Thomas Vanek: TV star and shooting star!
The Sabres had won three straight heading into this Friday night game against Toronto. Just 3 goals in this contest as Toronto prevailed 2-1. Third star of the game for Toronto was Buffalo native Lee Stempniak. The teams met again New Year's Day with Buffalo winning 4-1. It was even better February 4 (Stempniak's 26th birthday) in Buffalo when Thomas Vanek scored a natural hat trick. It was also Vanek's fourth consecutive natural hat trick, matching an NHL record set by Cy Denneny between 1923 and 1924 with the old Ottawa Senators.
