Plant ID: Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla)
Plant ID: Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla)
Genus: Ficus Species: macrophylla Family: MORACEAE Common name: Moreton Bay Fig Plant type: Evergreen Origin: Eastern Australia Habit/Form: A massive tree in stature, even when of relatively small size or continually pruned. This tree doesn't just grow; it becomes a fixture with a distinguished or steadfast attitude. Claims record heights reaching 60m with a huge canopy to match. In city environments, with enough moisture and good soil it can easily average 30m x 30m). The width of the crown can be double the size of its height. Has massive buttressed trunk, striking aerial roots hanging and/or anchoring into soil and often combining/or appearing as part of the trunk (which makes it look even more huge). Trunk texture is smooth grey to somewhat rough texture but not fibrous. Trunk is similar to the limbs of an elephant, lol. They don't enjoy freezing or droughts (and who really does?) but once established they are enduring and long lived. In its natural rainforest environment this tree is found germinating and starting growth on another tree, then sending its roots over its host tree and down toward soil. It uses its host for support and often strangles and kills its host, usually having enough support to stand on its own. So you may find Moreton Bay categorized with strangler figs, and can also be generalized as a banyan tree. Each fig species has a mutualism with a single species of wasp (fig wasps) unique to each fig species. Leaves: Alternate, ovate/elliptic with an acute leaf apex/short drip tip, leathery, maturely about 25cm length x 10cm width, discolourous: shiny dark green top and pale green to rusty brown tomentose underneath. Flower/Fruit: Oval/rounded fig (about 2.5cm in diameter) starting green and ripening to reddish-purple, also developing yellow or red spots. The fig is connected to a stem (about 2cm-3cm long). ---------------- In passing it can be difficult to distinguish some of the different Ficus trees because: lower branches have been lopped, which means many of the aerial roots may have been disturbed, altered or removed from growth; many Ficus have large or massive buttressed trunks and canopies, and the colour and texture of the trunks are similar; from a distance the leaves and fruit can appear similar, and it really helps to inspect the leaves and fruit up-close to determine the differences. Of course once you get to inspect the tree up-close there are some definitive differences you can rely on: leaf size including tip and apex, leaf colour on the underneath side, and amount of hair on leaf (if there is any it is usually tomentose for Ficus); some develop aerial roots on the lower branches; and flower/fruit differences (the fig), shape and size, the colour from unripened to ripe as well as inside colour of the fig, and any distinguishing markings such as spots or warty growths, fruit stems. These are not the only distinguishing features, but they are some of the most common to look for. Its common name is based on Moreton Bay Queensland bay area, Australia.- published: 11 Jan 2014

Barbados Bearded Fig Tree Story
Barbados Bearded Fig Tree Story
The national tree of the tropical Caribbean island of Barbados, is in the Moraceae - Breadfruit family. The scientific name is ficus citrifolia. The Bearded Fig Tree, it's common name, does not produce any edible fruit, but it's aerial roots are an outstanding feature. Once these stringy roots become established in the soil, over time they grow to the size of "mini-trunks", which then allow the tree further stability to spread far and wide. This video, tells of how the tree's common name was derived, as a result of a Portuguese visit in the 1500s. Trail guide, Hiking Victor, is sharing the national tree story, on the 3 hour Eco Adventures, Bathsheba Trail.- published: 21 Jan 2014
