The Assassinations of Indira & Rajiv Gandhi (Documentary)
Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 1917 -- 31 October 1984) was the third Prime Minister of India and a central figure of the Indian National Congress party. Gandhi, who served from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, is the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India and the only woman to hold the office. Indira Gandhi was the only child of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She served as the Chief of Staff of her father's highly centralized administration between 1947 and 1964 and came to wield considerable unofficial influence in government. Elected Congress President in 1959, she was offered the premiership in succession to her father. Gandhi refused and instead chose to become a cabinet minister in the government. She finally consented to become Prime Minister in succession to Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966. As Prime Minister, Gandhi became known for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralisation of power. She presided over a period where India emerged with greater power than before to become the regional hegemon of South Asia with considerable political, economic, and military developments. Gandhi also presided over a state of emergency from 1975 to 1977 during which she ruled by decree and made lasting changes to the constitution of India. She was assassinated in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star. In 2001, Gandhi was voted the greatest Indian Prime Minister in a poll organised by India Today. She was also named "Woman of the Millennium" in a poll organised by the BBC in 1999. Indira Gandhi delivered her last speech at the then Parade Ground in front of the Secretariat of Orissa. After her death, the Parade Ground was converted to the Indira Gandhi Park which was inaugurated by her son, Rajiv Gandhi. Shakti Sthala, the place where Indira Gandhi was cremated at New Delhi On 31 October 1984, two of Gandhi's bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, shot her with their service weapons in the garden of the Prime Minister's residence at 1 Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. The shooting occurred as she was walking past a wicket gate guarded by Satwant and Beant. She was to have been interviewed by the British actor Peter Ustinov, who was filming a documentary for Irish television. Beant Singh shot her three times using his side-arm, and Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds. Beant Singh and Satwant Singh dropped their weapons and surrendered. Afterwards they were taken away by other guards into a closed room where Beant Singh was shot dead. Kehar Singh was later arrested for conspiracy in the attack. Both Satwant and Kehar were sentenced to death and hanged in Delhi's Tihar jail.- published: 13 Nov 2013

The Newshour Debate: Rajiv Gandhi assassination case - Part 1 of 3
21 years after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, a book written by a former CBI officer has sparked a controversy over the former Prime Minister's death. K Ragothaman, who was the head of the CBI Special Investigating Team (SIT) of the assassination case, has dragged the then Chief of Intelligence Bureau MK Narayanan to the centre of the controversy. Narayanan, who is currently the governor of West Bengal, has been accused of suppressing a video which allegedly had captured "human bomb" Dhanu at the Sriperumbudur venue where Rajiv Gandhi was killed on May 21, 1991. Meanwhile, former SIT Chief D Karthikeyan has spoken to TIMES NOW and said that he does not recollect any such video that Ragothaman has spoken about. In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- D R Karthikeyan, Former CBI Director & then chief of Special Investigation Team (SIT) and K Ragothaman, then chief investigator, CBI & Author -- discuss if the chief investigator knew about a missing tape, should he have revealed it earlier? And even if the revelation has come late, should the investigation now be reopened?- published: 13 Nov 2013

A tribute to Rajiv Gandhi
http://pressbrief.in/ Rajiv Gandhi used to say that he has a vision to see India at the pinnacle of her glory and march forward as a country knitted in the fabric of democracy. He was always concerned about the delivery system and he used to say that funds earmarked for rural development hardly reach at the grass roots. He aimed at rectifying this flow and Panchayati Raj in an effective manner was his brainchild. In the field of agriculture, new advances have been made with modern set of equipments and a supportive technology for optimum utilization of resources for maximum output. If India today is at the threshold of being a great economic power, a resurgent middle-class with a great purchasing power, we have to acknowledge the lead role that Rajiv Gandhi had played. Assassination attempt on rajiv gandh-i (Live footage) - Singh Soorma Bhai Karamjit Singh
2nd October 1986 marks the day when Bhai Karamjit Singh Ji very nearly assassinated rajiv gandh-i; the son of indira gandh-i who had orchestrated the delhi 1984 massacre. Below is an extract from an interview with Bhai Karamjit Singh Ji: "I knew that killing the Prime Minister of the country wasn`t an easy task, considering the security around him. So, finally, it occurred to me that this plan might be executed on Gandhi Jayanti at the Rajghat- the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. Now, the main problem was to get high-quality arms and ammunitions. Initially, I tried to get a superior-quality revolver from Punjab, but failed. I settled for a country-made revolver from Shriganganagar (Rajasthan) that cost me Rs 300. I was doing it with the utmost care and confidentiality, but the information was leaked by Punjabi arms suppliers to the police and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The Prime Minister (Rajiv Gandhi) came to know that someone from Punjab might try to shoot at him on Gandhi Jayanti at Rajghat in New Delhi. So commandos were deployed at the Rajghat days before the program. I knew that the security would be tight. So, I made it a point to take my position inside Rajghat about 10 days in advance. I entered Rajghat on September 22 with 35 things necessary for the operation. I sat on an elevated platform at a height of about 10 feet from the ground behind the bushes. Adjacent to the platform, there was a honeybee hive. On the first night itself, there was a lot of rain and that continued for five days. Unfortunately, I had no raincoat, but on the positive side, the rain did not allow the honeybees to swarm out and attack me. The commandos were put in place, much in advance, but as soon as there was a change of guard, I could steal a few minutes for doing my daily chores. Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi entered Rajghat at around 7 am on October 2. As soon as I saw him, I took aim and shot at him. The bullet just missed him. Rajiv folded his hands in the air, as if he was thanking God and was whisked aside for the Bhajan programme. When the programme was in full swing, the security personnel came looking for me. They tried to figure out the direction from which the bullet had come. Some of the officers thought that it might be some kind of firecracker. I was listening to their conversations as about eight Indian Police Service officers were standing right below me. They were all discussing and contemplating in a very serious manner. In the meantime, a sniffer dog traced the bullet. When the Bhajans were over, Rajiv Gandhi came out. He took the bullet in his hand and examined it. It was yet another opportunity for me to take aim and fire one more shot at him. There was utter chaos this time and everybody started running helter-skelter. While Rajiv was running, I fired a third shot aiming at his head. This too missed the target. However, the bullet shrapnel hurt the six commandos who had formed a human wall to protect the leader. All these bullets were fired from a distance of just 25-30 feet. Within two minutes, I was in the clutches of the commandos and the police. While they started thrashing me, some leaders like HKL Bhagat, Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler asked the cops to shoot me at once."- published: 13 Nov 2013
