That person is Rashid Al Malik, and he's teamed with an organization, Colony Capital LLC to form the Bay Investment Group. The Bay Investment Group's website tells little other than that they're located in The San Francisco Bay Area, but reads: "Bay Investment Group has experienced tremendous growth and at the urging of many investors, we are now negotiating possible investment strategy partnerships." While none of those investment strategy partnerships are listed, one of them is the Coliseum City Project. For those of you not into what's happening, Coliseum City Project is a planned development that will, hopefully, house stadiums for the Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, and Golden State Warriors. Ho Chi Minh City is now the capital, in the south, with some rests of the colonial period.
This was a good surprise because the people were smiling and there are lot of unusual traditionnal areas.

A Noel, nous étions à Ho Chi Minh (ancienne Saigon). Je crois que c'est la ville où nous avons été le pus impressonné par le nombre de deux-roues!
Ho chi Minh est la capitale, au sud du pays, avec quelques restes de l'époque coloniale. Aérée, ville verte, HCM a été
une bonne surprise où nous avons croisé des gens souriants et des quartiers traditionnels insolites.
C'ets le premier clip d'HCM, tout doux. Il y en aura un second davantage "behind the scene" d'ici peu...

Marginal Trades (India, color)
Trades and professional practices have always been intertwined with the Caste System in India. Each caste and its sub-sets would stereotype an individual and dictate their occupational practice. Since the early 1800’s, people were not allowed to deviate from their fixed professions or they would be outlawed by society, which at the time, social morals reflected ignorance and strong attachment to orthodox beliefs. The tradition of professions and trades being passed down the line from father to son, continued for generations until the very moment when globalization and rapid socio-economic change resulted in the problem of enculturation and automation. At that point, many of the age-old practices faded out, while others are currently on their way to extinction. The modern Indian generation refuses to carry on with their ancestral professions and trades; they have become more daring and switch to the more lucrative business possibilities. The abandonment of traditional practices also result from insufficient incomes, a desire to escape the caste stereotypes, the constant neglect of the privileged classes of the society they serve, and a government that was not open to social reforms.
The Marginal Tradesmen were photographed in Kolkata (previously Calcutta), India, between 2011-2013, which was the capital of British Colonial India and also the commercial hub of the Indian sub-continent.
Global trends are constantly changing, therefore, in these increasingly frantic modern times; it is very easy to forget our past, culture and traditions. I am not opposed to modernization, but at the same time, I would want to slow things down and force one’s self to recognize and remember the beauty of these analog practices, within the realm of our digital age. As a photographer, I want to use my craft to pay respect to these tradesmen and bring them to light.

Healing Pool, 2008
Healing Pool uses custom algorithms to create a glowing pool of organic patterns on the floor. Left alone, the patterns slowly pulsate and shift over the course of each day. When a person walks across the piece the patterns tear apart and rebuild themselves, but never exactly as before. The change is similar to a scar left behind when a wound heals. Thus the pool holds a history, or memory, of all the interactions that have occurred since the piece was first turned on.
Like the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, this project serves as a type of memorial, a constantly evolving record of change that honors the minuscule ways in which the slightest interactions—no matter how small or unintentional—have some impact. It is also an examination of how each person is, like the pool, a manifestation of everything that came before.
This project was generously supported by both the Creative Capital Foundation and the MacDowell Colony.
