating to have to come up with alias after alias to support your own cause. After all this public attention, one can only imagine the employment (or lack there of) opportunities you will receive – Labor or Liberal. Best of luck.

  26. Sophie, can I please work for you?

    Posted by Ollie | May 26, 2009, 23:24
  27. I withdraw that earlier remark.

If I ever take gainful employment I will put at risk of exposure my rather successful charade that I am so mentally ill that I am unable to ever work again.

  28. How much longer do you think we can drag this out? Short story, someone is not happy. Simply having a bit of a laugh, dragging out a one line story and creating an internet drama. I’ve lost interest.

    Posted by Nick McHugh | May 26, 2009, 23:29
  29. Anonymous,

The Indi newsletter that was recently received by AT LEAST 500 residents of the Indi electorate (but realistically closer to 12,000) was riddled with grammatical, spelling and factual errors. Note: one in particular, “the parliament”. When making reference to a Parliamentary sitting, the correct terminolgy is simply “Parliament”. Eg: “….spoke at Parliament”. It is clear, this faux par has been made yet again, and lo and behold, who was it that made the same error (amongst others) in the abovementioned newsletter?…Oh! Mr. Luke Barnes. Reading between the lines, Mr. Barnes is the sole dictator and only beneficiary behind this lower-than-tabloid-quality, material.

  32. Svetlana,

When being picky about grammar and spelling – you should check your own……..

    faux par????

Surely, it’s always been faux pas?

Clean up your own “lower than tabloid quality material” before you throw stones.

    Posted by Anon | May 27, 2009, 14:51
  33. Surely we can all agree that Sophie is a silly mole. Honestly!

Spelling and typo’s (that is, a slip of the finger on the keyboard) are entirely different.

    Posted by Svetlana | May 27, 2009, 16:30
  35. Correctly French spelling is not permitted on this site of freedom. Take your cheese-eating surrender monkeying ways elsewhere.

  36. Congratulations Luke, you have done well. You managed to get over 50 posts on the two bullshit stories you made up. All of you who are bagging Sophie, member for Indi sice 2001, should give her a break. Her job involves a lot more hard work than any of you anonymous writers job’s would involve. Maybe you should get out their and find a real job where you can help make this region better.

    Posted by Ryan | May 27, 2009, 17:11
  37. now now Ryan your petticoat is showing…..this region would be a lot better off without lots of things but thats not how life is. is it Ryan?
Sophie is a rude person accept it and let go …..

    Posted by elephantandrat | May 27, 2009, 18:15
  38. It could not have been said better, Ryan. Interesting to note, other former employees of Ms Mirabella have not received such attention when their tenure ceased – resignation, termination or otherwise. It appears what we have here, is a disgruntled little upstart, who simply will not be told “no” and (in his eyes), can do no wrong. If it hasn’t been said already, future employment prospects for this young lad seem bleak.

    Posted by Svetlana | May 27, 2009, 18:15
  39. no apostrophe in “typos” either – it’s a plural, not a genitive or a contraction.

Andrew, that hilarious “Surrendering” mock-up poster reminds me of that amusing WW11 joke:

Q: How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?
    A: No idea – they’ve never tried.

    Posted by Vince | May 27, 2009, 19:47
  40. Dear elephantandrat, please stop complaining about what we don’t have and be grateful for what we do have, like a great member for our area in Sophie Mirrabella. You must not know the same Sophie i know as you call her rude. I disagree.

  41. If he really is a fudge-packer send him to the Member for Wentworth’s office haha. Its all about working the right constituency people lol

    Posted by anonski | May 28, 2009, 16:13
  42. Sophie is a person of the highest integrity and unimpeachable moral rectitude. I will not tolerate any blasphemous comments against her good name. No one is perfect but Sophie is a delightfully brilliant articulate and truly humble (given her superlative ability) example of the best in politics. Having adopted the path of conservative values and uncompromising truth, she ought be judged not by her actions but by her inspirational words of hope and freedom. If she were not a woman holding a Victorian country seat and espousing mainstream Australian democratic values, she would be a shoo in for promotion to a really serious shadow cabinet role instead of those duds that Malcontent Turncoat has around him. The way the polls are going, you’d think the Rudd government was running a budget surplus of $60 billion and had economic growth of +4% per annum with 3% unemployment.

Posted by Giuseppe De Simone | May 30, 2009, 21:49
  43. I can’t believe Mirabella’s morals are as pure as some would claim, given her denial of climate change in an electorate devastated by it. The Liberal (Nat who?) COALition couldn’t give a toss about the bush.
