John Letcher (March 29, 1813 – January 26, 1884) was an American lawyer, journalist, and politician. He served as a Representative in the United States Congress, was the 34th Governor of Virginia during the American Civil War, and later served in the Virginia General Assembly. He was also active on the Board of Visitors of Virginia Military Institute.

Childhood, education[link]

John Letcher was born in the town of Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He attended private rural schools and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. In 1833, he was graduated from Washington Academy in Lexington. He studied law was admitted to the Virginia State Bar and opened a practice in Lexington in 1839.

Lawyer, journalist, Congressman[link]

Letcher was editor of the (Shenandoah) Valley Star newspaper from 1840 to 1850. He was active in the presidential campaigns of 1840, 1844, and 1848, serving as Democratic elector in 1848. Although never a true abolitionist, he signed the Ruffner Pamphlet of 1847, which proposed the abolition of slavery in that part of Virginia west of the Blue Ridge Mountains; however, he soon repudiated this antislavery stand. He was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1850.

He was elected as a Democratic candidate and served as a Representative in the United States Congress from 1851–1859. In Congress, he was known as "Honest John" because of his opposition to government extravagance.

American Civil War[link]

John Letcher was elected as Governor of Virginia in 1859, defeating Whig candidate William L. Goggin, and served from 1860–1864. Letcher was prominent in the organization of the peace convention that met in Washington, D.C., February 8, 1861, in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending American Civil War. He discouraged secession, but was active in sustaining the ordinance passed by Virginia on April 17, 1861. Colonel John Brown Baldwin defeated Letcher in May 1863 for a seat in the Second Confederate Congress. In 1864, his home in Lexington was burned by Union troops during General David Hunter's raid.

Postwar: General Assembly, VMI[link]

After the Civil War, Letcher resumed the practice of law in Lexington. He was elected as a member of the House of Delegates in the Virginia General Assembly 1875–1877. He was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) 1866–1880 and served as president of the Board for ten years.

He died on January 26, 1884 at the age of 70, and was interred in the Presbyterian Cemetery (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery) at Lexington, Virginia.

William Grose (December 16, 1812 – July 30, 1900) was a lawyer, politician, author, and brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served in many of the important campaigns and battles of the Western Theater, earning a reputation for being "always seen where the bullets flew thickest."^[1]

Early life and career[link]

Grose was born in Dayton, Ohio, to a family with strong military ties. His father had served in the United States Army under William Henry Harrison against the British Army in the War of 1812 and his grandfather Jacob Grose had been killed in the American Revolution. In the spring of 1813, Grose's family moved to Fayette County, Indiana, and then to Henry County in 1829. He worked as a youth as a farm laborer and in a local brickyard.

Grose studied law in New Castle, Indiana, where he lived the rest of his life. He passed the bar exam in 1842 and established a successful law practice and unsuccessfully ran for the United States Congress in 1852 as a Democrat. Switching political parties, in 1856 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, supporting John C. Fremont's unsuccessful candidacy for President of the United States. He was elected in 1860 as a judge of the local common pleas court.

Civil War[link]

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Grose was appointed colonel of the 36th Indiana Infantry in October 1861, a regiment he recruited and trained. He led the regiment during the Battle of Shiloh, where his horse was shot from under him and he was slightly wounded in the shoulder. Shortly afterwards, he replaced the wounded Brig. Gen. Jacob Ammen in command of a brigade of infantry in the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell. He participated in numerous campaigns and battles, including the pursuit of Braxton Bragg's army in the Kentucky Campaign, having another horse killed at the Battle of Stones River.

In 1863, he fought in the Tullahoma Campaign and the Battle of Chickamauga, where he was wounded in the neck. He and his men performed well during the Chattanooga Campaign in late 1863, taking part in the assault on Lookout Mountain and received praise in the official reports of the battle.

The following year, Grose led his brigade in the Atlanta Campaign under William T. Sherman. During the Siege of Atlanta in July 1864, he was commissioned a brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers. He commanded a brigade in Maj. Gen. Nathan Kimball's division in Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Wood's IV Corps. Grose accompanied the Army of the Tennessee northward in pursuit of John Bell Hood and fought in the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, where Hood's army was virtually destroyed. He was brevetted as a major general in August 1865, while serving on administrative duty on a court-martial of a fellow officer.

Postbellum[link]

Following the war, Grose remained in the Regular Army for a year, and then resigned in January 1866. He returned to New Castle, Indiana, and resumed his law practice. President Andrew Johnson appointed him as the collector of internal revenue taxes for his region, a post he held until 1874.

Interested in social improvement, Grose took a position on the Indiana commission that oversaw the construction of mental hospitals. In 1878, he was narrowly defeated in a bid for a Congressional seat. In 1887, Grose returned to politics, successfully campaigning for a seat in the Indiana State Senate. In 1891, he authored the regimental history of the 36th Indiana Infantry and actively participated in its veterans reunions.

Grose died at the age of 87 in his home in New Castle, Indiana, and was buried in South Mound Cemetery.

The Gen. William Grose House in New Castle is the home of the Henry County Historical Society and open to the public.

John Cleveland (16 June 1613 – 29 April 1658) was an English poet.

The son of an usher in a charity school, Cleveland was born in Loughborough, and educated at Hinckley Grammar School. Admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge, he graduated BA in 1632 and became a fellow of St John's College in 1634.^[1] At St John's Cleveland became college tutor and lecturer on rhetoric, and was much sought after. A staunch Royalist, he opposed the election of Oliver Cromwell as member for Cambridge in the Long Parliament, and lost his college post as a result in 1645. Joining Charles I, by whom he was welcomed, he was appointed to the office of Judge Advocate at Newark. In 1646, however, he lost this office, and wandered about the country dependent on the bounty of the Royalists. In 1655 he was imprisoned at Yarmouth, but released by Cromwell, to whom he appealed, and went to London, where he lived till his death. His best work is satirical, slightly reminiscent of Hudibras; his other poems are considered mediocre. The Poems were published in 1656.

Mötley Crüe[link]

After Mötley Crüe parted ways with lead singer Vince Neil in 1992, Corabi was hired as his replacement. Bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee stated that the band would benefit from the addition of John's voice and having another musician contribute to the songwriting. However, Corabi's voice did not have the same effect as his predecessor which alienated some fans and the record label. Corabi recorded the self-titled Mötley Crüe album in 1994 and the EP Quaternary. Though the music was heavier and more elaborate than the rest of the Mötley Crüe catalog, it did not sell as well as previous releases from the band. During the early stages of the writing of a new album which would become Generation Swine, Mötley Crüe's record label refused to provide funds to record the album unless Vince Neil was let back in the band. Mötley Crüe accepted the request and by 1997 Corabi was replaced by the returning Vince Neil. Many of the songs from the early writing session were used on the album and Corabi is credited on the liner notes for co-writing some of the songs.

Union[link]

Union was formed from recently released musician Bruce Kulick of Kiss, John Corabi, Brent Fitz, and Jamie Hunting. John and Bruce wrote what would become the first Union album (self titled) and proceeded with a nationwide acoustic tour, to promote the album, featuring just Corabi and Kulick (both on guitar). Soon the full band went on a world tour headlining small venues in support of the Union album. The second album "Live in the Galaxy" was a live recording with 2 acoustic tracks recorded in a mobile studio. The third and final Union album, The Blue Room, was a more polished sound than the first studio CD. Union never officially called it quits (playing live shows every so often with guest drummers and bass players), but with Kulick playing along with Grand Funk Railroad, Corabi playing with many bands, most notably Ratt, and both members being tied up in solo projects, Union will probably never return to write new studio material..

ESP (Eric Singer Project)[link]

ESP also featured guitarist Bruce Kulick, bassist Karl Cochran, and drummer Eric Singer. Ace Frehley makes a special appearance on the Hendrix cover Foxy Lady.

Twenty 4 Seven[link]

Twenty 4 Seven, a collaboration with Corabi, drummer Bobby Blotzer (Ratt, Contraband), and guitarist Rob Marcello (Ironhorse, Obsession, Danger Danger) recorded 10 hard rock tracks entitled Destination Everywhere (US, 2002).

Brides of Destruction[link]

Corabi was featured as second guitarist on Brides of Destruction's 2004 album Here Comes The Brides. He had multiple reasons for leaving the band. One was the fact that he was told it would be an effort much like the "Mötley Crüe" album. Secondly, he did not get along very well with Tracii Guns. He also said in an interview that "when Nikki told me about the band, I was really into the idea of writing another CD with the heavy sound of the Mötley Crüe album, but as we got more into recording, we had our drummer singing what was supposed to be the best song on the CD, when Nikki and Tracii were saying that our singer was the hot new thing, it just did not make sense to me."

Other projects[link]

Corabi performed songs on the Karl Cochran solo album Voodooland - Give Me Air released in 2005.

2005 also saw the release of the first Union DVD, Do Your Own Thing Live, containing two full-length concerts.

Union performed in Tokyo, Japan in January, 2005 and toured Europe in November and December 2005.

Corabi toured Europe with ESP in May 2005 and the USA with RATT in summer of 2005.

In February 2006, Corabi returned to Japan with ESP for live appearances and meet-and-greets with fans. ESP also performed in Australia in April 2006 for shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

In late 2006, Corabi played the last show with RATT fronted by Jizzy Pearl in Guadalajara, Mexico before the band reunited with original vocalist Stephen Pearcy.

Corabi contributed vocals on a song for Liberty N' Justice (a Christian group that does all-star rock albums) called "Doubting Thomas." The track was released in 2007 on the "Independence Day" album.

In the Summer of 2007, John toured with reunited RATT while on tour with Poison and Vains of Jenna.

In November 2007 John played 4 shows in Japan and 2 shows in Australia with Ratt while touring with Winger.

In December 2007, John returned to Mexico City with ESP (Eric Singer Project) for one show and meet-and-greets with fans. The set included songs from Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, Kiss and other favorites.

Early in 2008, John Corabi attended the MOTLEY CRUISE, a 4-day cruise in the Caribbean (Miami, Key West and Cozumel, MX) including performers such as Vince Neil, Skid Row, Ratt, Slaughter, Endeverafter and Lynam. On this cruise, Corabi joined Vince Neil on stage to perform "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC. This performance was a unique event as fans witnessed the two Mötley Crüe vocalists share the same microphone. As of August 2008, John Corabi has parted ways with Ratt in order to pursue his solo career.^[1]

Corabi makes a vocal appearance on Bruce Kulick's 2010 release "BK3". He covered "Life" by Siam Shade for the 2010 tribute album, Siam Shade Tribute.

Plans[link]

Corabi plans to release a solo album on Universal in May 2012 called John Corabi Unplugged followed by a tour performing songs from the bands he's worked with throughout his career. He just performed on the first Monsters of Rock cruise in February 2012.

Corabi played three dates, his first as a solo artist, in the Midwest with his new band in early December, 2009. Corabi performed songs from throughout his career, some of which have not been played live since his days with THE SCREAM and MÖTLEY CRÜE. Among the songs performed were "Hooligan's Holiday", "I Don't Care", "Outlaw", "Til Death Do Us Part", "Power To The Music", "Uncle Jack", "Love (I Don't Need It Anymore)", "Shine" and "Father, Mother, Son". A show in Nashville, Tennessee was performed on December 10, 2009 and broadcast on the Internet.^[2]

John Corabi is scheduled to perform in the Octoberfest show at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 1 opening for ex-Gun's & Roses drummer Steven Adler's solo band Adler's Appetite.^[3]

Nathan Kelsey Hall (March 28, 1810 – March 2, 1874) was an American politician who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as U.S. Postmaster General.

Biography[link]

Born in Marcellus, New York, he began his career as a shoemaker and farmer, but then studied law in Buffalo, New York, alongside future U.S. President Millard Fillmore, and later served him as a law clerk and still later as a law partner. After passing the bar examination in 1832, he practiced law and held various elected offices in Buffalo and Erie County, New York. He was elected a member of the New York Legislature in 1846. In 1846 he was elected as Whig to a seat in the 30th Congress, but was not renominated at the end of his term.

In 1850, Fillmore appointed him Postmaster General of the United States. He served from 1850 through 1852, but for a brief stint as acting Secretary of the Interior. He left the office in 1852, when he became a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. He held that position 24 years until his death in 1874. He is buried close to his old friend Fillmore (who died six days after Hall's death) at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, New York.
