The Samanid mausoleum is located in the historical urban nucleus of the city of Bukhara, in a park laid out on the site of an ancient cemetery. This mausoleum, one of the most esteemed sights of Central Asian architecture, was built in the 9th (10th) century (between 892 and 943) as the resting-place of Ismail Samani - a powerful and influential amir of the Samanid dynasty, one of the Persian dynasties that ruled in Central Asia, who held the city in the 9th and 10th centuries. Although in the first instance the Samanids were Governors of Khorasan and Transoxiana under the suzerainty of the Abbasid Caliphate, the dynasty soon established virtual independence from Baghdad.
For many years the lower part of the mausoleum remained under a two-meter high layer of sediment. Now the foundations have been cleared of these obstacles and the mausoleum, fully restored, is open for observation from all sides as was initially planned by the builders.
The fact that the religious law of Islam strictly prohibits the construction of mausoleums over burial places stresses the significance of the Samanid mausoleum, which is the most ancient monument of Islamic architecture in Central Asia and the sole monument that survived from the epoch of the Samanid Dynasty. Therefore, the Samanid mausoleum might be one of the earliest departures from that religious restriction in the history of Islamic architecture.
Abu Ibrahim Ismail ibn Ahmad (Persian: ابو ابراهیم اسماعیل بن احمد سامانی, d. November 907), better known as Isma'il ibn Ahmad, was the Samanid amir of Transoxiana (892–907) and Khorasan (900–907). His reign saw the emergence of the Samanids as a powerful force. He was the son of Ahmad ibn Asad and a descendant of Saman Khuda, the founder of the Samanid dynasty who renounced Zoroastrianism and embraced Islam.
During his brother Nasr's reign, Isma'il was sent to take control of Bukhara, which had been devastated by looting on the part of forces from Khwarazm. The citizens of the city welcomed Isma'il, seeing him as someone who could bring stability.
Soon afterwards, a disagreement over where tax money should be distributed caused a falling out between Nasr and Isma'il. A struggle ensued, in which Isma'il proved victorious. Although he took effective control of the state, he did not formally overthrow his brother, instead remaining in Bukhara. He did so because Nasr had been the one whom the Caliph had given the formal investiture of Transoxiana to; in the caliph's eyes, Nasr was the only legitimimate ruler of the region. Furthermore, the Saffarids of Sistan had claims on Transoxiana; the overthrow of Nasr would have given the Saffarids a pretext for invading. Isma'il therefore continued to formally recognize Nasr as ruler until the latter's death in August 892, at which point he officially took power.

Mausoleum of Ismail Samani At the end of Bagh e Istrahat (Comfort Garden) in Bukhari, there is a beautiful old fashioned tomb of Ismail Samani (849-907 AD), a great king of Samani Empire (819-999 AD) of Central Asia which ruled present day Khorasan (Iran) Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan, China and Russia. It was one of the greatest empires of the time. This mausoleum was built in the IX century at the command of Ismail Samani on the grave of his father, Ahmad bin Asad bin Saman Khuda. He was the founder of the first centralized state in Central Asia. He ruled Transoxiana from 882 to 907. The Mausoleum is now mainly known as burial place of Ismail Samani although it contains the remains of his father and few other descendants. Chashma Ayub in Bukhara ...
The other building Genghis Khan left untouched is the Ismail Samani mausoleum. The Ismail Samani Mausoleum was built in the 10th century to house its the tombs of Ismail Samani, founder of the Samanid Dynasty, as well as his father and grandson. This mausoleum, one of the most important examples of Central Asian architecture, For many years, the lower part of the mausoleum remained under a thick layer of sediment. The external composition of the mausoleum seems rather simple, a hemisphere atop a cube. However, the intricate brickwork of the walls gives the building a delicate lightness. In reality, the walls are so thick and well-built that the mausoleum has never needed significant repair in the 1100 years it has stood here. http://www.shadpurshareef.com http://www.salyalshareef.com...

On the edge of the Samani Park in Bukhara is one of the city's oldest buildings. The Ismail Samani Mausoleum dates from approximately 905: intricate terracotta brickwork with walls two meters thick. I shot this video in the early evening when the heat of the day had passed. A couple of stray puppies were play-fighting near us and the air thick with birdsong and the yells of excited children. I was captivated by the reflection of the mausoleum and the way the ripples distorted its edges into a fluid visual echo. The building has existed for over a thousand years both in its solid physical form and the in its shimmering reflection in one of the city's ancient manmade pools.
