Beijing unveils plan to tackle air pollution 중국,'대기오염과 전쟁' 선포
Click "CC" for Scripts Subscribe to Arirang News! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews It's often said that just breathing in many Chinese cities for an extended period of time is akin to smoking a pack of cigarettes or even worse. In an attempt to tackle the severe public health issue, the Chinese government has unveiled plans to limit emissions from factories and vehicles. Kim Ji-yeon reports. The skyline in the heart of Beijing is obscured by heavy smog and factory chimneys are blanketed by a thick haze. Chinese cities notoriously suffer from some of the worst air pollution in the world. Pollution levels in Beijing are rated "very unhealthy" by local officials. Concentration levels of the fine particulate matter, known as 'PM 2-point-5', can reach as high as 1-thousand micrograms per cubic meter, which is around 40 times the exposure limit recommended by the World Health Organization. PM 2-point-5 is considered more dangerous than bigger particles as it can penetrate deeper into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. People in Beijing are constantly exposed to these particles that are linked to diseases of the heart and lung. "Air pollution is a critical issue here. There needs to be a solution." To tackle the issue, the Chinese government unveiled a five-year plan this week in an attempt to curb air pollution. Under the plan, Beijing must bring its average concentration of PM 2-point-5 down to 60 micrograms per cubic meter or less, which is a reduction of around 25-percent from pollution levels of 2012. A Chinese official says the country aims to reduce its reliance on coal, the root cause of pollution according to the plan, by more than half of the current level of 23-million tons. The plan also addresses vehicle emissions by restricting the number of vehicles allowed on the road and providing more than 200-thousand electric vehicles to certain areas. "We plan to implement odd-even traffic restrictions on cars on the road." But with the cold winter just a couple of months away, coal consumption is expected to spike as people heat up their homes. Considering the seriousness of the situation, it remains to be seen whether Beijing's latest measures will be enough to mark the beginning of a cleaner, fresher era for China's capital. ISS Startrails - TRONized
ALERT: new spectacular Video: "ISS Image Frontier - making the invisible visible" - with Dr. Don Pettit / NASA Astronaut! https://vimeo.com/61083440 !
--- Do you remember 1982's "TRON" movie? The plot: A computer programmer (epic: Jeff Bridges) is digitized inside the software world of a mainframe computer, where he interacts with various programs in his attempt to get back out. I loved the light cycle races and strange solar wind ships...
Back in the real word the ISS is in a way one of these solar ships, constantly rotating around us. A tiny white spot, as it can be seen racing over the sky from time to time, when illuminated by the sunset (and sunrise ;).
This Video was achived by "stacking" image sequences provided by NASA from the Crew at International Space Station (see also http://www.fragileoasis.org/blog/2012/3/on-the-trails-of-stars/). These "stacks" create the Star Trails, but furthermore make interesting patterns visible. For example lightning corridors within clouds, but they also show occasional satellite tracks (or Iridium Flashes) as well as meteors - patterns that interrupt the main Star Trails, and thus are immediately visible.
The many oversaturated hot pixels in some of the scenes are the inevitable result of ultrahigh ISO settings the Nikon D3s in ISS-use are pushed to for keeping exposure times short by all means (owed to the dramatic speed the ISS travels). As there are no dark frames or RAW data currently available, hot pixels are not easy to remove.
After the initial stacking, all images have been sequenced with Apple Motion and the Video cut and edited with Final Cut Pro X. Stacking done with StarStaX, get it here: markus-enzweiler.de/software/software.html
This Video would also not have been possible without that great minimal soundtrack "Eileen" by Lee Rosevere (http://members.shaw.ca/happypuppyrecords/index.html) that totally nailed the mood, as well as a short clip of "Window #3" by Two Bicycles (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Two_Bicycles/Beko_Crash_Symbols_1/07_Window_3). VIMEO MUSIC STORE ROCKS!

Thanks a lot to my favourite bad Astronomer, Phil Plait at BadAstronomy for first posting the film (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/10/16/my-god-its-full-of-star-trails/) and many many thanks to Vimeo for the Staff Pick!
A truckload of thanks go out to NASA astronaut Don Pettit (http://www.petapixel.com/2012/06/25/astronaut-don-pettit-floating-with-his-huge-camera-collection-on-the-iss/) and his colleagues for taking these images, and making films like this one reality!
Finally, please also be aware of the growing issue of light pollution (http://www.plightwithlight.org/index.php?id=49&L;=1) one can see in many of these scenes! Support IDA (http://www.darksky.org) on their challenge to preserve the night sky for us and our children, on reducing energy waste! And don't forget, it is your tax money that lights up the sky!
Oh, and visit my friends at the UNESCO Project TWAN (http://twanight.org) for some of the coolest nightsky images and videos on our planet! One people, one sky!
Always believe in your dreams and make it possible!
All the best,

Cerro Paranal is an astronomers paradise with its stunningly dark, steady and transparent sky. Located in the barren Atacama Desert of Chile it is home to some of the world's leading telescopes.
Operated by the European Southern Observatory (www.eso.org) the Very Large Telescope (VLT) is located on the Paranal mountain, composed of four 8 m telescopes which can combine their light to make a giant telescope by interferometry.
Four smaller auxiliary telescopes, each 1.8 m in aperture, are important elements of the VLT interferometer.
Walking on the desert near Paranal between the scattered stones and boulders on the pale red dust, feels like being on Mars but under the Earth sky.
Paranal was selected for cutting edge astronomical observations also because of the sky transparency and steady atmospheric condition which let astronomers peer into tiny details in the deep cosmos using giant telescopes.
This film is made with footage from the November 2011 TWAN imaging expedition to Paranal assigned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). We photographed 14 nights in a row from usually 05:30 pm to 08:00 a.m.
All video rights reserved by Christoph Malin (www.christophmalin.com) and Babak Tafreshi (btafreshi@twanight.org) of The World at Night (TWAN) program (www.twanight.org/tafreshi).
The inside vista-observatory video is contributed by Stephane Guisard (www.astrosurf.com/sguisard).
The music is by Carbon Based Lifeforms (carbonbasedlifeforms.net). Song Arecibo extract from the album [Twentythree], write & produced by Johannes Hedberg and Daniel Segerstad, published by Ultimae (ultimae.com).
Equipment used by Christoph on assignment:
- 2 Nikon D3s
- 1 Nikon D700
- 1 Nikon D7000
- 2 AFS 12-24/2.8, 1 AFS 24-70/2.8, 1 AF 16/2.8 Fisheye, 1 AF DX 10/2.8 Fisheye
- Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly with MX2
- Astrotrac AT320 X-AG and Merlin with MX2
Transitions done with Apple Aperture (see http://vimeo.com/35998334). Edited and rendered with Final Cut Pro 10, Motion and Compressor. Some re-edits recently done with LR4 and LRT for testing, fun!. About 35000 TimeLapse images processed, 7500 used for this part of "Astronomers Paradise".
I hope we could at least capture the magic of this very special place a bit - this is how the night sky looks like, if people care about light pollution. And we need more people to do that.
With best regards,
Christoph Malin

The Earth as You've Never Seen it Before: Atmosphere, Airglow and Aurora
A truly powerful image generates questions.
The incredible night photos and time-lapse movies NASA has been sharing with us provoke questions about our planet. That thin-yellow atmospheric line separating earth from space, for example, that we see in all of the night shots provokes two questions: (1) how thick is this line? and (2) why is this line colored the way it is?
The visible yellow and green/blue capped line represents atmosphere reaching ~100km above the surface of the earth. The colors are not reflected light, and not pollution, but rather are light generated from the components in the atmosphere itself. Yes, the atmosphere gives off its own light, in a chemiluminescent process called "airglow" or "night glow."
I have written a blog to accompany this video that explains the various colors of "Night Glow" and discusses the Aurora as well. I hope you find this blog a useful companion to understanding what you are seeing.

In particular, NASA astronaut Don Pettit has filmed and provided the majority of the available time-lapses. He is one of the explorers that truly understands how important it is for explorers to share the wonder of their experiences through both art and science. May all future explorers follow his lead.
These images were imported into Adobe Lightroom, cropped, rotated, and slightly tweaked. I had two main goals with the edits done in the manner I did them. My first goal was to bring the viewer's attention to the atmospheric line by focusing the cropping to prominently feature the atmospheric line and the "Airglow." Secondly, most of the images we see of earth show the planet at the bottom of the frame and space at the top of the frame. To remind the viewer that, in space, the orientation by which you chose to view planets is up to the viewer, I took artistic license with these images to present different ways to view our planet's movement in space.

This film is dedicated to explorers who take pictures that make us ask questions.

17 August 2013 - Human Disease And Electromagnetic Pollution
http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=Boomdaddy01 John B. Wells was joined by Dr. Samuel Milham, who discussed the frightening link between human disease and electromagnetic pollution from cell phones and towers, Wi-Fi systems, Internet over power lines and other personal electronic equipment. Milham said the connection became apparent after reviewing numerous death records of people who worked with electricity. They tended to die of certain cancers, he added. The real culprit seems to be 'dirty electricity,' Milham explained, noting how it has been adversely affecting people since the days of Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) generators. Anything that runs on DC power or interrupts electrical current, like variable frequency drives, makes dirty electricity, he continued. Milham pointed out that green energy sources, such as wind farms and solar stations, also contaminate the grid with DC power. Dairy farmers actually found that low milk production was related to variable frequency drives on milk pumps making their cows sick, he revealed. Milham shared a story about a school with a DC-powered cell tower on campus where children had ADHD-like symptoms and teachers were diagnosed with cancers related to dirty electricity. Interestingly, after the dirty electricity was removed from the school, a dairy farmer on the same grid reported how his milk production increased by ten pounds a day, he said. Milham described how electromagnetic pollution causes a generalized stress reaction in humans, forcing the body to mount an immunologic and endocrinologic response. Since the stress never goes away the immune system becomes fatigued and unable to prevent diseases, like cancer, from taking over, he explained. According to Milham, a certain kind of childhood leukemia did not exist prior to residential electrification. Census data from the 1930s shows that urban cancer rates were 53% higher than in rural areas where there was little or no electricity, he noted. Milham warned against smart meters and the appliances that blast out microwaves to talk to them. He imagined the ideal town would have no Wi-Fi or handheld devices and be powered by sources that produce clean 60-cycle electricity that does not use the earth as a return.- published: 25 Sep 2013
